For those with value modern orders that have been with PSA for several months, were they typically in grading for months, or another stage (eg, research and ID)? I have a 20-card value modern that’s been in research & ID for six weeks and didn’t know if that was unusual. I’ve accepted that it will probably be in grading for months.
I can help with this. Mine were in R&ID for months. And in grading for months.
I have a bunch of value modern I sent in different orders last year that can help with your timeline.

some days im the pigeon, some days im the statue! 😉
For those who know me and my love of 76's this is the sub with 80+ 76's from a very high end set I bought last year, so I've really been looking forward to getting these grades back.
Jeff
That's awesome, Jeff! You'll have to bump up the thread with that purchase when you get them in.
nice to hear they have caught up on the order entry, hopefully they can get a little caught up on the grading aspect next. it is a struggle to see the light at the end of the tunnel when economy or value tiers take weeks to move a day. under that scenario the tiered approach to reintroducing anything below express probably has a very long first tier.
have subbed and landed several big mantles, ryans, berras, aarons along w cultivating together some of the top centered registry sets ever but now youre gonna tell me all of a sudden im ray charles when it comes to picking out some modern tyler herro? im sure its my eye and technique thats changed too, right?

102 card value modern. I have 5 value moderns I sent between July and October of last year and this is the first movement I've seen in months.
arrived 07/13/20
entered 09/09/20
grading - lost track of the exact date, maybe Feb of 2021 ?
Stoked to report it skipped over assembly and right to QA check 1 this weekend !
I could have written that myself as I’m right with you. Also have 5 value orders between July and October with one of mine sent 7/10 and entered 9/8 finally moved Saturday to Assembly and on to QA1 the next day. Mostly 81 Topps Basketball and Hockey for me. Hoping we fly through QA2 but not holding my breath. Good luck on your results!

Damn, sorry Blurry. That is brutal and it’s concerning for anyone with cards out there right now. What is your usual gem rate on ultra modern, isn’t it in the high 40s? This is crazy.

on modern its pretty tricky to pinpoint due to a number of variables. usually mid 60 - 70s but thats with throwing cards in there that i dont mind 9s on, nor expect 10s on. i also tend to throw in sacrificial lambs in there too. but on a sub like this, which is the same base card against three sets? heck, shoulda been high 80% easy. look back a few pages...there was a similar run of 10 soto pink refractors that went 8 or 9 landing 10s. 8 us300 w mostly 9 and 10s. which a 9 IS a 10 for that card. and actually got 2 10s there. i have several other pinks and golds that didnt make the cut, no different than the stack of herros that didnt make the cut either. my sub review, process techniques havent changed. and still have 20/20 vision. this is just an atrocity to laugh at. the true question is whether or not its a sign of things to come? i was really optimistic w the new ownership group and things seeming to be headed in the right direction. now, im not so certain about much. me, personally, im good. but i cant help but think how many people are getting crushed on a daily basis when thier subs pop after waiting patiently for months on end. take bobby’s scenario for instance. precisely why i commented in there that it wasnt that particular card that drove him to the breaking point. rather everything leading up to it. things are bad if a sub is basically dependent upon a coin flip in deciding whether you get a new grader or an experienced one. and if its a change in grading standards, then formally announce it and start it w cards from that date moving forward. dont penalize cards that have been there damb near a year.

I really think I will be able to add some insight into this conversation in regards to 70's cards. I don't have your expereince with modern, but have seen many of your subs, and trust your experience and eye for grades. I've subbed at least a thousand 76's in the last 10-15 years. My gem rate is about 10% on cards I expect to gem. Like you said, I will submit a Nolan or Rose, Eck, etc. knowing it's "only" an 8. But, my rate at landing gems has consistently been a bit over 10%. My recent 76 sub was EASILY the nicest I've ever submitted, it was the nicest set of 80 I've ever seen. It's not even a remote question in my mind. I have 82 of them, so if I don't get at least 8 gems I will not only be bummed but also very skeptical of the way things are being handled at PSA. Fingers crossed for grades soon, and hoping I don't get a smack in the face with a similar situation, where apparently my eyes have deceived me.

wishing and hoping for the best. i think i am in a unique position simply because of the amount of product i ripped and subs i have in. ive had some really good ones lately. but ive noticed well more than my fair share of head scratchers in here too. my overall gem or what i feel as successful percentage rate has dropped significantly. i trust your eye too, 76. i hope and pray yours comes back correctly. i honestly wish you had about 5 or so different subs in to get an overall consensus vs a coin flip on 1.
in the grand scheme of things, this sub is nothing monumental. however, what if it was the occasional subber that put his whole tyler run in for the year, ended up being delayed for months on end and then gets hit w this? would he be back? would he ever trust psa or the process again? i tend to think there are more of these types out there than those that hang out here. think back about the guy that had the pristine topps coins. man he was pissed. righfully so. and he had been subbing for years. whats worse to think is not being able to crack cards out anymore. and even if you could, how long before you actually could. and then...how much would it cost? $30? $50? and then...how long will it take before they get back? another year? two? all this on top of already paying $20 a pop and waiting a year to get these results? the fact that these cards could be tied forever to an unfair 9 assessment is just crazy to me. heard 3 more cases and requests for prior cert # of this happening last night. so its certainly happening. of course no official announcement about that grading change either. too many things going on to think about all the different avenues that could play out, really. its abundantly clear though that the goal posts have moved.on crackouts without notice. why would harsher grading standards be any different?
Maybe PSA is now taking in to consideration the skill level of the player when grading ? (sooooo kidding)
Someone like 'Tyler Herro' should only get a very sporadic 10 due to his lack of skills and early injuries. In turn, Mike Trout should get all 10s, even if the card is warped and melted, but in this current period of inactivity, he should get 5's max.
Now is this possibly the lamest input on card grading that has ever been conceived ?

curious, were those serial #'d modern cards?? any word if they have done that on regular issued stuff?
i did not inquire knowing that before mine even happened it was confirmed that there was one done on a vintage card over the $5K level. i think it's more of a value thing vs a vintage/modern thing. of course, mine was done on a $500 modern card though. so really, who knows?
pretty sure it has to be of a card that was very recently submitted either way. i think cracking out anything prior, that isnt imaged in the data base when you run the cert #, should be good. dont hold me to it.
but this all leads back to the bigger picture. if there's a new rule out there, tell us for petes sake! it's hard to play by the rules when you dont know them! otherwise it's just a game of "you lose".
i wish psa would just hurry up and buy sgc out. relieve all the stress of finding and teaching new graders to practice on my cards. 😉
If this were my business I would go elsewhere, but since I am a card collector whose main focus is PSA graded cards this really stinks. There is no recourse. You cannot even speak to customer service. They have many unchecked incompetent graders or so it seems. All I ask for is consistency and you can’t get that. I sent one card in 3 different grades. PSA 7. Then PSA 6 then finally PSA 8

An 8 should never be confused with a 6 and vice-versa. (Maybe a 6 vs an 8 OC) The standards are so wildly different that it makes no sense how that could ever even happen. By PSA's definition "an 8 is a super high end card that appears Mint 9 at first glance". I have never seen a 6 and from arms length thought, boy, that looks like a 9. How incredibly frustrating! I've had 8's and 9's bump to 10's and 9's that I thought should bump get dropped to an 8 but a 6 is a materially different card from an 8, or at least should be.

I have always said. Publish graders names on every sub. Audit them for consistency. Then reassign or release those too strict or lenient. It is not that hard. Instead let’s alienate our entire customer base with our inability to be transparent about anything.
On another note, this express popped today and grades were right in line as expected. One card vintage and I guessed it was a 3 or 4, graded out at a 3.5.
Certain parts of the process have indeed sped up. It wasn't too long ago that an order would be in QA1 or QA2 for a few weeks at a time. I know this is a one card order, but there are definitely improvements in the overall process.
With recent grading results, I'm hoping my orders don't get graded for a long time. Hopefully by then, the grading standards will be recalibrated to be in line with the published standards that have been in place for decades.
I recently had a ticket stub FLY through the grading process. Maybe tickets are handled differently than cards?? Meanwhile, my order from last June still sits and sits. The quarterly sub update has been sitting on August 9th for awhile.
I just saw this...
PSA no longer requires submitters to decide whether to request “No Qualifiers”, as characteristics such as Centering, Staining, Print Defects and Focus will default to impacting the numerical grade rather than carrying a qualifier. There are exceptions and we encourage collectors to review the updated policy on the PSA Grading Standards page.
On the grading standards page this is what it says:
In addition to a numerical grade, some PSA graded cards also carry a Qualifier to identify specific characteristics of the card. Following is a description of the six PSA qualifiers, 2 of which are required, and 4 that are optional.
So MK and MC are required qualifiers whereas the others are "optional". Wasn't that kind of always the case? And why do "OC, PD, OF" show as optional on the grading standards page but the above announcement says they will default to impacting the numerical grade. I feel like if you asked for NQ then if centering was for a 6 but you're card was a 9, you'd get a 6 or 6.5 whereas if you asked for qualifiers you would get a 9(OC).
My 76 grades just popped. Sent in July of last year, received in sep. I feel like an 18 year old again, with the possible acceptance letter to my top college of choice in my hand. Nervous to open it, lol. Here goes nothing... Will post grades later.

Looks like I too have succumbed to age, and no longer have the ability to accurately predict the grade of a card. I have went from the ability to predict a gem mint 10 70's card at about 10-15% accuracy over the last 15 years down to 1.9% accuracy now. I always mix in a dud or two, so I don't worry about that. In 25 years of collecting 70's cards I've never come across a nicer lot than what I sent in. I've built 1976 sets by combining upwards of 15 sets, opening rack packs/wax packs and cello's and this set alone was as nice or nicer than the combination of those 15 high end sets. If there were truly only 2 gem mint 10's in that lot, then it is beyond worthless for me to ever buy cards with the intent on submitting them, because I have zero idea what a gem mint 10 card is, hell I don't even know what a mint card is any more. NOT 1, NOT even 1 of the 1976 hall of fame players I sent came back a 9, when I felt the Morgan, Rice and Perez all had VERY good shots at gemming. 10 months of time having my money/cards tied up and I believe I would have to sell every single card just to recoup my thousand dollars worth of grading fees if I chose to. The good news is I'm now the owner of a $3K 1976 set with one of the top 23 ellie hendricks and tommy harper cards in the world, so I'm very proud of that (sarcasm being poured on thick)

Wow Jeff, my condolences. What a kick in the teeth.
From the scans, I would have said the Joe Morgan and Willie McCovey cards were equal or better than the Tommy Harper. If PSA thinks this is going to go well for them in the long term, then they should start reading these threads from long time customers. Driving off well respected and knowledgable registry collectors and anyone who collects vintage will leave them to the boom and bust of shiny modern subs.
I couldn't even finish looking through the grades, as seeing those minty fresh ungraded cards and matching them with 7's and 6's was too much.

That is what makes it so irritating to me. If I could wrap my head around what they are thinking (MAYBE GIVE US SOME GRADER NOTES) maybe I could understand. But I agree there was nothing I saw that distinguishes the Tommy Harper card from virtually any of the others. Sure when I get it in hand, maybe I can see some flaws on some of the other cards. But they have had my cards so long I really don't remember what they looked like other than the pictures, and that I was SUPER excited about the Morgan card especially. Here is another picture. The Varney and Morales are both 8's as well and show nicer than the Harper card IMO.

nice to hear they have caught up on the order entry, hopefully they can get a little caught up on the grading aspect next. it is a struggle to see the light at the end of the tunnel when economy or value tiers take weeks to move a day.
under that scenario the tiered approach to reintroducing anything below express probably has a very long first tier.

Awesome. Seems like we are on the same trajectory. Hoping for grades in the next couple of days. Good luck with yours. Hope you hit some big ones.

on modern its pretty tricky to pinpoint due to a number of variables. usually mid 60 - 70s but thats with throwing cards in there that i dont mind 9s on, nor expect 10s on. i also tend to throw in sacrificial lambs in there too. but on a sub like this, which is the same base card against three sets? heck, shoulda been high 80% easy. look back a few pages...there was a similar run of 10 soto pink refractors that went 8 or 9 landing 10s.

_ heard 3 more cases and requests for prior cert # of this happening last night._
curious, were those serial #'d modern cards?? any word if they have done that on regular issued stuff?
Tyler Herro ?
Maybe PSA is now taking in to consideration the skill level of the player when grading ? (sooooo kidding)
Someone like 'Tyler Herro' should only get a very sporadic 10 due to his lack of skills and early injuries. In turn, Mike Trout should get all 10s, even if the card is warped and melted, but in this current period of inactivity, he should get 5's max.
Now is this possibly the lamest input on card grading that has ever been conceived ?
i did not inquire knowing that before mine even happened it was confirmed that there was one done on a vintage card over the $5K level. i think it's more of a value thing vs a vintage/modern thing. of course, mine was done on a $500 modern card though. so really, who knows?
pretty sure it has to be of a card that was very recently submitted either way. i think cracking out anything prior, that isnt imaged in the data base when you run the cert #, should be good. dont hold me to it.
but this all leads back to the bigger picture. if there's a new rule out there, tell us for petes sake! it's hard to play by the rules when you dont know them! otherwise it's just a game of "you lose".
i wish psa would just hurry up and buy sgc out. relieve all the stress of finding and teaching new graders to practice on my cards. 😉
yeah. SGC = PSA east coast office. Put one in Southern IL. too!!
Instead let’s alienate our entire customer base with our inability to be transparent about anything.
it doesnt last long. 😉

Currently collecting.....your guess is as good as mine.
Am I just reading this wrong?

The good news is I'm now the owner of a $3K 1976 set with one of the top 23 ellie hendricks and tommy harper cards in the world, so I'm very proud of that (sarcasm being poured on thick)

dayum. i know the feeling and there are no words. so i wont even try...
I couldn't even finish looking through the grades, as seeing those minty fresh ungraded cards and matching them with 7's and 6's was too much.
oh man, that is rough, sorry

I am extremely pleased with the 10's , being these are my first ones to get from them!!!!
Jeff,
Your sub results just anger me. There is no reason for that type of return. I wish one person at PSA with the ability to effect a positive change would look at these boards and read through this thread. Just absolutely an abomination to do something like this
