Don - You've really sparked the thread. Many great looking halves being presented.

Justin - I'll pass along your wishes to Keith on his 05-O.

    Mike

I have not had my coins trueviewed. Rumor has it from a reliable source that a set is about to be published that will become the new #1 set. He is still trying to acquire the last coin he needs to complete a 58 set!

Wow! What a lot of nice 05-O's! Maybe they are not rare after all! image
  • paesanpaesan Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭✭✭
Don, Welcome back to the thread, and I love your 06-S!

Vern, Not Batman. Think of the guy who is the king of one-liners in Hollywood. Couple of sweet 05-O halves!

Scott, I know you're out there. Thanks for the 08 that Vern posted.

    Hints tomorrow.

NTT- The Kinks- Celluloid Heroes (I think).

Darrell- You know darn well the '05 O is darn tough. When do we get to see a photo of your 58? I'm sure it's quite stunning!

    I love them Barber Halves.....
  • JeffMTampaJeffMTampa Posts: 3,278 ✭✭✭✭✭
NTM- does it star Arnold and Danny? Back from the '80's?

Does this tie into Barbers in any way?
    I love them Barber Halves.....

Justin - I neglected to mention yesterday how great your halves look. Especially the 05-O.

Paesan - When I think of the king of one liners, I think of Henny Youngman, but I'm sure that just shows my age and he wasn't Hollywood. So, I'll have to wait for more clues, unless Jeff is right.

Darrell - Another set besides Don Willis's?

Pics for this AM, really nice raw dime from Keith's collection:

Jeff, You nailed them both, and yes, it has something to do with Barbers. Everything in life is intertwined. (And it makes me happy, and I like Barbers)

Keith, Very attractive 1900-S dime! Perfect look. Good match to my 00-S half on previous page.

Vern... I remember Jim buying the 01-S .... Wasn't it in an NGC 55 holder before ?
It was only a few months back, I seem to have forgotten the details. Regardless,
    that's one sweet 01-S Quarter !! Congrats Jim !!

I need to get on Photobucket on the lap top and post a couple of Nickels I added
(so much for taking it easy ...lol )

All beautiful coins, Mike. I think I like the look of the NGC 5C the best, but they're all amazing. imageimage

Mike - I believe Jim's 01-S was in an NGC-50, and was upgraded to PC53. That's pretty unusual in itself.
Very nice additions by the way, and your '01 half has about as beautiful album toning as is possible.

<< <i>Thanks for sharing your story, Don. I have heard your name from quite a few people when they hear I collect VF Barbers. Even a circ commem guy mentioned your name to me once. All speak very highly of your taste in mid grade halves.

As Mike stated above, I bought his last 05-O. I bought it in 2013 from him, but it took two years of constant hounding. It's my favorite half.

    image

And here's a few others that I really like as well.

    imageimage

    imageimage

And I always enjoyed this glamour shot.

    image

Vern - Tell Keith, if he ever gets tired of that 05-O, it has a home in PA. >>

Finally was able to get the thread to load after MFH taught be about the customize bar! My how the tables have turned when Mike didn't know how to post a photo image

LogPotato - your name came out of the hat (only 3 entries), so I'll PM you re: the quarterlies

And those Barbers including the 'glamor shot' -- image

My latest pickup- a 1911 Half PCGS AU 58:

    image

    image

This replaces a PC 55 in my set; it was obtained at a very reasonable price. Not the best toning, but not a bad coin either.

Don... Just goes to show you, even an old dog can learn a new trick.
Getting a photobucket account ( first it was free - but limited in volume -
now it's on a charge basis, but very reasonable !!)

I agree, that 01-O Half from Keith is really nice. As Justin mentioned, the
guy's got good taste. Seeing raw Halves like that reminds me of my Dansco
collection from 10 years ago. In a way, I am sorry I had the coins certified
    and eventually sold them off.

"Not that long ago" - the term is relative - I picked up a complete set of Waite Raymond
raw albums from a collector friend; I have always thought it would be fun to start
yet another raw set - but - in mid range AU condition - after seeing Jeff's luck, I very
well may try one of the sets. My raw Dime set in a Dansco album was great fun, so,
if I do start yet another raw set, it will definitely be another Dime collection.

I added another Dime to my Certified collection - an upgrade - of a 1912-S in an OGH
PCGS 64. Thanks to "my youthful set of eyes", Valente151, the coin will be sent to CAC.

    imageimage

My previous 12-S is an AU 58 - which was in my Certified Dime Collection that sold in 8/2011. When I saw
my old coin on Great Collections, I had to buy it back, especially for less than I sold it for !!
The only problem with buying this coin back, it once belonged to my "All Time Finest Collection"
and was unable to be included in this collection.

    image

My other (3rd) 1912-S is an error coin, and is 20% stuck off center - and is graded PCGS 50.

    image

Another gorgeous weekend here in SW Florida. Mid to high 80's and no humidity. Bright blue
skies and not a cloud in sight .... The afternoon Gulf Breezes start around 4:00 - and that's when
the puppies and I go to the Dog Park. There are lots of shade trees and water fountains for the
dogs - and a bubbler for us non canines - there are lots of benches under the trees - and under
the pavilion ( which has air moving fans ) .

Have a great weekend, everyone ! Happy Hunting !!

    EDIT:

    Jeff - Nice 1911- P Half - as nice a 58 as there is out there !!

I love that off center dime, Mike! I don't understand the logic of why you can't enter the 58 dime into your set, especially considering you sold it after it was entered into a retired set. Sometimes life just isn't fair......

Jeff - Congrats on the '11 upgrade.

Mike - Great trifecta of 12-S's. Congrats on the newp 64.
I hope you decide to use your Raymond boards, they really add to the fun of collecting IMO.

And with the mention of Raymond boards, I can't resist posting my raw set again, pics not the best but they look great in hand. And while I'm at it, I'll throw in a couple of raw selections.

Vern...always a pleasure seeing your Quarter collection. Thanks for sharing it.

    EDIT :

My old raw set - now all certified - and most in JMW's set of Barber Dimes...

My mistake... The images looked like my old set... Need to dig up the correct ones !!

I hope these are from my old set - Photobucket organization is a real mess....PLUS : The Images are too small.
I'll try and locate the larger images !!

    imageimage

Missing coins were certified - and didn't want to crack out all the key dates [ ie: 1895-O in PCGS 58 ]

Vern- always nice to have some pics to look at, thanks for posting them. I'll see you at the Central States next month, I plan to really work hard on my Vf raw Barber set, and as always look around for some PCGS xf coins that might fit my set. I plan to bring my1912-D NGC XF-45 and hope to negotiate a deal for a PCGS 1912-D if not I guess I'll keep it.
I also need to work a little on my Indian Cent varieties, but I'm sure I'll be tied up with the Barbers most of the time, look forward to seeing you there.

Thank goodness I don't collect this crap anymore!
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.

There's been a slowdown in postings on the thread recently; I'll post a few recent raw quarter pickups this weekend. First up a 1892 Type 1 REV:

    image

    image

I'm a bit surprised that the basic set doesn't include both the Type 1 & 2 Reverses, but very surprised that PCGS doesn't even recognize it as a variety attribute. I'll be sending it off to our hosts for grading in a few weeks.

I could use some advice from all you expert graders on this thread. Three of the Barber Halves in my set look like they are under graded to me (by one grade). I'm considering submitting one or more of these to PCGS to see if I can get an upgrade. I could use your opinions to help me decide if it's worth spending the $$ or not.

    First, a 1900 O currently in a PCGS AU 50 holder:

    image

    image

    Next, a 1901 O currently in a PCGS AU 53 holder:

    image

    image

    And last, a 1901 S currently in a PCGS AU 50 holder:

    image

    image

They're all tough dates. What do you think the odds are that any of these will upgrade?

    Double post- ignore this!
    I love them Barber Halves.....
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

    Jeff,

My initial reaction is that the 1900-O might have a chance of upgrading to a 53
but there is a lot of chatter on the obverse fields, which may be why they held
the grade down. It's a nice coin.

The 1901-O in AU 53 is spot on. No more or no less. Very nice coin.

The 1901-S is an AU 50. It's a major stretch to bump it. I'd leave it alone. Another nice one.

Thanks for your opinions Mike- you're the resident expert here. I'll likely just leave them all alone as-is. After all, the coin won't be getting any nicer- it would just be new plastic. image

3 great coins there. All where they should be imo.
In fact the 01o has a 50% chance of coming back a 50. It is delicious. Best coin in the series in that AU.
    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
