Arny, Yep, it's here to stay and updated my set to include the scan. I'll have to check out the latest SMR as I wasn't aware of the price increase. For as long as I've been involved with the 84D's the Mattingly 10 has always sold above and sometimes way above SMR.
Just checked and it looks like a $75 or $100 increase. That's good but if you had 5 of them and set them all at a BIN of $575 each they'd all be snapped up in a heartbeat IMO.
Even during the 'slow' period on '84 Donruss cards, the Mattingly 10 didn't drop under $500 or so. The new SMR shows an increase up to $575, but these things have been hitting $700-800 pretty consistently lately.
Great job on grabbing that one Bill!
Any new news from the rest of the '84 Donruss gang?

I just listed a PSA 10 Ryne Sandberg on Ebay at .99 with no reserve. Also listed about 100 other oddball cards that will help PSA Master Set collectors under user ID gregmo32. gregmo32@aol.com
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy! Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
I just recieved 2 factory sealed sets today (paid $85 each). I have opened a few bricks from each set. Each Mattingly has an extremely minor diamond cut, one OC Joe Carter. The Other Joe Carter has 3 sharp corners and one rounded corner from the cello wrap. Does anyone know what PSAs standard deduction is for the "cello rounded" corner?
Also got a creased ripken, each Nolan Ryan has some print lines.
Oh well, I got them for a decent price. I am pretty sure that there are some 10s in there.
Scott
My sets: 1977 Topps Star Wars - "Space Swashbucklers"
Scott, I'd be very interested in the remainder of the set if you're looking to sell - ie. the commons and the diamond kings. Pull all the star cards you want and I'll buy the rest of the set if you're interested. Bill
Here is my plan for the cards. I was thinking about pulling the prospective 10s and low POP 9s for a PSA grading special. I'll be submitting them with the prospectives of a wax box that I just opened. I was then thinking about putting together one or two near mint raw sets with the remainder cards. Let me know what you are interested in.
I haven't finished opening all of the factory bricks yet, but so far I am seeing that there is a greater chance of razor sharp corners in the wax box, even though many of the wax box cards get damaged. It would be interesting to see the percentages, but so far it looks like a wax box may end up yielding slightly higher percentage of 10s. Again, this is just my initial observation.
I cracked some 85 donruss factory bricks. These cards are in fantastic shape, centering and edging are crisp like an apple. The only catch is the slightest bit of cello rounding.
thanks, Scott
My sets: 1977 Topps Star Wars - "Space Swashbucklers"
I'm not sure what the "standard deduction" is, but I submitted a 1985 Donruss Puckett last year and got back a 9. It's only flaw was those cello corners you need a loupe to see.
Please email me at: bdavidson@prodigy.net about your 84D cards. Please turn on your PM (your private CU email function) by going to your 'profile' and clicking 'allow private messages'.
Frank, The 8 has a very minute bottom LH corner fray that barely visible under lighted glare, and is noticable using a loop. It is properly graded but what a shame.
Hi guys, how's everyone been lately. Waiting for the May specials to pop...hope it's either a 72 to present or a 60-71 special. I have some nice 75 Topps I picked up and want to break open a few of the packs from the 84 Donruss box I bought. Been saving the pennies!! It's been over two months since I sent anything in for grading and I am starting to get antsy
Anyone ever open any 84 Donruss Racks ? These things are hard to find so I bought a few. I will be sending in any gradeables from the bust, I should get them before weeks end, so keep an eye out over on the Sports card and Mem Forum for a 84 Rack bust. I have opened a lot of unopened stuff and I just love racks because they seem to produce the best quality card for grading, Wish me luck !
Wow.........this thread was on the 5th page. Time to bring it up top.
I've got this Mattingly 10 for sale. I bought this for $800 and then shortly thereafter received a 10 on my last submission and that card is now in my registry set.
These normally sell for between $800 and 900, so shoot me an earnest offer and we'll see if we can deal.
Got some 84 donruss back in my latest submission today from the racks I busted a few weeks back. Whadda ya think? All will be listed on E-bay when I get them in.
I think most of us are waiting for our may special submissions. I have about 75 at PSA right now, our your second Mattingly 10 might have a new home with me. I'll share when the grades pop.
Always buying 1984 Ralston Purina PSA 9s and 10s I NEED 19,21, and 29!!!
30 new ones on the way, 3 8's, 20 9's, and 7 10's. Not bad this time, pretty happy with how it turned out (much better than my 85 donruss stuff). No 10's worth mentioning, all commons, no low pops - best one is Tim Raines or Frank Viola. 23.3% 10s on the 84's, and an average of 9.13, just better than my 9.04 of my set. 8's are just filler for now, so that'll drag me up.
Same submissions hammered me on 85 Donruss, was about the same as the 84D on the 84 Fleer update, and gave me a 1 of 1 10 of both Clemens and Ryan on an odd ball 92 McDonalds, and a couple extra 9s of the same.
I'll share some scans when they show up.
Always buying 1984 Ralston Purina PSA 9s and 10s I NEED 19,21, and 29!!!
Guys, I don't collect the set. I collect the 67 set. The 67 set has no threads like this. But this is one of my favorite threads. All you guys sharing stories & the multiple pages of the thread is just awesome. And the scans of cards are just phenomenal. Have not thought of this set in years. But because of the passion & beautiful scans you have shared, it has made me pull out my raw set. These are great baseball cards!! IMHO the last great baseball set. Maybe by the time I start it, all those Moreno, Bumbry & Chambliss' will have better populations!
My favorite thing about those Gossage & Eckersley cards (incredible baseball cards) is they show off the Puma's worn in those days. Reggie in '77 wore them when he hit the 5 HR's in the WS. So they became very fashionable from then on. Eck looks so great in them as well as Brett, Rice, Guidry & so on. Great memories of watching baseball in that time period. Playing jr college ball in California, 83 & 84, my uniform would not have been complete without my pair of Puma's & high baseball stockings.
Ted, Thanks for sharing. I collected 1971 to 1974 as a kid (my mom kept all the cards and I still have the 71's) and really love those years, but the 84D set is stunning for it's design and raw product is readily available. No need to tell you that submittable '67's aren't falling out of closets all over the country. (BTW, 1967 is by far my favority 60's issue and somehow I ended up with over 300 7th series hi-numbers when I rediscovered my childhood collection in 1983 - all are gone with the exception of a few).
I've been heavily involved in the 1984 issue/registry set 3 years now and I don't think I'll ever get tired of looking at these. The deeper I delve into the set, the more hooked I get. You're correct about the Goose. If I had to pick one card to display and one only, #396 Goose gets the nod.
Ahh!!! the plot thickens.......cellophane has been removed from the box. By the way this box was purchased from Baseball Card Exchange...believe I mentioned this earlier in this thread......
PS: Wife's happy, she has new toilet seats...and they even got installed!!
Where is everyone?? I feel like I'm monopolizing the thread.......well I ended up opening eight packs so far. Need help on the Darling card displayed....I think it is definitely submittable....also is the Simpson to off center for submission??? I need him for my set.
Ok, I've opened 16 packs so far and gotten 35 cards that I think are submittable for my collection. I had some others that would be worthy of submission but I already have them. Worst thing I found in the packs was an OC Mattingly rookie.....glad I already have that card. One card I had to pitch, it was mangled in the pack...but overall not bad, the typical OC ...got an Ashby OC, Schmidt DK OC also a couple Carews OC. If anyone has interest in the remaining cards from the 16 packs send me a PM and offer.......the lot will include the OC Mattingly al.
Al, The Simpson and Darling should 9 if the corners are ok. The centering is off (typical T/B on Simpson) but not enough to warrant an 8, unless the grader is having a bad hair day.
Good luck on the rest. I've never seen a Chris Chambliss nicely centered regardless of condition - it'd be great if you'd get one.
I'm absolutely bored, and my set benefited. Entered in all my new submission stuff, and found a box that must have been lost in the move last year. Brought my set up to 45%, and a grade average of 9.04. Still lots of 8's that'll be upgraded, so I should go up a little after another two subs.
I actually picked up about a half dozen PSA 9s that I needed for my set from Mortys. He's got some decent ones out there in his eBay store. Check 'em out guys!

two more 84D 10s should come on monday

The Darling and Simpson are off top to bottom (thin on top). Maybe 9s, but most likely 8. They both look like they have decent eye appeal though
