The guy has had a wonderful career and would like to see him top it off with a 20 win season especially since there is talk that he will retire after this season no matter what. >>

that'd be fine with RSN as long as the Sox are rested and capable for the LAA series!

Tony Massarotti has an interesting article/blog on the Globe's site today about the Red Sox from Eric Wedge's perspective. It's a good read, but one thing that jumped out at me was this encouraging stat:

"Beginning July 23, the day Justin Masterson made his first relief appearance, Sox relievers Masterson, Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima, Javier Lopez and Jonathan Papelbon – the big five of the Boston bullpen – have a combined ERA of 1.91."

Pretty impressive. I don't want to be the one to throw Mike Timlin's numbers in there to see what that does to the ERA, but I think we should feel pretty good about our bullpen going into the postseason. I'm sure we all still have our growing fears about Papelbon's reliance on just the fastball, but if our pen can manage a 1.91 ERA in the postseason I think we'll be in good shape.

Here's a link to the rest of the story if you are interested: Massarotti Column

pretty sweet that two games against the NYY are just like Spring training, nobody cares. Bad news about Lowell. I see him as a pinch hitter at best during the ALDS

You will probably get your wish, as it looks like Mussina will back into an easy win against the Sox bench players.

It is a shame about Lowell, but its nice to see him out there fighting to play - unlike Nancy Drew for the last 6 weeks.

Mussina will get beat like a rented mule today. No way he breaks his own curse today. Either it gets rained out, or he loses.
    Sorry Mike. image

just bought tickets for my wife and I to ALDS game 3 at Fenway October 5. Section 15. We had a trip to NH planned for the week and this was an opportunity I couldn't pass up.

Awesome! I was at last years Game 1 ALDS (Beckett's 4-0 shutout) and it was great to catch a post-season game at Fenway. Nothing quite like it!

Being that the chokers thread is all but vanished, I see the village idiots have chosen to visit a real thread.
Come as you please, and say what you wish. Just remember, the only reason you come here is because deep down
you want to be associated with a winner. Too bad your own thread couldn't give you the satisfaction you were seeking.

the ninth was a surprise, Papelbon coming in and getting hit frequently. Oh wait, did I use the word "surpirse"? I meant to say something about 100% fastballs are doom to the thrower

Breaking news that Beckett has an oblique industry and may miss his start in the playoffs.... I would assume that Byrd gets the start?

frak, just saw it on cnnsi.com...starting game 3 most likely. On the bright side, that means I should get to see him pitch as I will be there for game three.

The Red Sox confirmed that Josh Beckett suffered a strained oblique while throwing Friday and won't start before Game 3 of the ALDS.Jon Lester and Daisuke Matsuzaka will start the first two games versus the Angels. Manager Terry Francona indicated that he was confident that Beckett would be able to go Sunday. There was some thought to using him in Game 2 on Friday.

No big deal about Beckett. It's going to be up to the offense to provide the victories. We know that Lester, Dice-K, and Beckett
will most likely give us 7 innings of 3 run baseball. It's up to the bats to come through.

So who is going to step it up in the playoffs ? Pedroia will hit. Youk will hit. Ellsbury may. Not sure about Papi. Bay will hit.
Varitek is a question mark. Crisp is a question mark. Drew/Lowell/Lowrie are question marks. We need a hungry team to
all cowboy up. We shall see.

image Oh not a chance Jerry. You have to be kidding me image All those fruitless Sox years you spent in Yankee playoff threads sporting other teams icons? HA! Not a chance. I will be here to help you document a Red Sox playoff fizzle against the obviously superior Angels image

image That is one funny comment. How can Beckett having a strained oblique and being pushed to game 3 not a big deal, and that's if Beckett is ready for game 3. Beckett might be just fine and they are playing it very safe, but he is now in the #3 slot which only gives him 1 start in the series which I think is big. Don't forget that Beckett is your ace and he is big gamer pitcher.

Because Lester and Dice-K have both pitched better then Beckett this year

    Dice-K has a 2.90 era & 18-3 record
Lester is at 3.21 era & 16-6 record
    Beckett has a 4.03 era & 12-10 record

I hate the Sox but you have to give them their due. They have earned both their rings!
    Best Regards,

    Rob

We have to win 3 games . . . it really doesn't matter if Beckett wins Game 1 or Game 3, either way it counts towards the total.

Dice-K may have the slightly better stats, but Lester has been the best Sox starter this season. I'm comfortable with him in Game 1. Beckett is the money pitcher in post-season play, so maybe having him later in the series will be helpful.

JD Blew pronounced that he is 100% ready for game one. Let's see if his 100% is a fan's 100%. Empty the diaper, JD, it will help.
  • Options
I hear that. JD's 100% is more like our 60%. He needs to be doing the impossible and giving more than 100%. If he actually produces though, that would be a huge help.

    Thank God!

Also, our lineup for tonight finally looks like right with everyone starting and in the right spots (more or less).

    1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
    2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
    3. David Ortiz, DH
    4. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
    5. J.D. Drew, RF
    6. Jason Bay, LF
    7. Mike Lowell, 3B
    8. Jed Lowrie, SS
    9. Jason Varitek, C
    SP -- Jon Lester

I'm so glad that there hasn't been a need to bring Lugo back in at SS.

    perkdogperkdog Posts: 33,968 ✭✭✭✭✭
I thought about Lugo today and thought the EXACT same thing, between him and Timlin Im not sure who is worse?

I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope JD "The wimp" Drew can just toughen up and actually play a few games- there is no doubt he was a HUGE factor for us last year so lets hope he can contribute again this year...we are taking baby steps with him just being in the lineup at this point though.

I'm hoping the same thing about Drew. The one thing I will say in support of Drew though is that he always seems to play solid defense. At the very least, his presence means that Ellsbury can play CF again and cover lots of land.

It started out good with Ellsbury's double, but no runs. At least they are making contact against Lackey though.

that's the only bad pitch all night, glad Bay could take advantage of it.

    Manny = 1
