About those doubled dies... An obscure tutorial for Roll Searching

Aspie_RoccoAspie_Rocco Posts: 3,259 ✭✭✭✭✭

Food for thought, to better understand Variety Coins.

Who knows when the last widely accepted doubled die coin came out of Denver?

Who knows which Mint frequently makes DDO or DDR coins?

Who has found a DDO or DDR while roll searching? If so, give details.

What is the difference between a True doubled die and other non valuable types of doubling such as; strike doubling, ejection doubling, mechanical or shelf doubling?

Is there a difference between and double struck / double strike coin and a doubled die coin?

A large index of known actual varieties

Best wishes and happy hunting,

I have not yet studied all types, but I recently reviewed the major varieties of Lincoln memorials. I found it interesting that almost all doubled dies come from Philadelphia.

The most recent Denver doubling that I see is the 2009 Lincoln "Formative" years, and prior to that (for Lincolns) is the 1960-D small over large. At least that's what I came up with.

My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

Last year, I found 3 1943-P DDO-006 (Doubled Eye) nickels in a BU roll, including one that made MS65 FS at ANACS.

Back in 1972 I found quite a few 1972 DDO-002, DDO-003, and DDO-008 Lincolns. I still have several of them.

    Excellent observations!
Philadelphia is, in my opinion, home of the doubled dies. So few “modern” DD coins come from Denver, that I was unable to think of a single Denver DD off the top of my head. Duh, I just remembered the 1981 D DDR Jefferson Nickel.

I feel that little piece of knowledge can save a lot of roll searchers a lot of time, look at P mints for a better chance.

In years of searching I have found so many anomalies with P mint coins, and so few with D mint. Actually I cannot recall any varieties ever, from Denver in my searches.
For Jefferson nickels, I think 1964 D/D FS501 was that last major nickel variety from Denver.

The only doubled die I ever found roll searching was 2009 P Lincoln FY, ddr 031. I had a full OBW box of them, and found 1-12 per roll. Still have about a dozen unopened rolls.

I am admittedly jealous! Nice score.

DDO's (and DDR's) are errors that seem to capture the interest of collectors - especially new collectors. I think the famous '55 DDO probably inspires much of this interest. I like the major DD's.... not much for the minor one's, though I would surely keep any I found. Cheers, RickO

I've posted this elsewhere but will post it again. Two important things to look for in a true doubled die.

Also note how the doubling ADDS WIDTH to the devices. Mechanical doubling will not do that.

I have been a variety hunter for decades and have enjoyed finding many through long diligent searches.
Like Ricko, I do not get knocked over by many modern, very minor varieties, or many common doubled eye varieties, but that leaves MANY varieties to look for. Chances are you are not going to find a 55 DDO-1 in the wild only because so many eyes have looked for that variety, but how about the 55 DDO-2 ? It is a major DDO yet not often looked for. It is at least a factor of 10 times rarer yet I found a beautiful AU58 early die state example, yes it is in a PCGS 58 slab.
Or how about the 42S DDO ? Or the 36P DDO ? I only mention these few because I have pics of these on this hard drive
to be able to show, but I have found I would guess over a hundred in the wild over the past 30-40 years.
Now talk about other varieties like RPM's and OMM etc are we are talking thousands found.
    Keep looking.
Edited to add.... Buy a few good reference books to help you learn what to look for.
