UHR - Your '99-S is a real toughie, thanks for posting.

Mike - That's way better than a hole filler. Perfect looking 14-S.

FTB - Perhaps the single best purchase of the year. Nice coin, unheard of price. Congrats.

    Lenny-

What did you update in your Half set? Please share!

NTT Grateful Dead- Sugar Magnolia. I know a few of them.

Paesan - Didn't know the Dead selection, and drawing a blank on the NTM. Maybe brain will function tomorrow.

Doug, Congrats on your beautiful 1910.

Jeff, Sugar Magnolia is correct. You're good at this. Did I mention a half update? I don't remember. Recent newps include a perfect 1921-S VF-20 from DKRC with a tip from Justin, a perfect 1900-S in 53 which will replace my 1900-S in 55 that is also quite appealing, an 1807 VG-10, 66-S and 72-S in 40. I've been busy! :-) (Would it surprise anyone that the one with the lowest pops was the cheapest and the one with the highest pops was the most expensive?)

When Jeff asked about what was "updated" .... He was referring to
what your set was highlighted as, UPDATED.

Usually if there is an Upgrade, ie a 53 going to a 55, the actual set
has a seperate column showing the Upgrade.

Conversely, if you Down grade from a 55 to a 53, it will also be listed
    but as a Update.

Your set had no such wording on the set itself, it showed an Update
on the master list of Barber Halves, but not in the set itself.

Usually, that means the update was in the recent past, but not the
    immediate past.

For the sake of discussion, I'd like to see the perfect 53 and compare
it to the AU 55 it replaced. The longer I collect this series, the more I
    appreciate the AU 53 grade.

Yes, Lenny, you've been a busy guy.

What a find Verne! From your pictures I would be anywhere from 45-53 depending on the mood of the graders.

After viewing it on my computer and not my phone, I agree with Darrell.
  • JeffMTampaJeffMTampa Posts: 3,278 ✭✭✭✭✭
What a great raw find and a great looking one at that. I think it will likely return in a 50 holder, but it has a good shot at 53. Lucky you! image

Very nice 07-S. Although I agree with Darrell in principal,
I'd be disappointed if the coin graded less than AU 50.

If it grades 45, I'll take it off your hands....image

After looking at Mike Hayes beautiful collection of Liberty Nickels I decided to venture out and pick up a few myself.

    First a 1903:

    image

    Next a 1905:

    image

    image

    A 1906:

And finally a pair of 1911's (I couldn't decide which one I liked better):

    image

    image

    image

    image

They all look like mid grade MS coins to me (63 to 64), but I don't know much about grading these. They're all common dates, but they sure are nice looking coins in MS state. Thanks Mike for getting me interested! image

Would like some thoughts from the half dollar experts on the 1910 (P).
Overrated/overvalued? Underrated/undervalued? Common or tough? More specifically in XF-AU problem free holder.

NTM hint: (it's not really a bird he's talking about catching)

I find the 1910 in VF-AU to be nearly as tough as it's later sibblings the 13,14,+15!

The '10 half is definitely tough, but I don't think it's quite as difficult to find a nice reasonably priced XF to AU as the '13, '14, and '15. For me the '11 S has been tougher as well.

NTM- The hint locked me in (I think)- is it "Jaws"? image

Darrell, Thanks for your opinion. I think it's pretty tough too, but my knowledge is limited here.

Jeff, Nice nickels to start off your collection, and good pickup on your raw 11-S half. I like the 03 nickel the best. Mike's nickels are quite inspirational. Jaws is correct! What a great movie!

Another nice group of coins, Jeff.

    Re: V Nickel Set:

My set was started by my Grandfather
and I have added to it since 1989. I
finally completed the set in 1994.

All but one coin was graded as AU 58.
One was a MS 63 - how my Grandfather
ever found that one in MS is beyond me.

I have had a lot of fun putting together this
set, a few too many MS coins have snuck in,
as I would much rather have all 58's.

Jeff - Nice group of nickels and 11-S. And good job on the NTM.

Paesan - I'm not a half guy but I'll guess the '10 half is about as tough as any late P mints in higher circ grades.
NTM, I kept thinking of the bird as a woman, not a shark. Robert Shaw was great.

The Half series has more semi key dates than many realize.
The 11-S is very hard to locate in 40-53. I located a nice 45
from Scott. Equally difficult is the 13-P which I picked up another
choice XF but from Chris Dudzik ( Manorcourtman). The 05-O is
well known to be an absolute bear in XF (without problems ).

I am down to a 1897-O in 40-53 to finish off my set - then I will
fine tune it.... actively look for crusty originals and weed out the
    dipped ones.

Jeff.... Your 1905 "V" nickel has PMD at 12 O'Clock @ the Reverse.
All the others look pretty nice - actually nicer than most of mine !!

I looked at the '11 S half again today (that I posted yesterday), this time with a more objective viewpoint. I now believe it's been messed with; I'll be returning it. Rats- I thought I found another tough one. For now I'll keep my XF 45.

Mike, I saw the damage (likely a counting machine); I doubt it would grade but it's still a nice looking coin.

By the way Mike, you're not the only one looking for a nice '97 O Half. My VF 25 looks way out of place in my set! I sure wish I knew where they were hiding; the pop report doesn't have the coin as tough as other dates.

I was able to pick up a nice upgrade for my Dime Collection.
Although I have a 1895-S Dime in PCGS 58, I thought the MS
62 in tonight's Heritage auction better suited my collection.

    image
    image

I also won another upgrade - an 1898 Dime PCGS 64

The nice '15 S you already have is a nice Barber Half (albeit a common date). I don't think anyone will want to traded a rarer MS coin for a common date, but perhaps I'm missing something?

    Vern,

Very attractive 1915 ... I love it for a 53 .... and as Jeff mentioned, it might slide into an AU 55 on a regrade.
But, to me, it's the epitome 53. { I have had a decent set of Walkers from time to time, but sold the last set
    to fund the Barber set. That was a really nice 20-S .}

Nothing new - per se - all I have to add is that CAC has received my recent submission. The majority of this
group belongs to my friend SROTAG - I finally got back a 10 Coin Submission (*) from our hosts - and I have
been accumulating odds and ends of his before I put a package together. I had bought another 15-S Quarter
in PCGS 58 which I included in the submission. ( the previous one I have in the set can't be added to my sets
because it was included in my all time finest set ) so much for buying back an old coin of yours. That's okay,
I bought it from a collector in Vermont to whom I have sold many coins to before ( he bought the lion's share
of Criag's AU Quarters that I had with me at FUN a couple of years ago. ) I hope he thinks of me when he decides
to resell. I found the new 15-S on eBay as a BIN. ....( Craig is on vacation for a few weeks and won't be reading
    this for awhile.....) { Hi Ya Craig... Sunburnt yet ? }

    (*) I posted these ten coin's TruView images recently. { 4 Dimes and 6 Halves }

<< <i>Another raw pickup that arrived in the mail today, a 1902 O Half:

    image

    image

The coin hasn't been messed with- the surfaces look original. Unfortunately, however, the obverse has a scratch in a spot that's not immediately obvious. Is it obscure enough to allow the coin to grade? I hope so......... Off to PCGS. >>

Grades just came back on this one- it's now in a PCGS 55 holder. From what I've observed if a scratch in a non focal point area of the coin is old and toned over they'll let it go. If the scratch is new on a toned coin it will get bagged. When I bought this I thought it might become part of my set (I think it's a nice looking coin), but since I recently purchased an AU 58 this one will go up for sale.

Hate the game, not the player.
