Thanks for letting us know... I am now quite sick to my stomach.
Didn't see the coin being listed - although I was walking the dogs
at 5:30 ... I fell back asleep later on until 8:30.

I think I now need another lie-down.

Edit: After the shock of missing out on the 09-O, I forgot to
say how much I like your 97-O, Vern. Love the toning !!

Fair value with respect to the comps in the set with those pops in AU.
It's funny to watch a market coalesce around something like this in a 8-10 year slice of time.
Like the 04s Half had done as well.

Sure did. I remember six or seven years back there were two low MS (but very nice for the grade) 1909-O quarters being sold. I was actually tempted to buy the MS coin, break it out, and wear down the grade slightly to AU58 for the big price jump.

Nowadays, AU55's and MS62-64 are the go to grades for me. The AU58 craze has gone bonkers.

I still think the seller could have gotten a LOT more for that 09-O, especially considering eBay and PayPal fees. That's doesn't mean that I think the coin is worth more than the buyer paid, but the market for AU 09-O quarters is much higher, deservedly or not. Interesting topic to debate!

Paesan, et al:

This particular 09-O was the only 09-O in PCGS 58 that I had not seen.
With a low pop of only three coins in 58, the last one to get a 58 was
"Our's" {PAESAN & Labelman87.} I know what the other AU 58 looks like,
and I believe it is in strong hands.

My "eyes" { my YN friend, Valente151} says the ebay AU 58 coin was
messed with and I missed a bullet. Regarding the price, selling that coin
for $5,200 was a fair price. Consider the one at Teaparty for $7500.
Granted, I am sure Liz/ Gail dropped the price a little, but it was a consigned
coin ( am I correct in assuming that ? ) and they wouldn't budge too much.
Missing the bullet or not, I would have hit the buy it now button anyway.

Dennis - That 09-O looked dipped/re-toned to me. Your AU-55, now in Doug's collection is still my favorite AU '09-O.

Tyler - Here is one of those MS 09-O's you mentioned. Now in Paesan's Stash, PC61 (and undergraded IMO).

Vern, Owning and (having owned) a few 09-O Quarters, IMO Paesan's PC61 is a terrific coin. ...As always, a nice image too!

Thanks, Craig. I've been very fortunate to be the curator of some special 09-O quarters. I sent the 61 for an upgrade when I used to throw money at our host, but it came back 61. I grade 63+, and it's only a dip away from a 64! He-he-he.

I've seen scarier bullets than that 09-O 58.

Here is a half that I really liked. The look in hand is so cool. I believe Lenny currently owns this coin.

This coin is one of my favorites...

I have been admiring the 1897-O Quarter - what a great looking coin.... here is the one from my current set...

.....and, here is the one from my former set...

Doug's 93-O & 93-S are beauties as well....

Here's my old 93-S... still looking for the one I have today...

I realized that one of my coins in my Quarter set was in my previous collection - and I repurchased it when I found it -
but because its in my All Time Finest Set - I can not register it.

Here is my old & current 1915-S

I found this pristine looking white coin the other day - and it still needs to be professionally imaged...

Mike - Wonderful group of coins (especially the 97-O in 58 which I bought at your 2011 auction).

I had an interesting bit of business with Stacks/Bowers this week, which I put in a seperate thread. It sounds like everything will work out thanks to Brian Kendrella, and this coin will soon be replaced in my collection, PC53:

The thread is slipping down- time for a post. I received a NGC MS 61 1893 S in the mail today:

The coin is very attractive, but I believe NGC missed the mark on this one. Enlarged I can see definite signs of wear- I don't know if it's detectable in these photos or not. I'm sending it in to PCGS for crossing, setting a 58 as acceptable. I hope it comes through for me!

Another raw pickup that arrived in the mail today, a 1902 O Half:

The coin hasn't been messed with- the surfaces look original. Unfortunately, however, the obverse has a scratch in a spot that's not immediately obvious. Is it obscure enough to allow the coin to grade? I hope so......... Off to PCGS.

Jeff,

Don't get your hopes up... I think the coin will get a Genuine holder
...with a damaged code. Those parallel scratches on the upper OBV
are enough to keep it out of a numbered grade. JMHO.

Paesan - NTT not coming to me (yet). NTM must be one of my favs, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". Jack is great.

Jeff - Rev of your 93-S looks MS to me, obv might get you the 58 tho. I think it's luck of the draw on the 02-O. I've seen much worse scratches on coins in graded holders. Good luck.

Jeff, Your 93-S is my favorite coin that you have posted so far. Why try to downgrade it? If it comes back 61 and you don't want it, I may know the perfect place to STASH it!

Vern, Jack is great and what a movie! BTW both those 93-S halves are long gone, but the memory remains!

Aside that it doesn't look like a MS coin to me (and I like coins in the proper holder), I want a 58 for the Registry set. A 61 isn't very thrilling, but a 58 is. Maybe it will 58+ (kidding)! I do like the look of the coin, so I'll likely keep it no matter.

I bought a Barber Dime!!!

A 1899 ANACS AU 50:

Even though it's a common date I liked the way this coin looked. I cracked it out and sent it off to our hosts for grading; I think it's a AU 53.

No one's posting today- I'll fill some band width. A new 1892 O 50C arrived in the mail today in an ANACS AU 55 holder; I had to crack it out:

I'm hoping it will come back as a 55; I thought it had a better chance raw. It's an easy 53, and hopefully a 55.

Lenny sure has some great original looking coins!

The latest addition to my team; a 1902 O Half-PCGS AU 58:

Although the strike isn't great, it's rather average for Now Orleans. This coin replaces an AU 50 in my set; I found this a much tougher date than PCGS seems to think.

Your coin is the answer to Question Number One on (my) the ANA Barber Final Exam:
Which Date and Mint is the the worst struck of the Half Dollars ?

I bring a few examples of this date/mm with me for discussion.

Some credit is given for other guesses - but the 02-O is hands down the worst
struck of any reverse (consistently) of any other Half I have seen.

Your's is nicer than the average.

Thanks for the insight; now I feel a little better about the coin.

I still find it strange how PCGS prices this coin lower than most other 58's. For example, they price the '02 O at $750 (Pop Count 14, Registry Weight 5), but the '02 is priced at $850 (Pop Count 42, Registry Weight 2). Is this just a typo, or does someone really believe the '02 O is a less valuable coin?

Paesan - I should have gotten that NTT, I've only heard it about a 100 times, her **** a shakin.
