Interesting read. I've never been a fan of wood-grained card borders/designs so '87T isn't on my list. Neither is '85T, but my critera centers only on photography and card design. The 85 Olympic sub set cool, but so are the 84D diamond kings and rated rookies.

I'll bet even a #1-5 list of the 80's sets from collectors here will result in many varied answers. Of the 80's, I really like 83T, 86-87D's, 89UD, 85F, 87F and of course my #1 is 84D. I'd probably pick 1983T as #2 and them from there it would be very tough to pick the next 3.

    1- 84 donruss
2-81 topps - based on design only, not checklist
3-85 donruss - two high end HOF rookies, original design
4-83 topps - reintroduced two photos on front, three high end rookies, loaded with stars (base/normal card, super vet, and all star cards)
5-84 Ralston Purina - for sick, strange reason

1 - 81 Topps - for some goofy reason I liked the hats
2 - 84 Donruss - one of my all time favorites
3 - 87 Donruss - I like the black bordered cards and I thought the rookie selection was nice
4 - 83 Topps - loved the circles on the cards
5 - 86 Fleer - Just thought these were nice looking cards..

You know this would probably make another great thread if it hasn't already been done sometime in the past.....

    1. '84 Donruss - Need I say more?
    2. '87 Fleer/'87 Donruss - Like the selection of players and basic designs
    3. '85 Donruss - Tough black borders and nice cards of Clemens and Puckett
    4. '83 Topps - Always liked this set
    5. '87 Topps - Liked the player selection and I was actually a fan of the wood bordered look
Honorable mention - I really like the '80 cards because it was the year that I really started to collect baseball cards a little more seriously

Thanks for the link, what a great stroll down memory lane. My favorite from the '85T review, "I already know I got a Dan Quisenberry All-Star and an Orel Hershisher with a gigantic old-as-time gum stain on the back, which is actually quite aesthetically pleasing…"

Before qualifiers, gum stains were a beautiful result of picking up that waxy feeling slice of Heaven. You knew you had 1 out 15 cards that would be flawed before you got started. I prayed it wouldn't be the Wade Boggs or Ryne Sandberg. I loved Boggs and my main trading partner would have gotten a nosejob if he thought the procedure was named after the Cub second baseman. One of my main regrets from that period, besides my lack of Clemens rookies, is losing my 85 Topps All Wax Cleveland Indian Team set.

    My list:
#1- 1986 Topps, I do love those black borders
#2- 1984 Donruss, we all know why
    #3- 1983 Topps
    #4- 1987 Donruss
    #5- 1987 Fleer

81 fleer and donruss, and no topps!!!?!?!?!?! I just can't hang with the bad photos and all the errors. I do actually like the designs of both. I remember being a kid, during the error craze. The newspaper ran a story on the errors, and my brother and I thought they'd be worth big bucks, and talked our mom into believing the same. She sent us to the 7-11 with a twenty, and we bought a bunch of packs. Pretty cool memories.

I have to disagree with this guy...87 topps best set?

    I'd say:

    85 donruss
    84 donruss
    87 fleer
    84 fleer
82 topps (this set is really growing on me lately)
    81 topps

I opened the first couple bricks(first two 1-110, and the mattingly brick) and only pulled about three good cards. The depression was killing me, so I put it up for a few days. I'll make sure to check your list, if I don't need it you can have em

that sucks ralston...how much did you get the factory set?? what was wrong with the cards centering or corners?? is it true they are small in the factory set then in the packs?
  • Options
$70 for the set, so pretty good. I've sold raw sets on ebay for not much less, so I think it was pretty good deal. I'd show a few scans, but for some reason I can't get them posted. The box and packaging within was clean, but diffently the worst factory set I've busted (i've busted 4 84's, and 4 or 5 85s.) The dread rounded corners are very pronounced, centering is disgusting across the board, and even the centered ones just don't have good eye appeal. Color just isn't as nice as other 84 factory sets I've busted. I've only opened three of the cellos, so I still have some more to go. I just got frustrated after the first two, and the mattingly brick, and gave up.

some of those bricks are like gold if they contain certain mint and centered cards..........................
  • Options
My first factory set was like that. It seemed like every card was a minimum very solid nine. I'm still submitting cards from that set. I got an 84 fleer update set from Kruk cards last year that was the same, so I guess I have gotten lucky, just not lately.

    ok....so Donruss sends me a 2001 Anniversary Autograph of a 1984 Don Mattingly...1 out of 25.

    It's slabbed in a BECKETT holder with 7.5 (Centering 7..Corners 9..Edges 9..Surface 8)..

1st off...what's up with that?? Why would Donruss still have one of these....why would they have Beckett grade it....you'd THINK they could have MINT copies signed!!

BLAHHHHHHHHH ..it's raining and this is supposed to make up for an error they had back in November!!

And they also sent a Randy Johnson 89 Donruss card from the same set...auto'd out of 25...same thing...BECKETT 7.5...

    Scans to follow...

Any idea of price?? The cards from that set numbered out of 250 are listed at decent $$$$..but all others are N/A...

    Any help??
  • Options
I don't know how donruss does it, but UD and topps actually buys the cards on the open market for these types of issues. So the cards they get aren't screaming mint.

Round two of my last minute special submissions. Not great, compared to last. The last one I had %50 10s, this time only one. But the one is another Slaton. I singlehandedly broke the pop report on that one, two tens and they are both mine. Probably broke my chances of getting some good coin on the first Slaton.

ALSO, I included the 1985 Donruss in the list, maybe help answering a question alot of us had/have. This card screamed and was flawless, besides the dreaded "factory set" corners. I only submitted it to see what would happen. So as far as I'm concerned, PSA does downgrade for the factory set corners.

I think we need a steel cage so we can hold tournaments for the Slaton card......maybe we can start one for each of the hard to find 84 Donruss cards.....just think of the publicity it would get.....not sure where all the collectors are for the set but I'm in Ohio, appears Arny is in Florida and Bug is on the West Coast....we can hold hold the steel cage matches in St. Louis.....

Well, enough for my sense of humor this Sunday morning.......

    Good luck on the Slaton.......

Just curious how many of you would have interest in a rack case?? I may have a line on one. The guy doesn't really wanna sell it, but we maybe able to work something out. I've known the guy for years, he has a small stash of unopened 80s stuff but I didn't know he had 84 donruss stuff untill recently. I don't have the cash to pick it up myself (wish I did), I am likely being forced to medical retire this year, so I have to slow down my spending.

Price wise what would be good? I have been eyeballing an 85 case in an ebay shop for months, asking 599. I thought about 900?

I would love to get my hands on an unsealed rack case, but the most important issue is how it has been handled. Even an average-handled case will probably produce dinged corners in at least some of the boxes/packs. Since most of the cards will be too O/C to submit anyway, if you add the dings to the mix what is your money buying you? My experiences with newer unsealed cases is you will still find dinged corners even though the case has shows minimum handling.

Seeing it in person and giving the case an honest assessment is the way to go before plunking down coin. I think $900 give or take is a fair price. Kruk cards still has their wax case for $3K and is a joke in my opinion. There's obvious damage to it (partial missing flap) and it looks real beat.

Regardless, I'd be in the mix or buy it outright if it's a clean case. Keep us posted.
