I guess I'm an old-fashioned Sox fan and think the nail isn't in the coffin until the magic number is zero. After the Rays, they have the Jays, Indians, and Yankees in the way.
Al, I do agree with you about Jeter but lets be honest here- its a lot easier to ask Red Sox Nation to give a standing O to him when the Yankees are 9 or 10 games back and pretty much out of the playoffs! >>
Paul
I was sincere and to be honest wasn't even thinking about the Yankees being 9 games or more out of it. I was focused on Jeter and his personal accomplishment. I think those in attendance will certainly give him a warm ovation to recognize his having passed The Iron Horse in hits. Jeter is clearly a first round lock for HOFer status. My personal experiences in Fenway over many years is that the fans recognize accomplishment and talent. I have witnessed many standing O's to the Yankee pitcher being taken out of the game after having pitched very well. Let us not forget the massive ovation Mariano got when introduced at opening day in '05...BUT, that was for another reason. It was nice to see him smile and enjoy the moment.
OTOH, I hope the booing of Damon is over, enough is enough. He has to live with his "I'd never play for the Yankees" comment. I doubt he loses any sleep over that while he enjoys riding around on his yacht. FWIW, I think the Yankees sealed their fate when they dissed Torre, among other things. I'll let all that go, don't want to start another flamerama.
How about PMing me about uploading pics. I tried to join the Red Sox posting on the Registry page, but I must be doing something wrong, as my contributions didn't work.
<< <i>I guess I'm an old-fashioned Sox fan and think the nail isn't in the coffin until the magic number is zero. After the Rays, they have the Jays, Indians, and Yankees in the way. >>
Here's the thing. At the conclusion of the Sox-Rays series we will have 10 more games. (the first 3 in Toronto and the final 7 at Fenway with 4 against the Indians and 3 against the Yankees) Of these 3 series' the only unfavorable one is the Toronto series. The past 2 seasons we have had a late Sept series against Toronto in Toronto. The results of those series' speak for themselves. '07 we went 0-3 & '06 we went 1-3. However if the Sox can gain momentum by sweeping the Rays they will most likely roll up to Canada and take 2 of 3 from the Jays. Then we go back to Fenway, where are season numbers are 52-22 (second only to the Rays 53-22) to face the Indians(who we havn't lost to all season) and the Yankees. Where as the Rays have to close out the season with 8 consecutive Road games, the final 4 of which are against Detroit.
Now if we lose out in Tampa we will more then likely head up to Toronto and get rolled as we have in the past 2 seasons because we are now behind again and playing with poor confidence. Then we head back to Fenway trying to overplay and will most likely end the regular season 4-5 games back from Tampa. Where as Tampa will now be riding a 2 game winning streak when Minnesota rolls into town and then head up to Baltimore to kick some @$$ and take some names.
The game is all about momentum. Right now the Sox have that momentum and finally have the pennant in their grasp. If last nights fireworks weren't a sign of how much they want it, then I don't know what is.
The silver lining is Beckett pitched pretty well. We need him to make a decent run in the playoffs. I am going tomorrow so hopefully Wakefield will come up big and the bats will be awake!!!
I still think one of the most impressive things about the Rays is their bullpen. Maybe not Percival, but the rest of that pen is just one great young arm after another.
<< <i> They are still a better ballclub then Tampa. >>
On paper and in starpower, you're light years ahead. On the field though, we've been about equal this season.

who said the Sox are a better ballclub then [sic] Tampa? The only way to tell who is the better team is who is celebrating and popping the Champagne in October. Everything else is just smack.
Masterson almost got out of the jam and then he hit Floyd on a 0-2 pitch! He seemed to be choking a bit there -- hopefully that means he will not choke in the postseason.

Beckett didn't pitch the ninth because Francoma is a here kitty kitty and is trying his best to be the anti-Grady Little.
I don't care if he has won 2 WS titles in 4 years, I'm going to second-guess him every time he does something stupid (which keeps me busy, of course). I love the Sox, I hate the Sox, you know the drill.
looks to me like the Sox have a magic number of five for playoffs (Sox wins/MN losses). Could that be true? If so, cool. Don't play Lowell another inning if that's the case...save him for when he's needed. Same with Ortiz

Sox will either be playing the Angels or White Sox for sure. I hope they play the Angels, so that team that plays no one out west can be exposed. What a weak division they play in, and have an inflated W-L record because of it. Then Mike Scioscia says the division winner doesn't get enough of an advantage, and they should have a 4-1 home field advantage on the wild card team come playoff time. I think he'd be singing a different tune if his team played in the AL East.
So I say bring on the Angels, so we can take them to the shed once again !

Tonight is the game that tells me the Sox are the wild card team. Worked in 2004, hope it works again
WOW, Red Sox are getting taken to the shed tonight by the Rays and they are talking smack against the Angles? LMAO, the only weakness is in the wildcard race...you can thank those teams that you made the playoffs!
I hate for the 3rd game to have ended like that, especially with Wakefield going for the Sox. We always hate to see him get blown up like he did.
However, good series all around and I'd still call this thing FAR from over so I wouldn't start the Wildcard talk just yet. Atleast both teams have the confidence that one way or another, they'll probably be in the playoffs in a few weeks. Definitely a great feeling to have that confidence down here in Florida, no matter how we get in, whether it's by taking the division or grabbing the wildcard.
There's plenty of time left, but as long as the Sox make the playoffs, I'm happy. The Rays really impressed me this series, no matter what you think of them, they deserve a lot of credit for hanging in there all season long.
And, I definitely don't hope we get the Angels first round. Chicago? That sounds like a good matchup to me - then the Angels in the ALCS.
The worst part about losing these last 2 games is all our momentum is gone now and we are headed up to Toronto for a 3 game set. Historically over the last 2 years we have had a late september series in Toronto and our record in those 7 games is 1-6! I'm really keeping my fingers crossed and praying for the next few days to go by as painless as possible.
The best thing about being a Red Sox fan today is that no matter what happens we will either gain on the Rays or put distance between us and the Twins.

Momentum is really only important once the postseason begins. Heck, we were down 3-1 to the Indians last year, and "momentum" led us to three straight wins. Just wake me up when the playoffs begin. That's when things get serious. Right now, not much else matters.
I didn't get to watch the game but the score made it look like it must have been a fun one to watch. Glad we got that one nailed down. Magic Wild Card number is now down to 3 and then, if they don't care about winning the AL East, it'll be time to start resting up our starters for the 2nd Season.
What's the deal on Bartolo Colon? I read that he was allowed to go to the Domican Republic for personal reasons, then told the Red Sox he wouldn't be returning. Red Sox fined him (so far) a day without pay.

What do you mean, Dan? Let me see - since 2004, the Sox have gone into the playoffs 3 times, and won the whole thing twice. They haven't won a playoff series since the mighty choke job of 2004 (losing three in a row since then).
