It's that exciting time in the season when they start posting the magic numbers in the standings. The Red Sox magic number to clinch the wild card is 14. Since the Rays are 1.5 ahead of us and their magic number is 20, I guess that means the magic number for the Sox would be 22?
Well I turn all of my hopes and dreams to Red Sox Nation now. I seriously like our chances at winning the division, Im going to focus on this for now as there is no need to listen to rogue Sox haters talking negative about the post season and jarring back and forth with that until the time comes.

it doesn't feel like 2005 to me, this team is better
I don't think we've ever gone into the playoffs with four potential shut down pitchers. Beckett and Lester are top notch shut down guys, and Byrd and Dice-K are potential shut down guys. I don't think Wake gets the ball over Byrd in the postseason.
Keep the faith oh my brethren in Red Sox Nation. Let the haters hate and stew in their hatred...we all know who they are. Pathetic poor sports who love to live in the past. Jealousy and anger is what they know, nothing more.
The key is that we are at home and the Rays have been swept by the Jays. Ortiz seems to be back on, and Drew and Timlin can play cribbage in the bullpen as far as I'm concerned. It would be great to take 2 out of 3 from the Rays and build a lead back up.
BTW, I heard a rumor the Perkdog is springing for Opening Season tix for the '09 season for us. What say Perk? My preference would be down the 3rd base line, no sun to obscure the view...unless of course you scoop Monstah seats.
It's weird, now that the football season is over, I can now continue to focus 100% attention on the Red Sox. Usually there's a 1-2 week lapse as football excitement takes over for me. Not this year I guess.
People hating on the Sox are all forgetting one thing. This team hasn't fielded it's best lineup in months. They're all going to be getting right at the same time - PLAYOFF time. And they still have the MVP leader (Pedroia) plus two great clutch guys (Ortiz/Youk) and two big time pitchers and one that drives you crazy but still somehow gets it done (Beckett, Lester, Dice). Give me the Red Sox rotation in the playoffs against any other team's rotation right now. I like my chances.

Mike,
I'll be selling several Red Sox sets I've accumulated. Go to the Registry and I almost parallel your collection, I own the Teddy Ballgame sets. I plan to keep my 55 Topps set, but have several extra PSA 7s, a few 6s and 5s in 1955 Topps. I'm not having any fire sale, but will consider any fair price we might come to...PM me if interested with your list of needs. Maybe we can work a deal.

Tell ya what fellas, if we can all get to a game the beers are on me!
HUGE SERIES HERE!!!!!!!! LETS WIN THIS FREAKIN' SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great game tonight. My only complaint is with Big Papi. If he's going to whine about not seeing pitches without Manny around, he should take some swings at these meatballs down the pike and not complain to the ref when he gets rung up.

Ah Perk, I'm printing this post, just in case. Do you know what beer costs at Fenway??? If anyone is serious about meeting for a game at Fenway, I'm in. We could meet at Cheers and then take the T to Kenmore. Gotta get the flavor of all those nasty Yankee T-shirts and of course do RemDawgs place.
MEGA win tonight, is Lester hot or what? We are positioned to win the Division, just gotta stay healthy and focused. Things are lookin' good.

I remember last year we talked about Papi taking too many pitches, bottom line its a lame excuse imo. His wrist is still bothering him so that may be the reason he is not putting up PAPI type #'s but our lineup is providing enough protection for him so I dont believe that he has a good argument there.

Can't get back to Fenway, but I am going next Wednesday to the Trop to see the Sox! Anyone can make the trip, I'll buy the beer!!!

I just might take you up on that brother! I will definitely try to get to at least one playoff game, maybe another game before the season is out. Especially if you're buying!
<< <i>Lester has 2 shutouts and the Sox have 6 in games he's pitched in. This kid is a great story and he's the game one starter of any playoff series IMHO. >>
Hey, there is no one happier to see Lester pitch this well than me. But you can't tell me that Beckett, with his postseason brilliance, is not the game one starter. Beckett, Lester, Dice-K, and maybe Wake 4th.

agreed, Beckett starts game one, Lester game two, and Matsuzaka game three. I think Byrd is a game four starter if they go with four starters. Wakefield is in the 'pen. Walks (not to mention passed balls, wild pitches, and stolen bases) really kill a team in postseason, so Byrd makes more sense than Wakefield
Somehow I got swayed by Lester's brilliance this year and forgot Beckett and his dazzing post season exploits. As long as we see the same Beckett that pitched on Friday it will be all good.... I stand corrected!

Careful, careful!! I'm retired, fly free and like beer. I could be in Tampa any day of the week and easily find my way to the Trop. Ah, would that beer be delivered to my seat, or do I have to stand in line with you so you can pick up the tab every inning??
I agree that Lester would make a better #2 post-season starter, but I think they go with Dice-K for no other reason than respect for his age (being a couple years older than Lester) and the fact that they paid a bazillion dollars to bring him to Boston. It's just like when the season opened in Japan. Beckett should have been an opening day starter, but they gave it to Dice out of respect. Am I wrong?
How about a game at Fenway next year, everybody? That would give us all a chance to clear our schedules, get tickets, and save up our beer money, especially for those of us that would be traveling "home."
I'll definitely be there - I go to several games a year, so it would be cool to meet up with the Sox faithful from here at a game next season.
Barndog, I forgot about Byrd. You are right - he'd be a great 4th starter, given how well he's pitched lately. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Francona give the 2 spot to Dice-K, as Von said.
Lester has been near lights-out much of the time, not so for Matsuzaka. If Francona starts Lester in game 3 instead of game 2, he hasn't been paying attention. Yeah, 16-2, ERA below 3, that's all nice, but the walks and "having to pitch out of jams" that Matsuzaka is known for this year just won't cut it in the playoffs.
I don't disagree with you, Barndog. I just think they'll go with Dice-K second as a PR/Saving Face move. Besides, if we win home field advantage, it would be better to have Lester pitch away from Fenway Park where lefties tend to struggle more . . . not that that has been an issue for Lester.
any question about who is second up in the playoffs was answered after the third inning tonight. You can't have that kind of performance (yeah, he only let up two runs) and win in the playoffs.
Any idea why Francone didn't make the Ellsbury/Ortiz move instead of Varitek? I know v-tek WAS on a tear but he looked awful all night. Let's score some freakin runs manana!

Nice to see Ortiz get on the ball again. Gonna be exciting in Fenway next three days.
