There is some golden phrasing around here. For posterity I will record some here. Stuff that rings true as a silver half, is insightful and succinct, or comical.

Jon said something about how he never gambles in a casino, but will "gamble" on a coin.

I am a poker player (gambler) and a coin dealer so I really liked that one. I don't think I have gone to a casino since I read that. I have gambled on numerous coins since then, however.

"Mind your business" on the Fugio Cents did not have the modern meaning. The phrase, which came from Benjamin Franklin, met “work hard at your business or occupation and succeed.”

The Fugio Cents were struck on a device called a drop press. As the name implies, it is a press when the striking die is raised above the anvil die and dropped on the planchet. If you would like to see a drop press in action, go to the Universal Orlando theme park and check out one of the shops in the Islands of Adventure, Atlantis area. If you are walking toward the Harry Potter area there is a side street on the right where a token maker strikes pieces to order with a number of different dies. He is using a drop press.

Here are my two Fugio Cents. This first one is Newman variety 8-X, which was part of the Bank of New York hoard. There may have been several thousand Mint State coins in this group when it began as apart of the assets of the Bank of New York. Over the years, the bank gave them out to favored customers. By the time collectors got a chance to run through it in the late 1940s, there were about 1,200 coins left. This coin is a Mint State piece with the usual planchet fissures.

Here is my second piece, the more common of the two Club Rays variety pieces. This coin is quite a bit scarcer than the previous one. NGC graded this one VF-35 years ago.

The Numismatic Crime Information Center (NCIC) was established in 1986 to coordinate and collaborate initiatives between law enforcement and the numismatic community in “Targeting Numismatic Crimes Around the World”. NCIC is devoted exclusively to assist law enforcement and victims during the investigation of numismatic crimes and to provide the necessary tools and resources to effectively investigate the complex challenges encountered during these types of investigations.

NCIC provides technical assistance to law enforcement and focuses on the identification, apprehension and prosecution of individual suspects and Organized Crime Groups who target and prey on the numismatic community.

Help NCIC continue to better serve the numismatic and law enforcement community. NCIC maintains a website, crime database, conducts accredited law enforcement training programs and issues crime alert bulletins to over 8,000 members. The bulletins provide a valuable networking capability and keeps law enforcement and the numismatic community informed of on-going criminal activity and conduct.

Your financial support will allow NCIC to continue providing these services at no cost to law enforcement and the numismatic community. Tax deductible donations can be sent to NCIC P.O. Box 14080 Arlington, Texas 76094 or via PayPal at www.numismaticcrimes.org.

The ultimate goal is to better equip law enforcement and the numismatic community with knowledge and information on these crimes that leave victims devastated, emotionally traumatized and with large financial losses.

May I make a suggestion, look for errors in Brand new rolls of coins, you will find them.

Looking for errors in circulation seems to be confusing you.

Start with brand new coins and look for the different die states and die traits. You will learn a lot.

    This is good advice.
Learn what a "new" coin look like.
Then compare it to your example above.
    ----- Your coin is corroded
----- Your coin has beat up rims
    ----- Your coin is scratched

A crude example would be this: You see a smashed up car on the side of the road. You ask yourself "Was it made this way or did this happen after it left the assembly line?"
The coins you have been posting are obviously "crashed cars".

Look through a loupe and learn to tell the difference between displaced metal (a scratch) and a raised line (die scratch or gouge, This is a critical difference.
Take the time you are currently using to photograph damaged coins and learn about the minting process...and ask yourself "Could this have happened at the mint?' or "Did this happen after the coin has entered commerce?"

Regarding aimless error coin searching in spare change and circulating coins

Years ago, I recall that a forum member submitted a group of wildly toned Washies for grading; most were rejected as QT. He posted his lamentation here, wondering if submitting the group was wise or if he should have dribbled them in one or 2 at a time.

For newer, common coins easy to find nice, coins must have both full strike and outstanding surfaces. Either way, coin must elicit a Wow!

What is the definition of a "so0called dollar"?

I'm not sure there's an official definition since the term was coined by Thomas Elder and he didn't provide one. He used the term to refer to a medal from the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, aka St. Louis World's Fair. People generally use the definition mentioned in the first edition of the reference published by Charles V. Kappen and Harold E. Hibler about 50 years later, but the authors noted they limited their work due to effort and also made many exceptions. The pieces in the reference are assigned a "HK" number and those are generally acknowledged as So-Called Dollars. The pieces which fit the definition that haven't been cataloged, generally known as "Unlisted So-Called Dollars". Due to limited resources, the H&K numbers aren't being added to aggressively right now, though the H&K reference copyright owners and NGC are doing so when they can. Jeff Shevlin and Bill Hyder are cataloging more pieces with their own SH numbers and published a reference this year.

Here's the definition in the H&K first edition:

This present work is restricted to medals of an exposition, commemorative, monetary and kindred nature. ...From the beginning, however, it was necessary to establish the following specific limitations in order to contain our efforts within a manageable perimeter:

    • United States only.
    • Minimum diameter - Size 21 (1-5/16 inch or 33mm).
    • Maximum diameter - Size 28 (1-3/4 inch or 45mm); but silver Bryan Dollars are listed.
    • No holed or looped material unless struck plain also. Our Nos. 1 to HK-3 are the sole exceptions.
