Thanks for sharing the reverse photo. Indeed, the crack matches the photo for Die State B on varietyvista. Earlier in this thread, it was noted that 2 of the first 11 specimens were Die State B, so it's the scarcer die state.
Simply amazing...the thousands that have been searched, and he finds one right away. The photo of the reverse makes me think it may end up in a genuine holder, it looks like it may have been cleaned in it's past. That being said it's still a very nice find!
Do you recall when you purchased this particular set off eBay? I ask because there are a few of us who have looked at a lot of auctions for 1919 dimes there and to my knowledge, yours is the first one confirmed as purchased off eBay.

The set was purchased over a year ago. You could never have seen the 1919 in the pictures. The set had a 1916 d pcgs g6, and a 1942/1 raw in a library of coins album. The album was in great shape, the only reason I kept it. To make this find even better the 16d regraded to vg8, which got me back my original investment. The 42/1 came back vf25 and then the 1919 ddo ! I guess I used up my once in a lifetime find.
Big Congratulations on the find! I'll add it to the census as coin #18.
When I first looked at the pics, I was feeling VG10ish on the obv, but reverse caught me as F12. Not sure if it will straight grade, but I'll list it as VG/F Details? Until you get the results back, please update us when you get the results.

Thanks to all of you, especially you strikeout for the original find and all the research and this post, I would have never found it without you. Man I really do love and appreciate all the info I have learned on this board from all of you.
Shipped mine out overnight and paid for walkthru. Couldn't stand fo wait for weeks. So should see results quick.Expecting vg10, hoping for a f12, but rev rim looks weak for a 12, just really dont want it to go genuine.
Thanks, it was good to meet you. Pretty crazy the rarity of these and to have two of these coins get found in Portland and then bump into a guy that found one.
As far as keeping or selling, haven't decided. Have to see how good it looks next to my 16d and my 42/41's. Also have to think about where the value may go.
Number 19 found in junk silver at a b&m. I won this one on an ebay auction.
Kinda embarrassed as to what I paid for it. He had it slabbed and then didn't even mention the ddo or fs101 in the listing or description. Guess that's why its called cherrypicking!
I know it's cleaned/details, but the last 2 "Lower" end ones to sell at auction were: FR-2 at at $606.83 and AG-3 at $817.65. Pretty sure he left a little $ on the table the way it was listed.
Census has been updated, 19 so far - who will find #20?

Folks - check your 1919-P Mercs, just got official word - After hiding in plain sight for 96 years...
Confirmed 1919-P DDO
Still waiting on official FS/CONECA numbering, but will likely be in the next CPG among other places.
I'm sure there will be official photos (especially when the XF/AU specimen is photographed) and announcements in the coming weeks (My coin will be off for a Coin World glamor shot soon).
Talk about an exciting few days, thanks for sharing the ride with me.

2/20/15 - Update
The 2nd specimen finally found its way to Bill, allowing proper verification of the discovery coin, which has now been assigned FS-101. Press releases have been sent by Tom DeLorey to the various news outlets, so look for that shortly. Can't wait for someone to find the first uncirculated example! Happy Hunting

============================
Per request - this was pulled out of the "Box of Oddities" thread found here: Oddities Thread I also posted it ATS here: NGC Boards Thread
I do not know the full story on this coin. The individual I got it from has had it in his box of oddities for 15-20 years at least. He is a small town "Buyer" of old-time collections, he thinks it would have come in in some collection years ago, but he didn't remember it even being in there specifically. Anything that he saw odd, or came in a 2x2 marked as odd, he put in the boxes he was selling me. Beyond that, he doesn't remember any details.
I've weighed it on a .01 digital scale 10 times, recalibrating between each, and it comes back:
2.40 g every time
1.54 dwt every time
37.0 or 37.1 gn (5 of each)
Seems about right weight-wise for a ~Fine Merc
These are all the pics I have online right now, but can add more tonight - bigger, specific areas, whatever anyone thinks will help. I'm not Phil here - I use a point and click, and close-ups through a loupe, so bare with me.
Only other info I can add is a question on hub varieties came up,
There were hub changes in 1916/1917/1918, but don't see anything for 1919 specifically. http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index.php/mercury-dimes-ch-2-design-modifications/
I would really need a merc specialist to look at what's left of the 1919's details to see if they can determine which hub type it is.
And the only other thing
Wow! #13 would be me. If anyone is interested in purchasing it, please PM me here and I will get in contact with you.
What a weird coincidence to see my name and eBay here, haha!

Yea, saw it on eBay awhile back while trying to keep the census as updated as I can. I do weekly checks of the Pop Reports, eBay, google, etc to try to keep it as updated as I can. Didn't realize you were a forum member.
Do you mind sharing the story of the coin. How was it found, did you get it certified, etc.

ARGH!! I would have been all over that!!!
Have you stopped trying to cherrypick one on eBay? After more than a year of fruitless searches, I now only look through eBay auctions when the mood strikes, but if you were still being diligent about monitoring the site, that one should have popped up on your radar.

The coin is actually a consignment for a local dealer in my area, but I'll go ahead and share the story. It's short, but nonetheless it's a 1919 DDO, right? lol.
For the gist of the matter, the dealer was reading that month's edition of Coin World Magazine when the 1919 DDO discovery article was published. One of the two gentlemen in the shop showed the other and they immediately went to look at all of the 1919 Mercury dimes in the shop.
They have tubes of every date and mint coin, so they went to the 1919 mercury dime tube. The second coin pulled out of the tube was that DDO.
This is in the New Orleans area.
It was soon after sent to NGC where it was verified, and quite early, in fact. It was a few weeks after that they had me list it on my eBay page. At the time when it came back, there was only about 5 total from both companies graded.
Nevertheless, there has not been any real buyer interest in the coin besides people just wanting to come and look at it. They still have the coin and are looking to sell!
Well selling it would not be a problem on a National platform such as GC where past examples have sold for decent money. Selling it out of a case in a shop would be much, much more challenging. If they want to sell it, I'd suggest to them to go to GC, HA or another auction format. Another option would be to contact Leo Frese directly as he is one of the big players in this variety.

We've tried large shows in the Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama areas to the same "lots of lookers" theme. I can suggest the greatcollections or HA format. We'll see.

Great Collections would probably be the best bet, as they have handled 3 already and if the coin sells for over $1000.00 there is no seller's fee. So win win..

I'll pass the news along, thanks!
Not quite sure it would hit $1,000. There have been 6 "Public" sales, ie eBay and Great Collections out of the 19 (Possibly a 20th if I can figure out the new NGC VG in the pop reports). Some of these earlier on when the pops were lower.
PCGS XF40 - $9,075
PCGS VF20 - $3,960
Raw VG - $2,250
NGC AG3 - $817.65
PCGS FR2 - $606.83
PCGS Genuine AG Details - $203.53 (Wasn't properly advertised either)
My guess is the NGC AG3 you are holding would go between $750 - $900.
FYI - I verified coin #20 is a new discovery (I have pictures of them all) it's an NGC-VG10. I always update the 1st post of this thread with the census if you ever want to check, but here is all the info I have as of now as well:
Certified Straight Grade or Problem-Free Raw
(8) PCGS XF-45
(4) PCGS XF-40
(1) PCGS VF-20
(20) NGC VG-10
(18) PCGS VG-10
(3) PCGS VG-8
(11) RAW - VG
(5) NGC G-6
(6) NGC G-6
(7) NGC G-4
(15) PCGS G-4
(10) RAW - Good
(16) NGC AG-3
(13) NGC AG-3
(12) PCGS AG-3
(17) PCGS FR-2
Issues/Problem Coins
(2) NCS AU-50 Details - Environmental Problems
(14) PCGS F Details - Genuine - Edge Dmg
(19) PCGS AG Details - Genuine - Cleaning
(9) RAW - AG Details, Damaged

SALES HISTORY:
In addition to several exchanging hands privately, there have been 6 completed “Public” sales (eBay and Great Collections) so far. Prices include GC
buyers premium, and eBay shipping.
Hi all,
I dont know if anyone else has, so I put in a request with Cosetta in registry to add the ddo to the complete variety sets.
Not sure if finding one of these was a blessing or a curse, cause now I've started a registry set. Guess I know where my extra dough is going now!
Well, we're about at the 2-year mark of starting the threads on this discovery. It's been kind of quiet lately, nothing new in months, and still at a known population of 20. Nothing new in the pop reports, major coin forums, or online sales venues.
Still waiting for the CPG likely towards the end of the calendar year and still no word on the Redbook - Whitman was "Monitoring" the situation last I heard.
The 1st post in this thread (as well as a few posts up above this) are still the current overall census, condition census, and sales history.
Here's hoping year #3 brings us our first MS example and a few more new discoveries!
Just listed
Anybody watching the great collections listing? Discovery coin up for grabs! Ends tomorrow night
Yes, that would be #21 - updated the census. NGC's own pop reports haven't been updated yet, must be freshly graded (They have 2 AGs in pop report, the #'s 13 & 16 coin, this isn't them). I compared the pics to my pic library of the others raw in that neighborhood, and it does not match. The last NGC AG3 sold for $817.65 last September through Great Collections, think this seller is a bit optimistic on the $5k - obviously haven't followed this thread ;-)
I'm also surprised the Discovery coin is back for sale - it last sold in August through Great Collections for $3,960. Be curious if it goes lower now that more are out there.
Everytime I see this coin, I get peeved as I had one of these several years ago, It was probably a fine + maybe vf. I kept it and showed it around to several folks, but nobody then seemed to care. Don't know what happened to it, should have pursued it more. Fast forward to the recent discovery. Wish I would have kept it now.

Ditto about 15 years ago! Maybe it was the same coin?????
I have searched for one of these... Antique shops around here... even had my daughter in NC go to a coin shop and buy every 1919 in 2x2's they had.... no luck..... will keep searching.... Cheers, RickO

Don't know if it's been posted yet....but here it is.
Yes, that is coin #13 in the census:
13) NGC - AG-3 - Owner Unknown > (eBay seller: boyernumismatics) Consigned - Dealer inventory find in dated rolls.
Cert: 2687209-003
Was listed awhile back on eBay a few times with a fairly high BIN and didn't sell.

The PCGS EF-40 that was last sold at GreatCollections will be offered in the Stack's Bowers May Collectors Choice Online Sale. New holder and cert.
==============
This should be interesting. That is coin #4 in the census. I'll have to update the cert # once I see it, but in the census it's:
4) PCGS XF-40 (From ANACS EF-40)- small show Portland, OR (Dealer folder unattributed) - (jtlee321/Justin) > Leo Frese > ? > 2/14/16 - Great Collections ($9,075 ($8,250 + $825))
Cert: 545047.40/29996937
And of course is the the highest sale (in a public venue) thus far.
(4) PCGS XF40 - $9,075 (2/2016 GC)
But... when it sold in Feb of 2016, it was the straight-graded "Top Pop" and only had a total population of about a dozen then. Since then, Rick Snow's PCGS XF45 has taken the "Top-Pop" title and there are now 21 in the census. Rick's coin was listed many times on eBay with a BIN of $13,250 and didn't sell.
The PCGS VG8 (coin #3) didn't meet reserve in Aug 2016 at Stacks. Following this variety pretty closely, unless auction madness strikes, I'm not positive the XF40 will go over what it did at Great Collections, but you never know. If the variety made it into the Mega Redbook (Don't think it made it into this year's regular Redbook) it might help, who knows.
It's only a little over 2 years since the variety came to light - I've watched the lower grade pieces slowly slip in prices, but... This is the 2nd highest coin at the moment, and PCGS added it a few months ago to the registry, so again... who knows.
Thanks for the updates, glad to see some action in the thread again!

Discoverer of 1919 Mercury Dime DDO - FS-101
Have you stopped trying to cherrypick one on eBay? After more than a year of fruitless searches, I now only look through eBay auctions when the mood strikes, but if you were still being diligent about monitoring the site, that one should have popped up on your radar.

I still look, but somehow missed that one,
Just doing my weekly pop report check, NGC now has a "VG" listed. Does anyone have any info on this coin?
Only 3 possibilities.
1) Someone crossed one of the two PCGS VG coins (#3 & #18)
2) Someone got the raw #11 coin graded
3) Discovery of coin #20
I was kind of hoping with all the big shows going on this weekend that there would be some more reported, no such luck I see yet.

Discoverer of 1919 Mercury Dime DDO - FS-101
Hi all,
I dont know if anyone else has, so I put in a request with Cosetta in registry to add the ddo to the complete variety sets.
Not sure if finding one of these was a blessing or a curse, cause now I've started a registry set. Guess I know where my extra dough is going now!
Bst transactions with: dimeman, oih82w8, mercurydimeguy, dunerlaw, Lakesammman, 2ltdjorn, MattTheRiley, dpvilla, drddm, CommemKing, Relaxn, Yorkshireman, Cucamongacoin, jtlee321, greencopper, coin22lover, coinfolio, lindedad, spummybum, Leeroybrown, flackthat, BryceM, Surfinxhi, VanHalen, astrorat, robkool, Wingsrule, PennyGuy, al410, Ilikecolor, Southcounty, Namvet69, Commemdude, oreville, Leebone
I'm still looking for one!
The 1919 ddo is now in the complete variety sets.
It only has a weight of 4 ! ??
Dimeman; I am sure you'll find one long before I find the other 102 dimes I need to be 100%
Bst transactions with: dimeman, oih82w8, mercurydimeguy, dunerlaw, Lakesammman, 2ltdjorn, MattTheRiley, dpvilla, drddm, CommemKing, Relaxn, Yorkshireman, Cucamongacoin, jtlee321, greencopper, coin22lover, coinfolio, lindedad, spummybum, Leeroybrown, flackthat, BryceM, Surfinxhi, VanHalen, astrorat, robkool, Wingsrule, PennyGuy, al410, Ilikecolor, Southcounty, Namvet69, Commemdude, oreville, Leebone

You just didn't show it to the right guy--I.e. Me! ;-)
Ditto about 15 years ago! Maybe it was the same coin?????
$2.60 for shipping?
I have searched for one of these... Antique shops around here... even had my daughter in NC go to a coin shop and buy every 1919 in 2x2's they had.... no luck..... will keep searching.... Cheers, RickO
The discovery coin ended tonight on Great Collections for $4,290 ($3,900 hammer and $390 juice). Little bit higher than the last time it sold.
I updated the sales history in the 1st post.
I'm surprised since it was added to the registry that Rick's Top Pop XF-45 is still sitting on eBay. Maybe everyone is holding out for an unc.

Just a quick update.
The PCGS EF-40 that was last sold at GreatCollections will be offered in the Stack's Bowers May Collectors Choice Online Sale. New holder and cert.
The owner of my local shop has one in an NGC slab. Saw it today

What possible reason for the reholder already?

Yes, that is coin #13 in the census:
13) NGC - AG-3 - Owner Unknown > (eBay seller: boyernumismatics) Consigned - Dealer inventory find in dated rolls.
Cert: 2687209-003
Was listed awhile back on eBay a few times with a fairly high BIN and didn't sell.
==============
==============
