2/12/15 - UPDATE:
-----------
Folks - check your 1919-P Mercs, just got official word - After hiding in plain sight for 96 years...

Confirmed 1919-P DDO

Still waiting on official FS/CONECA numbering, but will likely be in the next CPG among other places.

I'm sure there will be official photos (especially when the XF/AU specimen is photographed) and announcements in the coming weeks (My coin will be off for a Coin World glamor shot soon).

Talk about an exciting few days, thanks for sharing the ride with me.

Jeff

2/20/15 - Update
The 2nd specimen finally found its way to Bill, allowing proper verification of the discovery coin, which has now been assigned FS-101. Press releases have been sent by Tom DeLorey to the various news outlets, so look for that shortly. Can't wait for someone to find the first uncirculated example! Happy Hunting

Bill Fivaz gave permission to use his picture of the motto of the 2nd Specimen found (XF)

Per request - this was pulled out of the "Box of Oddities" thread found here: Oddities Thread I also posted it ATS here: NGC Boards Thread

I do not know the full story on this coin. The individual I got it from has had it in his box of oddities for 15-20 years at least. He is a small town "Buyer" of old-time collections, he thinks it would have come in in some collection years ago, but he didn't remember it even being in there specifically. Anything that he saw odd, or came in a 2x2 marked as odd, he put in the boxes he was selling me. Beyond that, he doesn't remember any details.

I've weighed it on a .01 digital scale 10 times, recalibrating between each, and it comes back:
2.40 g every time
1.54 dwt every time
37.0 or 37.1 gn (5 of each)
Seems about right weight-wise for a ~Fine Merc

These are all the pics I have online right now, but can add more tonight - bigger, specific areas, whatever anyone thinks will help. I'm not Phil here - I use a point and click, and close-ups through a loupe, so bare with me.

Only other info I can add is a question on hub varieties came up,
There were hub changes in 1916/1917/1918, but don't see anything for 1919 specifically.
http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index.php/mercury-dimes-ch-2-design-modifications/
I would really need a merc specialist to look at what's left of the 1919's details to see if they can determine which hub type it is.

And the only other thing I see is a possible clash to the right of the "D" in "GOD"?

As I said in the original thread, definitely a doubled die. The first impression was only partially formed and fades out equidistant from the rim, which is why only the top part of the N of IN shows, while more of the R and most of the U of TRUST show. The same phenomenon can be seen on the classic 1916/1916 nickel.

    Great find!

I have seen this type of doubling in the cherrypicker guide last night, I don't recall the date, but this is an obvious one.

He is probably my best friend in the coin realm and I just talked to him on the phone to ask about the pedigree. He gave me the box to buy, the only thing was for me to give him a fair price on them once I went through them all. While this could certainly raise the price, it would have sat in his oddity box for another 20 years without ever noticing, so he said to run with it and congrats.

I'm thinking that the doubling is so obvious the press operator may have noticed it right away and pulled the die from the press. Just a supposition, of course.

Something looks off to me, I don't think I like how the under (GOD) is on a downward slanting plane while the under (Trust) goes upward by the T. Inconsistent rotation seems like a troubling sign to these eyes.

Pasting my reply from the other thread here as well:

Honestly my first thought is that it is a genuine doubled die but a counterfeit coin. The only way I could see that being a real mint product, given the very strong but very localized doubling, would be if there was a design hub change that year. Is that a listed variety I am not aware of? If not, is there any way a doubled die that strong on such a widely collected series could go unnoticed for almost 100 years?

I second this suggestion and I would do it ASAP. If this turns out to be a legit doubled die it would be one of the strangest I've ever seen. Not to get too technical but I suppose it could be some kind of tilted hub Class IV but the very strong and very localized doubling on the motto with no doubling anywhere else at all is what's troublesome. It seems that with a spread this wide there would be some doubling on the designer's initials and the date. As to the 1916/16 5c the first hubbing was weak, which accounts for the "fading" on the date but additional doubling can be seen elsewhere on the coin.

Large cents, bust halves and bust dollars are more intensely studied by variety collectors than Mercury dimes, yet new die varieties have been discovered in recent memory.

Look at the 1798 dollars BB-91 and 92 with 5 line elements in the shield which I discovered even though I am not an expert in that field, which the true experts had overlooked for decades. It was there, it just was not seen.

Good pictures. A nicer coin might possibly show something on the upper left tip of the designer's initials if that is inside the arc of the partial design formed by the initial hubbing, but unfortunately this coin got smooshed there.

I would not expect to see any doubling on LIBERTY based on where the initial hubbing faded out in IN GOD WE TRUST.

I'm not sure this would get me very far, probably would just come back VG10-F15 or maybe VG/F Details damaged (Due to the hit on the reverse on the rim) but... I don't think PCGS would put anything on the slab that wasn't in the CPG.

It was my understanding on any discovery-type of coins, they need to go through CONECA, who will more than likely put it through ANACS if approved/assigned a number/deemed legit.

The Capt has sent the pics on to Mr. Fivaz, so at some point here in the next few days, once speculation dies down, and assuming this isn't proven to be something other than what most are guessing at the moment, I'm assuming I will be sending it off to him or someone from CONECA for further study, and perhaps some professional photos. From there, my guess is they will send it off to ANACS (Or maybe they have some deal with NGC/PCGS for situations like this) I'm not really sure.

I think for the next few days I'm just going to let the experts chime in and take any pics I can to help them, and see where this leads.

I certainly appreciate all the help, advice, PMs, support, etc - it's quite exciting.

So far the highlight of my numismatic career has been my name in RWB's Peace Dollar book for submitting a clipped dollar for his error section, if this pans out, will certainly top that (no offense RWB) 8-)

I don't mean to pick on this poster, but this argument drives me bananas. The number of die varieties for a particular date of US coinage is in no way comparable to the number of animal or plant species in the world, or the number of stars in the sky, or whatever frontier of discovery in the natural world you want to bring up. There were a finite and known number of dimes minted in Philadelphia in 1919, from a finite and known (or closely approximated) number of dies.

Obviously die varieties like this can go unnoticed for decades, you can tell by how long the coin in the OP circulated, and there probably weren't a lot of people studying 1919 dimes (before today, anyway), but it still boggles me that a variety that strong could go that long without being reported.

To quote Tom-"I'm thinking that the doubling is so obvious the press operator may have noticed it right away and pulled the die from the press. Just a supposition, of course."

Time will tell how rare this is, of course, but I think this is a plausible explanation. Something similar must have happened with the 1936 Walker, FS 801, which remains an extremely rare variety and to the the 1916/16 Buffalo.

BTW-the OP and his friend did this thing right-total honesty.

I agree that there are many looking for this thing, too, including me. It ranks right up there with the 42/41 and probably better if it turns out to be of great rarity. What a find!
