    Guys,
Although I truly love this 84' Donruss design and drool often when I see stuff in this thread, I think I am definitely out for the long haul.
I have a handful of PSA 9's I would be willing to sacrifice out to fledgling collectors at $1.50 a card and actual postage beyond that. Anybody interested in the list let me know.

Ray......good to hear from you. Hope all is well and remember that independent clinical trials have concluded that 1984D will stay in your blood a long, long time. image

    Stephen,
Got the Righetti today and it's a dead-centered blazer! Thanks for the heads-up and helping a fellow collector. I added it tonight along with this scan.........

Only a few more to go........the summit is getting closer!

No problem Bill, Glad you liked it and glad to have helped.

My other 84 Donruss 10's are listed on E-bay this week along with some low pop 9's
if I werent at work I would post a link. I have a few more to send in and I am thinking about busting an 84 Donruss wax box, The ones in my auctions came from racks. Does anyone have any stories to share about 84 Donruss wax box busts ? Good or Bad ?

I busted one box, and did OK. I rather have racks, but can't find them.

My last box gave me a handfull of stuff

Ralston, BBC Exchange has some loose racks if you want to give them a try.
Did you get any cards from the wax box that were 10 worthy ? How bad were the gum stains and chipping. What was the biggest quality issue with the wax box ?

I sent in a 50 card submission yesterday, most of them were from the wax box I opened. I will keep everyone informed on what's going on. I still have about half the box remaining.....I think I'll keep these unopened until the next rainy day......

Hey softparade, I am showing great restraint....but believe me it's tempting......also I have two factory sets that I still haven't opened all the individual bricks yet......I'll probably get to those on that same rainy day......

Oh forgot to mention...it's been raining in the Cleveland area almost everyday for the last two weeks.....today it's partly sunny but who know's, tomorrow is calling for showers....soooooo maybe I'll me ripping sooner than later!!!!image

Thinking back, no tens out of the hole box. About a dozen nines, and a whole lot of OCs. Most of my set came from a huge lot purchased from JTCards (on Ebay), and self submits from factory sets. I have had marginal luck with wax (but only tried one box), but great luck on factory sets. I still get 9s and an occassional ten from factory sets that I have picked over a few times. The only problem is busting open factory sets just isn't as fun as regular unopened.

I'd still love to get a rack case, but I have a feeling if i ever found one it'd be priced a little high. There is an 85 rack case on ebay, but it seems to be a little high. And I have stopped submitting the black biotches, I'll snag a couple on ebay now and then.

If anyone ever comes across a rack case, and doesn't wanna spring for the whole thing, I'd be willing to split it. I have a line from local an old school show dealer on factory sets at 99 each, and have been considering a few. The guy also has a few hand sets for $55 that look nice. He's one of those anti grading types (I don't need to pay someone to tell what condition my card is in), so they might be pretty grade able cards. Iv'e been really close to getting a few of each, but I've been holding out for racks.

There's the wax case Kruk cards has for $3K, but it really looks beat. My experiences from busting cases of 80's product is that just a little wear showing on the outside of the case usually means a lot of touched corners inside. From the looks of Kruk's case, I'll bet a LOT of the cards will be 8's or less because of rough handling over the years - and that's not taking into account all the O/C cards that will likely be found.

I have ten PSA8s that I don't need due to upgrades. I will GIVE to the first person that response to me via email. The following conditions apply

    1) you currently do not have a 1984 Donruss set registered
    2) you use these cards to start a 1984 Donruss set in the Registry
    3) you pay for the shipping

These are free to the first person who can agree to these terms and send me an email to Jeffm359@comcast.net. I'm not gonna bother listing the cards, if you haven't started a set it shouldn't matter. They all are commons

I have entertained starting this set for a while. Can I get a quick run down as what to expect to pay on the open market for 9's and 10's? Unopened?

My 78 set has really slowed to a crawl as I need under 30 cards in PSA 9. TOUGH to find. I want to start some 57 Topps too but the allure of opening packs and submitting myself is just too strong image

So YOU'RE the Dan..................Great to have you aboard. Fair warning - this set gets in your blood and the more you delve into it the more you'll get hooked. There's plenty of product out there, it's a little more forgiving and cheaper than those '78's that I think you like image but like all cards the centering will drive you nuts.

That's ok however, cause we're all nuts on the 84D train!

That case is pretty beat. Kruk does stand behind their product. I recently had a cheap junk case from them that ended up being trashed, they gave me a full refund, no questions asked.

I can't go on the hook for a whole case, but would be interested in splitting up if it was in better shape. It be fun to find a few of you on the west cost, meet somewhere, and rip that thing open. Still $150 a box seems steep when I can get clean factory sets for 100.

purchased a rack pack last week just for kicks. got it today. busted it. major staining/dingy on the cards. must have been in a smoky environment. pulled a nice henderson but way o/c. had a sutter on top of the middle rack. centered nicely but dingy in color. overall not pleased with the stains/dinginess, but i did not ask prior to bidding. it was a cheap auction and i knew i was taking a chance on condition. i basically got what i ordered.

    Thanks,

Considering sending PSA the majority of the 84 donruss set. I have a 3 factory (1 still in plastic bricks) and 2 hand collected by myself back in 84. Any suggestions on what the tough cards are or things out of the ordinary I should look for? Centering seems to be the big issue, color clarity not so much. Thanks
  • Options
    1) Centering can be tricky, as are the occasional diamond/MC card.
    2) Also watch the corners on the factory sets, they tend to get curved because of the tightly wrapped bricks. These can be really tricky to pick up on, especially if you get lazy.
    3) I've had some surface wrinkles suprise me when I get cards back with low grades.

Coloring and print quality is generally good.

Tough cards include most of the rated rookies and diamond kings. I don't know why, but I never seem to pull good ones myself. There are some other cards that are real tough, but I'm not far enough along in my set to pick them out yet.

I have pics of my whole set listed in the registry. I'm at 45% so you may have a good group of pics to look at and get an idea of what grades what.

    Ralston/alnav,

Thanks, with the may/june special that PSA is running, I figure I can get the set graded for around 3 grand. What I can't get graded or comes back with a low grade, I can go from there. I will go through the thread.

    Weekend,
If you've never submitted 84D or have very little experience with them, REALLY consider sending a smaller sample - say 50 or so - and see how it goes. There will always be $5 specials, so don't let this special entice you to submit most of the set.

Several years ago I submitted my first 84D submission of about 550 '84D's and due to a technicality had them returned. Without going into detail, I'm glad it happened this way. There is a learning curve with each particular issue and I almost spent $3K finding out. In a nutshell, I wouldn't have gotten the % of desired grades I had hoped for............

I hate to ask this type of question as I have read through alot of the thread and can't find myself a good answer. I am reading through it fast so please forgive me if I missed the obvious. What would be a reasonable price to pay for common PSA 10's and lower pop common PSA 10's ????????

I've paid as low as $6 plus change each for small high-pop lots to as much as $45 each for very tough examples and would even go higher on a select few. Normally, average psa 10 commons sell for between $11 and $20.

Softie - No fear. Not only is this an amazing set, but this is a great bunch of guys who love an active discussion on this set too. You'll always get plenty of encouragement here.
Bill knows the nuances of condition and submitting as well or better than anyone in deep on a set that I have been associated with. A real wealth of quality knowledge...and a killer set too!

I would also recommend a small initial submission. I got hit pretty hard with lots of 8's on my first 20 carder back in the day. After that I got a lot more discriminating on corners and especially centering. If you want a chance at pulling 10's, make sure your centering is spot on. If in doubt throw it out; literally. Then, and only then, you can get 9's and 10's on a consistent basis. At least half or more of the cards are fairly easy in 9. If you discriminate properly those will be a cinch. Otherwise you can fully expect many of the same cards to be consistently off center and that list is pretty long. Patience, though, will yield a nice example on those eventually too.

Best of Luck to the recently new 84' Donruss set starters. It's a blast. Nice cards just glimmer when they're right!

I had a submission that went in on the 8th, was logged into PSA on the 18th and the grades popped today. None were 84 Donruss so I won't bore you all with the results...but let me say I'm quite happy with the 73 Topps basketball cards I submitted......check out submission 594003, zip 44130 if interested.....this will give you all some idea of how long it's taking this month...or at least how long it took me....from Ohio...

Still no word on the submission of Donruss that I sent last Friday. I'll keep you all informed.....al.

Darn, I was hoping to have many offers for those final few! image

Any new news on the '84 Donruss front? How about them Joe Carter cards consistently hitting nearly $400 per! Nice.

    Arny,

kkpkrk is a madman. I think he's lost only one Carter 10 of the last 8 to 10 sold. Not sure what his deal is but you can count on him being at the finish line.............

Picked up a few HOF'ers and a couple of misc. common 10's the last few weeks, so here's a little eye candy for the group. I've been looking for a real nice Henderson and was finally able to BIN a beauty. The Trammell is about as dead-centered as you'll find.

    Nice ones there Bill!

Are you going to continue to upgrade the set as you see them come available? Or, will you start a new set anytime soon?

    Arny,

My goal has been to assemble one of the nicest registry sets overall on a card-per-card basis and I think it's close, so I will continue to fine-tune the set with 9's and 10's to my liking (have a list of about 60 to 75 cards I'd like to improve upon in either 9 or 10). I have also decided to 'PSA 10' most if not all the HOF'ers. At some point after the Master is finished and the above accomplished, the plug will be pulled on any future upgrades and I will then retire the set.

Looking into the crystal ball, the future belongs to you guys. Between you, Robert, Al, Brent, and others, the future 84D picture looks real bright.

As for me, I doubt I'll do another big set; although I'll never say never......... image

Anyone happen to have a Guidry or Nettles in PSA 9 they may want to part with ?

The Guidry is a toughie, we've discussed that one on the boards here. But, I gotta look around and see if I have another Nettles. I doubt it, but I'll look.
