I would like to see the Yankees win tonight, with Derek Jeter hitting the final home run in Yankee Stadium. Baseball tradition is way above the NYY-BOS rivalry. It ought to go as scripted, with Rivera getting the save.

I agree with you. It would be shame if Rivera doesn't get a save tonight.

Steve, Thank You for clarifying something that was actually very obvious
Barndog, Oh no you don't. Yankee fans have always lived with crack pot Sox fans declaring that anything below a World Series win would be utter failure for the Yankees and their huge payroll.
Now the joke is on you guys. The Sox can't seem to get a upper hand on a Rays team with a FRACTION of the payroll of the glutenous big spending team from Boston. A one and done will certainly bring great joy and laughter for many.
I can't wait for a Sox ONE and DONE post season to be reality
<< <i>Anything less than a World Series is a failure, Dan.
And I'm not sure why the joke is on us just because the Rays have played us well this year. I must have missed the punchline I guess. >>
This was really aimed at ctsoxfan. The biggest Sox koolaide drinking REGUALR to this board. EVERY year he would drone on and on about how great it would be to see the Yanks bounced in the 1st round. Very recently he even displayed a friggen Detroit Tigers icon for crying out loud as he and the Sox sat out missing the playoffs.
Okay, I stand corrected. I found something even better than watching the Yankees get bounced from the playoffs in the first round (that was getting old, anyway) - watching the Yankees spend $210M on a team that will finish in fourth place out of the playoffs. The baseball gods really have shined on us here in 2008.
<< <i> The Sox can't seem to get a upper hand on a Rays team with a FRACTION of the payroll of the glutenous big spending team from Boston. A one and done will certainly bring great joy and laughter for many.
I found myself frustrated with Lowrie tonight, but as I thought about it, I realized that I'm really more frustrated with JD Drew. I'm frustrated with Drew because Lowrie shouldn't have to be the #6 hitter right now and because Mark Kotsay is something abysmal like 2 for his last 63 or something like that. All the good will that Drew built up earlier this season is getting pissed down the drain.
that play off the Ump was crazy. The Rays are destined to win the division. good for them, they played hard all year and played through injuries. Some small satisfaction watching the Indians creep over .500 and beat the sox tonight. Close game though! Sox certainly had their chances.
that was the worst fielding half inning I have seen the Sox play all year:
Casey butchers a grounder he should have had (no error) Crisp pulls a Manny and loafs after a fly (no error) Youk boots one so no DP chance, throws runner out at first (no error) Crisp does whatever kind of half hearted slide that was and doesn't come close to catching a fly (no error)
Wakefield has to hate pitching with these plays behind him.
Could be a very rainy weekend in Boston...I hope not, I'm looking forward to the Yankee's series. No time for makeup games, whatever gets rained out I think stays rained out. Watch the weather developing just north of Puerto Rico.
Indeed a nice feeling to have a shot at the WS again!! Making it to the playoffs was, an always will be quite an accomplishment. I think the AL East is the toughest division in baseball.
I truly didn't mind (too much) seeing Timlin. I did mind it a bit though, since I think Francoma is thinking of keeping Timlin on the staff for the postseason...BIG mistake

While I always love watching the Red Sox and Yankees play, I wouldn't mind a couple games getting cancelled so long as it isn't one of those deals where the starting pitchers go through their warm ups, pitch 2 innings, sit around for an hour, pitch another inning, sit around and then have the game called. A couple days off would mean fewer innings for those arms so they could be fresh for the trip to LA/Anahiem/Orange County/California.

if Francoma starts someone other than Hansack, Pawley (sp?), that knuckleball guy (the young one), Smith, or Timlin, it would be wrong, wrong, wrong
What I would like to see is Moose getting his 20th win. I dont care if its against the Bosox or anyone else, I'd just like to see it happen for him. The guy has had a wonderful career and would like to see him top it off with a 20 win season especially since there is talk that he will retire after this season no matter what.

loss tonight at Yankee Stadium ?

Yea you lost me there Ed..
There, now that I feel better, let me rephrase....................
Since 2002, no World Series champion has won a postseason game the year after they won the World Series.
Does this now make sense

Since 2002 the only defending World Series Champion to qualify for the play-offs the next season was the 2004 Red Sox.

That was a great scene tonight after the game - I can't wait for the postseason!
(I tip my cap also to Dan and Steve for being great sports).

Has there been a less exciting Yankees/Red Sox series this decade than the one starting today?
For Yankees fans!
