Watching the Rays celebrate reminds me of "The Idiots" in 2004. The Rays were the better team and if they'd beat us in 5 I think it would be an easier loss to swallow.

It should be a fun World Series to watch.

Well we had a great year and it sucks to lose a game 7 in the ALCS but hey we got nothing to be ashamed of.

    << <i>

<< <i>I don't know what to feel right now. >>

Feel good that it's 8 days till the Celtics open defense of their title

Feel angry that Francona really hurt their chances in that game

Feel like the Sox will be out for some serious revenge next season - especially because Tampa pitchers hit like 8 Red Sox batters in the series

Feel depressed because there's no more Red Sox baseball for 5 1/2 months

Feel sympathy for Varitek because he went out with such a whimper for the team he's been with for 11 years (and no one was harder on him than me)

And Feel pride that we still have 2 championships this decade.

My final post in this thread for the year. Thanks gentleman. >>

Well said. That's a poem, if I ever read one.

Yeah. Was actually surprised to see them get this far. I thought they were over achieving all year long. Varitek has been abysmal offensively, so has Big Papi, Lowell is MIA, and Ellsbury was underwelming (serves him right for signing with Scott Boras). That bottom order was scarily bad tonight. When Drew, Youk, and Bay go dead, you just don't have any bullets any more. Too much for Pedroia to carry.

All this goes back to Game 2, which they "should" have won.

It was a great season - the Sox went farther than anyone could have expected. We lost Manny, and kept going. We had injuries to Lowell, and Beckett, and Drew, (among others) and still beat the Angels and made it to the ALCS. It came down to one game.

Congrats to the Rays. It looks like we will be seeing Boston and Tampa battling in the AL East for some time to come.

Jerry the EXCUSE machine is in "post" season form image

All of the sudden the Sox "lost" Manny! Injuries! Injuries! Injuries!

No one except Sox fans and Rays fans will ever remember "how far" the Sox got this year.

Sorry Jerry, with the mouth YOU HAVE anything short of a World Series win is utter FAILURE image How many times did Yankee fans have to listen to your blabbering about how no World Series win meant failure? How many times did you sport Yankee post season opponents icons?

Ahhhh Sox fans like Jerry make tonight so so SWEET.

    Sorry Paul!

Congrats to the Rays! The Red Sox were living a charmed life after winning 9 elimination games in a row.

Should be a good series with the Phillies -- I say Phils win in 6, unless Hamels has a bad start, then its a toss-up.

Garza pitched a hell of a game, and beat a great performance by Lester. The difference was in taking advantage of the few mistakes from each pitcher. It could have easliy been a 4-3 Red Sox win if Pedroia did not get under that pitch from Wheeler right over the plate in the eighth inning.

    Now!!

Latest Rumor: Peavy for Ellsbury, Suckholz, and a minor leaguer. Sounds enticing, but you wonder how Peavy would do in the AL East. I am not familiar with his stuff.

My last comments on this thread are I am glad it's not the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers or Mets in the series. YOU ALL HAD GREAT SEASONS.....now let me finish my thought process. I am just tired of hearing about Red Sox nation, how great the NY teams are and how Manny is going to save the Dodgers......that said and I'll repeat it twice, by the middle of November I will probably also be tired of hearing about the Phils and Rays. OK being from Cleveland it is nice to see Charlie take the Phils there and youth has been served by the low budget team, but I hope everyone else will agree that by the middle of November we will all be tired of hearing these stories over and over and over and over and over.......think you see my point. Oh I forgot I said I'd say it twice, by the middle of November I will probably also be tired of hearing about the Phils and Rays. Have a great World Series everyone al.

It seems to me like the media is doing a pretty good job of ruining people's enjoyment of sports these days. I've read a lot of comments lately about people being sick of fill-in-the-blank teams. I hope that people will eventually come to the understanding that successful teams will always, eventually, get more media attention than losing teams. Right now there is absolutely no reason for the media to talk about the Cleveland Indians or the Seattle Mariners. They are irrelevant to the current storylines. Don't get me wrong, I understand the feeling. I found myself starting to hate Brett Favre before the season started because that was all I ever heard about. But that wasn't entirely Brett's fault.

For now, I'm going to continue hating the Yankees because that makes the rivalry more fun. I'll also hate the Phillies for a few games because I'd like to be able to say that the Sox at least got beat by the best team in the game this year. And I'll go ahead and hate ESPN for not knowing when to say when on the force feeding of there chosen teams.

Who cares what the media or others think is how I see it. I'm so happy we get to enjoy Yankees vs. Red Sox not only during the regular season, but also during the off season as well. Anyone not in either of those camps just wouldn't understand how special it is to go at it
like we do. Actually, it was a little weird seeing us battle the Rays for seven games. I was sitting watching us compete in a domed stadium and actually a little sad that we weren't playing NY. In my opinion, there is nothing better in sports then Red Sox vs. Yankees
in the postseason. It just doesn't get any better then that.

Rivalries are great, I understand it is great to watch Yankees/Red Sox. Just like it's great to watch Cowboys/Redskins, Lakers/Celtics etc, etc. What I dislike is like what TheVon mentioned, that being when ESPN doesn't know when to say when on the force feeding of there chosen teams. I like seeing the underdogs have there day but even that can get to be too much, which I think will happen with the Rays. If you are a baseball fan you are already aware of all the intricate stories related to them....and now we will be hearing them again for the next two weeks over and over and over....

Kudos to all the teams that made the playoffs. At times the games were exciting and other times interesting, but entertaining to say the least. I think this will be a great series to watch and count me in as one of those who preferred this final as neither team has either been there or not in a long time. Its great for the sport to have Phillies and Ray fans experience a World Series.image

I must say my wife is being a pretty good sport about all this. True, her team did lose but think about it. Game 5, the Red Sox were down seven runs with seven outs to go. It looked like for sure the Sox were done for. But yet they came back and won that game and made the Rays go the distance! So she's still proud of her Sox and is looking forward to 2009.
