I got my APMEX 2010 coins today. I have never bought from them before. When I ordered I noticed they said they would be BU or better. I also saw that they had a place for special requests, and they said they would try to accomidate if they could. I figured what the heck why not ask for the "or better," so I typed in the notes, "If you can, Please get me some really nice ones with PL finishes. " When I looked at my packing slip, it had the note on it, and was stamped in red letters "See Notes".
Turns out they gave me exactly what I asked for, so now I am wishing I would have specifically asked them for MS69 DMPLs.
Here is what I got, a "B" box.
Mt Hood: MS68 DMPL Yellowstone: MS68 PL Grand Canyon: MS68 PL Yosemite: MS68 PL Hot Springs: MS68 DMPL
I cannot complain, they gave me what I asked for.
Seeing these coins makes me more optimistic about the grades for the 4 raw coins I sent in to PCGS. I'm guessing I will be getting two or three MS69 DMPL out of 4. Hopefully, I will find that out soon.
<< <i>Other people have said that they were first time customers and they didn't get A boxes--killing that correlation. IMO, it is pure chance. Pure chance? To have boxes segregated and designated? You are right though, it's about greed - greed from several distributors to manipulate the product in order to benefit themselves, or their best customers, who ultimately line their pockets.

OK, it appears that the A box contains either all BU or BU with some MS68/68PL mixed in. So a max of 68PL. B box includes all 68PL and/or 68DMPL. C box has minimun of 68DMPL with some 69PLs mixed in. D box is 69PL/69DMPL. I wonder if there is a golden box E with all 69DMPL.
Also, the majority of coins graded in the 68/69 range. Therefore there are not a large number of BUs. This may explain why there is not enough A boxes to go around to all the new customers and they are getting B boxes instead.
I would like to know if there is a long time customer here that has a long time standing APMEX account (not a new extra account) that received a A or B box?
<< <i>are you going to open it? I sold mine sealed. Wondering how they're packaged >>
Already opened it, not bad coins. They are just in (giant) mylar flips, stacked on top of each other in a small box within the small shipping box. No padding between the coins, but seemed to make it OK.

Nice job compiling the info. Mine was a B and I had a 68PL (3) and 68DMPL (2). First-time customer.
<< <i>are you going to open it? I sold mine sealed. Wondering how they're packaged >>
I just had my DG set delivered. Small box in a box, in flips, not well protected. I don't see any dmpl's or even any 69's. I will give them an acetone bath and see how they come out tomorrow.
I was also a first time APMEX customer who received the scarlet "A" box and yes it was a box of culls. Sounds like many other first time buyers at APMEX got the same service. I guess they weren't interested in netting repeat customers. It would have been wise for them to have spread the culls out more and ensure all customers received at least one nice coin.
Batman, I have purchased from APMEX for at least 4 years, was popcorn tin-worthy (not a high roller though) and got a B box.
I'm not convinced there is a systematic distribution here.

I got the D box all 69`s have been a customer for 5or 6 years nothing big due to okla taxes. I live in OKC.I was on there notify list when they would come available. I think it was just luck of the draw. I`m just lucky out of 10 sets one was JHCB culls 62`s -66 and 1 ebay cull and even after 2 culls I still came out with 28-69`s 8-68`s 8-67`s and 6-62 thru 66. Thats out of 10 sets 2 cherry picked 3 if you count the ampex 69`s. Still better than 50% 69`s with 2 cull sets . Like I said better to be lucky than good .
Who is buying 2011 bullion and where are you getting them. I had an order with A-MARK as a thank you for being a good AP. I requested PCGS slabs as that is all I have. They E-mailed that all they had were NGC and I could cancel if I wanted, hated to but didn't want NGC. So who is selling and shipping good clean well packed 2011`s. Thanks
Lurker since page 355. Received my APMEX set tonight. Was waiting for it all day. Most UPS deliveries for me are at 330-400. When they didn't show I thought to myself I hope the wait is going to be worth it. And it was, I got a "C" box. First really nice set for me. 3 68DMPL's. 1 69PL, 1 69. YES!!! Now I can atleast make a 68DMPL set. Never purchased anything from APMEX before. Paid by USPS money order by priority mail. maybe that helped. Thanks to this board in sharing info that made it possible for me and others to buy these sets from AP's when I thought it was hopeless.
Newbie question....I know it was mentioned here there will be no PL/DM due to the finish but is there any reason to get the new 2010 P ATB slabbed? Just wondering. Thanks.

I canceled A-Mark and as soon as the Pay-Pal refund showed up I bought at Provident. $100+ less than A-Mark. Comes with Air-Tites not PCGS BU slabs but that's fine. If I want numerical grades I'd have to send them in anyway.
