2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemoratives (19C[A-H], B49296, B49297, B15054, 19XA1, 19XA2)

With two weeks to go, I'll start the Mint sales thread. I still think they'll post prices by Friday, but I still haven't gotten any notification from the Federal Register about pricing. So I'll post this now, so maybe we'll get prices by this afternoon.
(Edit: Prices posted late Friday night, Jan 12 via the Mint web site, not the FedReg.)

All the pages for the commemorates have been populated. Even though there will be no multi-denomination sets, there are still 9 different products being offered. (8 from the Mint, 1 from the BEP.)

This will, of course, be another domed coin, this will easily be one of the most popular commemorates in the five years since the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative, and the lawmakers in Washington decided to shoot for the Moon. So to speak... Link to the law:

The Intro price is in effect for the first 30 days of sale.

*The 100,000 proof clads in the Kennedy set are part of the 750,000 clad mintage.
**Gold prices will fluctuate depending on the average London gold spot close from Thursday to Wednesday.
The HHL (Household Limits) will be lifted after 24 hours. (HHL's lifted 1/25 at Noon...)
You can currently subscribe to the BEP prints here. I don't know how long the enrollment will last. (Subscriptions are closed.)

Based on the 2018 PM SCHEDULE (which apparently didn't get changed for 2019), the introductory gold prices will be:

All 7 commemoratives will have the same obverse and reverse, except for denomination. I am grouping these by metal type.

Gold

Mintage 50K total, across both gold products. They're still using 90%. There will be an initial HHL of 1 per coin.

19CA - Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Proof $5 Gold Coin
Initial price will depend on average London spot the week before these go on sale.
Initial price will be $418.75.

19CB - Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Uncirculated $5 Gold Coin
Initial price will depend on average London spot the week before these go on sale.
Initial price will be $408.75.

Silver

Brand new for this commem is a .999 1.5"/0.86ozt silver coin. This is the first year the Mint has produced a .999 commemorative. There will be a 400K mintage across both standard silver commems, with initial HHL of 100 per coin.

19CC - Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Proof Silver Dollar
This coin will be initially priced at $54.95.

19CD - Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Uncirculated Silver Dollar
This coin will be initially priced at $51.95.

New for this issue is a domed 5oz silver puck (first non-ATB and first proof in 5oz), with a mintage of 100K. There will be an initial HHL of 5.

I suspect the 5oz puck will be one of the two big winners of this batch. More detailed information on manufacture can be found here. At an HHL of 5, this coin is sure to sell out day one, possible hour one? (Bzzzzt. Incorrect, but thank's for playing...)
With that hefty surcharge, expect a price of around $225 or more. (Edit: Priced at $224.95.)

19CH - Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Five-Ounce Proof Silver Dollar

Clad

Clads will be a standard cupro-nickel sandwich. There will also be a special half-dollar set. Mintage is 750K across all three products. There is no HHL for the two standard clads.

19CE - Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Proof Clad Half Dollar
These will be initially priced at $27.95.

19CG - Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Uncirculated Clad Half Dollar
These will be initially priced at $25.95.

The Mint will also be issuing a special half-dollar set, with a proof clad half commem and a clad "Enhanced Reverse Proof" Kennedy half. (All commems for the past few years have been "Enhanced Proof" coins, so it's nice to see the Kennedy get the same finish.) This will be the first clad Kennedy reverse proof, so expect this to be a hot item like the silver puck.

There will be 100,000 sets made available, with a 5 set HHL. This will be another day one, or perhaps hour one sell out.

19CF - Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Half Dollar Set
These will be priced at $53.95.

Paper

Usually lost on the MoneyFactory site, the BEP is offering a three print Apollo 11 commemorative. The first, "Mission" will be available the same day as the coins. The other two prints, “The Eagle Has Landed,” and “Giant Leap,” still have a TBD release date.

There is a product limit of 8,000 with no HHL. It would probably make the BEP's day to sell out.

Price $20, $17 if you subscribed to the print series.

B49296 - Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Engraved Print: Mission

The second print was added to the product schedule April 1st, and was sold out from the subscription.

Finally, recall It took less than a day to sell out the gold commems in 2014, and that was under the really-sucky-bad Pitney Bowes system. (It used to crash a lot, and was slower than the device you're using to look at this post.) There was a HHL of 50. Gold spot was about the same as it is now, so prices should only be slightly higher. The law allows sales via the bulk channel, so they could go fast, especially if the flippers decide to infest the waters,

It took the silver commems about two or three weeks to sell out. Amazing, considering there were 400K available.

Here's something to consider if you're planning on buying.

Just because a product is in your cart, doesn't mean it's reserved for you. You can have it in your cart, but if the product sells out before you finalize the checkout process (and this has happened in the past), your purchase will fail.

Yes, you could visit all 8 or 9 product web pages and add them to your cart, but that will take time. In that time, two of those products could sell out. IOW, you should probably think about a strategy that involves two or three different purchases. I'll leave it at that. This message has been brought to you by the Loyalty Program.

Gosh, can't wait to see the labels for this one. In 2014, I sent mine in ATS, and 8 of the 9 coins (even the clads) came back 70's. Of course, more importantly was the rookie card sent back with every graded coin, which was important for us old sportscard collectors. No free bags this time. Shucks.

I haven't decided if these will get entombed. We're talking 8 different coins this issue. My guess is I'll keep them raw.

I heard that there will probably be a HHL of 1 for the Gold coins, 100 for the 1oz Silver coins, and either 5 or 10 for the 5oz Silver. These all will be lifted after the first 24 hours if they don't sell out.

Also, my understanding is that bulk sales will not start until they lift the household limits.

It will be a test of the ordering process for the Mint. I am anticipating a swarm of people at the starting gate. Their system has improved tremendously from a few years ago. The max mintage of each will ease the frenzy some. The 100,000 for the 5 oz should be sufficient to forestall a sell out in minutes typical of late. I want to see a HHL of no more than 5 at first.

Geeze, look how we are gearing up with more than a week to go.

You might not have a choice for the 5oz Apollo.

That is, I don't think anyone has a slab for a coin that's 11.2mm thick. (That's about 3X the 5oz ATB.) Also, how would they securely mount a curved 76mm-diameter coin?

OTOH, if PCGS makes a custom slab just for the 5oz Apollo, I expect it'll be extra-pricey.

Regardless, I plan to keep mine raw.

Thanks for the info. I’m not a frequent direct buyer of USM products, but I have an enormous soft spot in my heart for the Apollo program. Maybe I’ll break my usual rules and chase a couple of these.

Thank goodness they came to their senses and selected the best of the designs they were given to work with.

So the 5 oz silver $1 is a proof or is that PL? Know if it's hallmarked on the rims?

All ATB 5oz pucks have Washington on the obverse. There have been no other 5oz silver coins struck by the U.S. Mint.

I heard that there will probably be a HHL of 1 for the Gold coins, 100 for the 1oz Silver coins, and either 5 or 10 for the 5oz Silver. These all will be lifted after the first 24 hours if they don't sell out.

Also, my understanding is that bulk sales will not start until they lift the household limits.

HHL's of 5 or 10 on the puck (or half set) is going to fast. That's a possible 10K to 20K buyers. That's a sub-hour sell-out.

I'm expecting stupid-low HHL's like always. We'd have a better idea IF THE MINT WOULD POST THE DETAILS...

(And it would be good to keep the bulk buyers out until after the HHL's are lifted, but I haven't seen any official policy on that. Makes sense though. And that might be the problem... )

Geeze, look how we are gearing up with more than a week to go.

They had their trials with the S-Mint Congrats set, the platinum eagle twins and the palladium proof.

This is the first big multi-coin sale. I don't think we'll see any problems (PFSWeb does have some pretty good tech), but that also means customers will buy faster, and products will sell out faster.

(There still may be a bottleneck in the CC lookup process. We'll see if they solved that one.)

100,000 + HHL of 5 (assuming everyone orders the limit) = 20,000

For comparison, paladium was 15,000 and HHL of 1 and the initial “unavailabe” was about five minutes after opening. Initial, because onesies and twosies did occur for awhile.

I am assuming that when the mint releases the prices they will also provide details for prepaid ordering?

From the Public Law:
(c) PREPAID ORDERS.—
(1) IN GENERAL.—The Secretary shall accept prepaid orders for the coins minted under this Act before the issuance of such coins.
(2) DISCOUNT.—Sale prices with respect to prepaid orders under paragraph (1) shall be at a reasonable discount.

I will just call and try to prepay an order(s) when the prices come out. Nothing to lose except time.

Edit to add: realized the PL does not require notification about prepaid orders but, “...shall accept prepaid orders...”

I believe your assumption is not correct.

But you raise an excellent reminder: If you haven't recently ordered from the U.S. Mint, make sure your "Payment Methods" are up-to-date!

Otherwise, your order might be declined. Or worse, your order might be accepted -- and later canceled... very disappointing after a quick sell-out.

@Hemispherical sent me a PM and pointed out the specs for the silver commemorative:

Composition: 99.9% Silver
Diameter: 1.500 inches
Weight: 26.730 grams

On the other hand, if you looks at any other previous silver commemorative:

Composition: 90 percent silver; 10 percent copper
Diameter: 1.500 inches (± 0.003) 38.10 mm (± 0.08)
Weight: 26.73 grams

The exact same weight? Silver is heavier than copper, so unless they made the blanks thinner, they should be heavier. I would expect some weight difference.

But then, some research turned this up in a coinworld article:

Like the 3-inch coin, the 1.5-inch dollar is composed of .999 fine silver, the first commemorative silver dollar struck in .999 fine silver instead of the usual 90 percent silver, 10 percent copper.

So I may have become convinced that the silver commems will be .999. I hope they keep this standard. (The American Legion silver is also listed as .999.)

Ah, well, still waiting for the Mint to populate the web pages. I'm assuming they'll do a late Friday data dump like they usually do...

Good luck. Here's the typical wording you'll find for US Mint releases. The following was for the ATB set, to be released Jan 15.

Note: To ensure that all members of the public have fair and equal access to United States Mint products, the United States Mint will not accept and will not honor orders placed prior to the official on-sale date of Jan. 15, 2019, at noon EST.

So even if they accept your order, it'll be invalidated. You're in the horse race at noon on Jan 24 like everyone else.

The real question is what "issuance" means. I suspect that language in the law has morphed from being a mail order structure to "pre-paying" for the coins before getting them.

The ATB's were quarters thus Washington on the obverse. These are commemorative dollars thus design unique to the program.

I don't thik lack of George is a sales catalyst but being the first PROOF puck AND being curved (saucer) are definitely catalysts...now if the mintage was "only" 50k it would be MUCH more interesting...

Perhaps they are thinner due to being domed?

Even with all the info the Mint puts out, pre-release, I always have more questions. Waiting and reading. Thanks @BackroadJunkie for keeping me grounded.

United States Mint customers seeking to purchase the two lowest-mintage pieces in the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary commemorative coin program will face household limits of five of the 5-ounce silver dollars and one of the gold $5 half eagles when they go on sale Jan. 24.

According to Michael White of the U.S. Mint Office of Corporate Communication, the household limit for the 1.5-inch silver dollar will be 100 pieces, and no limit will be imposed on purchases of the copper-nickel clad half dollar.

A limit of five sets per household is also in place for the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Half Dollar set. The set will contain two coins — the Proof 2019-S Apollo 11 half dollar and an Enhanced Reverse Proof 2019 Kennedy half dollar. The product will be limited to an edition of 100,000 sets.

All household limits will apply for the first 24 hours of the sales and will be lifted after that point should any coins remain available for purchase. According to White, “These household order limits follow a policy established in 2017.”

The U.S. Mint will also jointly market, with the Royal Australian Mint, a special set containing a U.S. Apollo 11 half dollar and an Australian 1-ounce silver $5 coin celebrating the anniversary. The Royal Australian Mint will sell the set, with the United States Mint website providing a link to Australian website.

As of Jan. 11, the Mint had not yet revealed pricing for any of the coins or sets.

PCGS has the 5oz puck up on the first strike submission date page, so unless they're going to stick a label on the coin, they're going to have a slab...

Yup, looks like it's a done deal. And ATS announced their Apollo slabs too. But no photos yet for 5oz slabs.

Nothing in the Federal Register yet, so we're still missing a couple of pieces, like regular prices. There is also still no Precious Metal pricing table for 2019.

I gotta admit, the half set looks pretty nice. $53.95 for a dollar face. I'm in the wrong business.

I know the Mint is not affected by the shutdown but is the Federal Resister? What if they can't publish the prices in time for the release? Can publishing be skipped?

Nope, FedReg is up an running on govinfo.gov. There was even a notice from Treasure to be posted on Monday, but it has nothing to do with the pricing. (They have to do with importation of archeological stuff from China and Bulgaria. Honest.)

Automatic notification is down, though.

This isn't the first time we've learned prices through PFSWeb before publication in the Register. Just nobody cared about those. Both the Commem prices (probably for both Apollo and American Legion) and the PM schedule will get posted before the release, which is still 12 days away.

We'll see if they have the 'nads to hike PM premiums again...
