Well, it’s been a little slow for me with the holidays, and I probably should’ve let the price drop back down a bit...but this was at the LCS, he always sells to me between melt to melt +$1/oz...so I picked this up...first acquisition of the year

Thanks so much for thinking of me @ShadyDave. Kalamazoo is my hometown and I try to buy any interesting piece of history that I can find. Wortley wasn’t quite prominent and Main and Burdick would have been right dead in the middle of town. These spoons are quite common and full sets in pristine condition show up and sell for about $200. Probably not something in this condition that I would buy but awesome piece of local (to me) history.

Another one today
Bought this gold filled pocket watch today for $50 at a pawn shop.
It runs really well and keeps time. Seems like it was just serviced.

The exciting part is that after I got home I was looking at the chain it was attached to and it looks like solid gold! I acid tested it and it is indeed 10k solid gold . 3.2g. of 10k so $66 scrap.

@asheland... I like the Scottsdale Mint, and have a couple of their products... a .45 cartridge, the Lions Head... and a Skull....I go out to Scottsdale to visit a buddy each year... and always forget to stop in their facility...Will make a note for next year. Cheers, RickO

I recently came across these photos and was reliving the experiences in my mind. From the hikes into the area and first realizing what I was onto and how it was an awesome footnote to everything else happening in life then. Each one of these pans shows a cleanup from one 8-10 hours of placer mining to physical exhaustion a very special plunge pool. It's always nice to see gold in your box before you even clean it out. Obsessed, I worked that hole for about a year until I was convinced I did what I could and it gave me what it wanted and moved on. I have yet to find another as packed or as exposed to the surface and reachable without heavy equipment.

I typically don't "pan" other than to prospect samples and clean up. It's said, no mater how big the operation, it starts and ends with a pan. Still, it takes about 5 min to work a pan right to produce a spec (if the gold is there) so I prefer to shovel directly into a sleuce box which can run about 400 pans an hour, so the specs actual add up over a day.

I had been running like this for a season, just shoveling directly into my sleuce getting around 2-3 grams a day and happy with that for a serene summer day workout. One day I brought a mask and snorkel...........

I could literally see gold packed in the fine cracks in the bedrock and used some tweezers to pull out some pickers. My strategy changed instantly. I contacted Keene engineering and spoke with them about some custom equipment for my application. I asked if it bothered them that I only wanted to buy half of one of their kits and would retro fit my gear. The owner said, "Heck no! It's guys like you that invented all the stuff." I ordered a small engine with turbo that was backpackable and some small 2.5 inch suction hose and welded up a custom inlet to my sleuce box that sets on the bank of the pool. This is all small stuff and can be hiked into a canyon in two trips.

I would set this all up and jump in the pool and just shovel off the gravel that I had formerly been running! After an hour of clearing I would be down to bed rock, I would pound out the cracks with a spud bar and then vacuums up the seam. Nothing like being underwater watching gold get sucked up. One day I could hear the pitch of the prybar hitting rock change...ping, Ping, PING sound under water getting just a little higher in pitch each time I hit it. I knew I had a large slab coming loose. I got ready and when I pulled the rock aside, there it was! The fabled seam I knew was there all along. It looked like an ant farm of little pieces of gold stacked up a foot long. Now you can bring the suction nose up slowly and silt gets pulled off first and the gold lays back. Beautiful sight. I was so pumped and so satisfying watching it all get sucked up.

I don't get out like I used to. I only go when the conditions are perfect, haha. Not like the day when I would go in icy water. I'm onto other mineral chases, but pretty pleased this happened at all.
