My 76 grades just popped. Sent in July of last year, received in sep. I feel like an 18 year old again, with the possible acceptance letter to my top college of choice in my hand. Nervous to open it, lol. Here goes nothing... Will post grades later.

    Jeff

    Good luck!

Want to start my post of my grades with a link to my thread opening this 1976 set that I bought last year from pwcc.

Looks like I too have succumbed to age, and no longer have the ability to accurately predict the grade of a card. I have went from the ability to predict a gem mint 10 70's card at about 10-15% accuracy over the last 15 years down to 1.9% accuracy now. I always mix in a dud or two, so I don't worry about that. In 25 years of collecting 70's cards I've never come across a nicer lot than what I sent in. I've built 1976 sets by combining upwards of 15 sets, opening rack packs/wax packs and cello's and this set alone was as nice or nicer than the combination of those 15 high end sets. If there were truly only 2 gem mint 10's in that lot, then it is beyond worthless for me to ever buy cards with the intent on submitting them, because I have zero idea what a gem mint 10 card is, hell I don't even know what a mint card is any more. NOT 1, NOT even 1 of the 1976 hall of fame players I sent came back a 9, when I felt the Morgan, Rice and Perez all had VERY good shots at gemming. 10 months of time having my money/cards tied up and I believe I would have to sell every single card just to recoup my thousand dollars worth of grading fees if I chose to. The good news is I'm now the owner of a $3K 1976 set with one of the top 23 ellie hendricks and tommy harper cards in the world, so I'm very proud of that (sarcasm being poured on thick)

Wow Jeff, my condolences. What a kick in the teeth.

From the scans, I would have said the Joe Morgan and Willie McCovey cards were equal or better than the Tommy Harper. If PSA thinks this is going to go well for them in the long term, then they should start reading these threads from long time customers. Driving off well respected and knowledgable registry collectors and anyone who collects vintage will leave them to the boom and bust of shiny modern subs.

I couldn't even finish looking through the grades, as seeing those minty fresh ungraded cards and matching them with 7's and 6's was too much.

That is what makes it so irritating to me. If I could wrap my head around what they are thinking (MAYBE GIVE US SOME GRADER NOTES) maybe I could understand. But I agree there was nothing I saw that distinguishes the Tommy Harper card from virtually any of the others. Sure when I get it in hand, maybe I can see some flaws on some of the other cards. But they have had my cards so long I really don't remember what they looked like other than the pictures, and that I was SUPER excited about the Morgan card especially. Here is another picture. The Varney and Morales are both 8's as well and show nicer than the Harper card IMO.

    Jeff,

Your sub results just anger me. There is no reason for that type of return. I wish one person at PSA with the ability to effect a positive change would look at these boards and read through this thread. Just absolutely an abomination to do something like this

    Looking for FB HOF Rookies

thats the thing though. this type of sub isnt just happening w vintage. its happening across the board.

what happens when theyve expanded, buy out sgc perhaps, sunk tons of money into training personnel and IT, the flippers flee and theyve run off loyal guys from every subbing era w this [expletive delete] and/or price points? weve seen plenty of good peeps here alone getting pushed to their own personal breaking points just this week. and this isnt exactly midtown manhattan when it comes to the on line collecting world. how many more months of backlogs and gut punches are left at this pace? i have a nice stack of cards that’d be ready to sub at the current $300 level. even more at the $150 and even $50 level. no way im subbing them anytime soon even if they opened up tomorrow. i can put up w the price increases & the crazy delays but i refuse to pay and wait months on end just to get insulted. because thats basically what it is. a good old fashion slap to the face. nothing more. nothing less.

and here’s the scary thing, i havent looked at the CTD but my sub history and calculations, we are just getting into that huge sept/oct bottlenecking influx. so if they are just flying thru and 9’n things to death in a mad scramble to tackle the mountain, things are gonna get a whole lot slower and worse.

    @AFLfan,

Is there a way to request a review of a small subset of your submission before they are shipped back ?

Thanks blurry. Sad, because I will never send them back and pay more for review. The vast majority will be shattered upon arrival and just stuck into my binder with the rest of the set that I didn't deem worthy of grading.

    @AFLfan,

Is there a way to request a review of a small subset of your submission before they are shipped back ?

    Jeff

    @kevinlenane

Thanks blurry. Sad, because I will never send them back and pay more for review. The vast majority will be shattered upon arrival and just stuck into my binder with the rest of the set that I didn't deem worthy of grading.

yep. know the feeling. never have i ever requested such until that last herro sub. i certainly didnt want to burn my big bridges w this modern sub so just emailed the info@ email and thats what i got back.

ive been conversing privately w kevin (genamint founder) and tagged him above. he’s been very receptive which is reassuring. will bring it up next time we speak as just another sound example.

Sorry to see that Jeff. You had a lot of 10 predictions in there but, as you said, you were only expecting 10% of those to hit. Your grader was probably blinded by refractors when he got your order and none of your cards met 21st century technology expectations. PSA has to be very careful here. Mass overgrading of cards (think BCCG/Pro) can destroy a brand but so can mass undergrading damage the brand. Both impact the brand's credibility.

My 76 grades just popped. Sent in July of last year, received in sep.

That's just plain ridiculous, I'm sorry. Pretty much nothing in terms of an update in relation to progress being made which tells me that there isn't anything to be proud of enough to speak of it. I'm hoping that I'm simply misinformed and that there are 300k cards shooting through there everyday. I'm not even that pressed for it but for having been shut down for 2 months only to find progress actually slowing is inexcusable

Though it can be quite expensive, there's always the option to send a few of the more perplexing undergraded cards to a service that offers subgrades - just to get a more detailed review.

Just like everyone here, I consider PSA the top grading service, but I've never understood why services that offer MORE information about a card's grade - especially since detailed grading notes seem to be in demand - are often held in such low regard compared to PSA.

Definitely should preface those (10) predictions with what you mentioned. I went through the set and stacked cards that were centered well enough to sub. Then I go through them quickly for flaws and make an additional stack. That yielded around 200 cards. At that point I get out the magnifying glasses and look at each in much more detail. If I don’t think a 76 common has a chance at a 10 I won’t bother submitting it. That process has yielded a success rate of between 10-15% on 70’s cards over the last 15 years I’ve been submitting. So I just put 10 by every common though history told me most of them wouldn’t get a 10. Only getting 2 was a shock to the system as I don’t believe I’ve ever had that low of a success rate and these were even higher end than most of my past submissions.

Here is an example of one of my subs from 2017. This is an average sub. They all look like this in the past, I just chose this because it's 50 cards so easy to see percentages.

You do a lot better than I do on 10s. I typically get 3-5 per 500 card sub. That tracks with the overall success rate of vintage 10s as a % of overall submissions. Based on their tighter standards, I expect to go down to 1 10 per 500 if I'm lucky and from 50-75 9's per 500 down to 15-20, again if I'm lucky. Same quality cards but lower grade distribution. I'm glad I'm not a dealer trying to make a living at this or it would put me out of business with that kind of drop in grades.

Just had this one move to assembly, 6 card with an array of vintage and a 1985 Nike Jordan. Also had a regular sub that was logged 4/13/21 go into grading which blows my mind since the dual grading bulk sub is still in r&d.

    Regular Grading CC Renewal

    Rec'd - 11/09/20
    Logged - 11/24/20
    Assembly- 5/26/21

Generally when I first see sub results I react with irritation, some curse words, a few choice adjectives about parentage etc. I then go ask the wife if she wants comfort food and I leave and get it. Afterwards I stew for a bit, chill, and come back and see if I missed something :s

I'm viewing it quickly at lunch but I'll make a quick remark on the below four. I could pick more but don't have much time during my break- my opinion of these of course just an "opinion" =

    57 1 49824880 NEAR MINT 7 1976 Topps 270 Willie Stargell Card 9)
    59 1 49824882 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1976 Topps 340 Jim Rice Card (10)
    65 1 49824888 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1976 Topps 242 Dan Meyer Card (10)
    67 1 49824890 NEAR MINT 7 1976 Topps 209 Alan Ashby Card (10)

Fish eyes on a card disqualifies any card from getting a 10. And a 9 most times. Has to be very minor or stick somewhere where it will not detract visually from eye appeal.
Print marks of any type also will cause immediate lowering
Look at the S in Tigers name on Meyer, and on Alan Ashby by his first name. Printing flaws = eye appeal lowering.
Could be more scans don't show.

On the Harper quick note- deeper hues would have brought that up. Merely look at the depth of color and clarity on the Stargell -and compare it to the Harper. Darker green/yellow- I can see that one highly graded.

Opinion only of course--quick viewing during lunch. Those are quality cards and coming from a raw set that looks great- can see why they were subbed.

On another note-- my three May 30th bulk tiers shot from grading to QA1 as did the personal sub below-this sub below is the "latest" dated of the June subs that moved to QA1. Had almost every June 2020 tier and personal bulk have some type of movement. Seems they are attacking Modern June 2020 this week.

Also had movement on some 2021 re-slab special subs as well into Assembly.

Hey Jeff, thanks for you comments. I agree on the fisheye after Stargell's name. I knew that would keep it from a 10 but never imagined it would drop it to a 7. I subbed it because everything else was perfect IMO. As for printing i can find countless examples of 76's and really any 70's or 80's cards that are sitting in 9 holders with printing issues. If I looked I'm betting I could even find some 10's with slight printing imperfections. I'm glad this was just a quick look at lunch from you, because I think you hit on my point with your comment about the Harper. "deeper hues would have brought that up" Brought that up to what ? An 11 ? That is one of the 2 gem mint 10's I got, and why I remain perplexed. When I look at the Harper card in the images vs the Stargell I feel like the colors/gloss are much stronger on the Stargell and it ended up in a 7. To be honest it's just a matter of wanting to understand more so than being upset. When I get the cards in hand I will compare the 2 10's to everything else so I can try and spot what the graders felt were the weaknesses, especially in the Morgan and the Perez because I could find no weaknesses in them and they didn't even 9. It's my personal opinion that standards have changed, and they are being much more picky on big cards and cards of hall of famers. I'd love to see examples of people landing 10's on pre 1980 hall of famer cards. That would ease my mind a little at least.

@76collector yeah understood on wanting to understand grades. It may be my 8 yr old phone but Stargell appears also to have chipping left edge and that eye appeal fish eye. Check that left edge when it comes back.

It is discouraging to say the least that quarterly specials haven't moved. Mine is so old, it is actually a MONTHLY special back then. The fact that it is almost taking a year is really heartbreaking.

I agree and I think if you are a dealer and grading registry/pc cards was your niche, you just stop trying to grade those as the wait, grades returned, grading fees and opportunity cost are all against you actually making money. You're better off selling raw and letting someone else take the beating. This isn't entirely new as I used to know/see dealers that would buy "undergraded" cards and review them and send off the ones they really thought were undergraded and the rest they'd sell raw as "high end examples" that they just hadn't gotten graded yet. And as 76 said, he'd have to sell all the cards to pay the grading fees. That's brutal and I don't think anyone is going to keep doing that long-term.

    Jeff

Those are danged nice cards, my friend. I don't think it's your age; I think it is ever shifting standards.I have been dissappointed with my last 5 subs as the grades came back at least one level lower than expected. A 9 on a '76 is rare. You can forget about a 10 these days. Love those cards though!!!!

That bench is a 9 IMHO. It is beautiful. Nicer than the 10 Harper to me.

    Nice work on this...

...and I especially appreciate your moving CC vouchers to the absolute bottom of the list.

Do you think - if I called you later - that you could also tell me that that’s where’s it’s always been and that it wasn’t ever listed right there with regular turnaround times?

    Thanks!

When PSA CTD reporting appeared on March 1, PSA didn't include CC Vouchers or Reholder categories. Weeks later PSA added them, and they've been at the bottom of my daily update ever since. Interestingly, CC Vouchers and Economy seem to have the same CTD timing.

very could be. i have bulk subs that date back as entered on 9/14/20 that still have not reached the grading phase yet. well over 8 months of dust. of course im not so sure i even want them back until they get outta “just mark it an 8” mode.

notes: this was about right. hit a few big ones w no upcharges. got some player set fillers in here too. only real head scratcher is the kobe tiger. naturally the best card and an 8? rest is pretty spot on. all blue velocitys are oc for the most part. the silvers at the bottom had the rc badge mis-stamp oc a bit. pretty normal for the issue. some slide thru as 10s, some get pegged w 9s. so cant really complain or expect those to have 10’d. all in all, doesnt feel like a loss at least. they are still on my **** list for now.

Hi all, newbie here. I am also new to PSA. I submitted my first order of 100 cards in January. They show them arrived as of 02/23/2021 and entered as 04/02/2021. I have been following the "Complete Through Date" chart and thought maybe I was missing something so I joined here to read up.

Based on what I am reading (and seeing for myself) the CTD for Value-Modern. it seems to stay on one date conservatively for at least 4 days. By that math, and my entered date I should receive my cards back in 2.7 years from today. Am I missing something? Turn-around time when I submitted was like 5 months.

My packs arrived 10/13 but weren’t logged until 1/14 - do you think that means I’m a few weeks away, or a few months away? I know you don’t have a crystal ball, but just curious if “subbed” in your statement aligns more closely with “arrived” or “entered”... Thanks either way for the info.

if i had to guess, you will probably be in 2 months time.

it's looking like this batch was for packs actually logged by 11/15ish time period.

grote will probably give you a little better insight into how often psa sends bbce the packs and when.

eta: actually, i might push my guesstimate out another month. your log date is right on the bubble of that first massive influx they talked about after the first price increase, i think.

if you follow or read the thread, especially the last couple of pages, you really dont want them anywhere near the grading table right now.
