Resources: Books-Links to read on numismatic series, errors, and varieties
There could be a sticky or group of threads that cover common themes here at CU.
FOR NEW MEMBERS: In this thread is a plethora of internet links and information on numismatic books, ERRORS, and DIE VARIETIES.
Here will be list of my coin books and hopefully others will make recommendations for all levels of collecting.
Cherrypicker’s Guide to rare varieties of United States coins. Volume 1 & 2
Great for variety hunters and as educational for Registry varieties and subjects like doubling doubled dies strike doubling and so on.
Red Book. A guide of United States coins
As modern an edition as possible to be current but back issue years are good, and sometimes collectable.
**Coin Collecting for Dummies **
There is a cornucopia of books by informative and great coin authors, in no particular order, who are in my personal library, there are many more, I request other members to submit reference for authors and books.
Roger Burdette, Bernard Nagengast, James Wiles, Bill Fivaz, JT Stanton, John Wexler, Lane F Brunner, John Frost, Brian Ribar, Q David Bowers, RS Yeoman, Kenneth Bressett, Ron Pope, Neil Berman, Ron Guth, David Hall, James F Ruddy, Scott Travers, @FredWeinberg , Richard Bosquet

Two of my favorites;
Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837, Russell J. Logan & John W. McCloskey
History of the First United States Mint, Frank H. Stewart
Please --- put Frank Stewart's book on the shelf and read the much better and accurately researched:
Leonard Augsburger and Joel J. Orosz. The Secret History of the First U.S. Mint: How Frank H. Stewart Destroyed, And Then Saved A National Treasure. 2011.
David W. Lange. History of The United States Mint and Its Coinage. 2005.
That is impressive, Roger!

This, above all else, if you plan on collecting and cherrypicking varieties. Once you know the difference between machine doubling and hub doubling, a whole new world awaits you.
I would also suggest avoiding 1960's-era error books by Spadone. He was successful at generating interest in mint errors, but knowledge in the hobby has advanced considerably in the last 50+ years.
With this level of brain trust, we can lighten up and get goofy whenever and still nail the numismatic porterhouse so to speak. Peace Roy

I printed out my numismatic library(which is several years old) and it was 3 pages long. Must update it. Love the books. Probably the most adhered to advice from this forum, "Buy the book".

Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.....Mark Twain
Today's collectors have a much wider range of higher quality books to choose from than just a generation ago. Old standards are, in many instances, completely obsolete for information, just as are old auction catalogs for prices.

numismatic library list. It is VERY extensive. Maybe we can ask
him to share it with us.

For collectors of US coins 1793-1823, coin reference books and US Mint history books give just a brief mention of the chief engraver of those years, Robert Scot, and much of this is speculative and erroneous. My biography of Robert Scot corrects those errors and identifies all of his lifetime engravings (over 800). Scot had many important engravings throughout the American Revolution. Much more engraving history of the First US Mint is given, from archival sources.
edit - @Zoins asked if a Kindle version could be released, I forwarded his request to the publisher, American History Press. If anyone else would like a Kindle edition - please email the publisher. Also, the first printing is nearly sold out, no plans at this time for a second printing.
edit 1-7-2023. American History Press released the second printing in 2022, which is print on demand. Same text with a few typos corrected. The first printing can be identified by glossy covers, and the new printing has a last page added with printing info. Available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, the publisher American History Press, and other internet retailers (prices vary). No hardcover edition yet, but this has been requested with the publisher.

GOOGLE is my friend.
If I had to pick the books I use the most every day it would be the Krause Catalogue of World Coins. Next would be one of the 10 different volumes I use for attributing U.S. Large cents. The Fuld books on trade/Civil War tokes plus the Krause token book would be next most used.
It would be interesting to have a listing of all the books in the PCGS grading room. At one place I worked, the bookcases in the grading room covered an entire wall!

Didn't notice on the list the Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook by Wayne Miller.
You can find old Red books and various books on grading (authored by Martin Brown and John Dunn) which sometimes hold nuggets of wisdom. $5 a pop genrally.
Probably the deepest dive I have made is the Lisot Video archives in the Newman Numismatic Portal. Interviews from the 1980's of dealers who were on the ground floor of the ANA in the 1930's thru 1970's. Also, nearly 30 years of recorded FUN seminar topics. Much, much, more...
If you like to Cherrypick Ebay... if you can find one, there is a 8tf Attribution Wizard software from the 1990's (?) that worked when I loaded it up last week.

Here are some of my favorite reference books for my favorite series. Both of the bust quarter books are great. I have a slight preference for the Tompkins book because I believe it contains more information, but you can’t go wrong with either.
The bust dime book is old, though it is still very informative. There is a “Bust Dime Variety Identification Guide that came out a few years ago. I don’t own it, but from what I’ve gathered it’s more geared toward attributions and rarity ratings.

That cover is a riot, with the authors' names larger than the book title!
must have for Early Dimes folks
Not a book, but I put together a list of my go-to variety-related websites here.
Keeper of the VAM Catalog • Professional Coin Imaging • Prime Number Set • World Coins in Early America • British Trade Dollars • Variety Attribution
This is actually a SHOP but contains so many photos of so many obscure varieties that it qualifies as a RESOURCE. An enormous undertaking to do this!
