Boosibri - Pretty sweet coin to find in Germany. Although I remember a thread recently where you stated Barbers a common to find in Europe. Which isn't all that hard to believe given the immigration of the time period.
Jeff - Knowing you like 58's, it's hard not to choose that. But I say 62.
First hint- it is either an AU or an MS; Mike nailed that! >>
Ok... Now that I have looked at it with a quizzical eye, the top feather of the Left Facing side of the Eagle shows a trace of wear... More so than an AU 58 might have (IMHO) .... so, I'm adjusting my "stab" guess to AU 55, from my original guess of (other than AU/MS ) of MS 63.
I have always thought Darrell was overly conservative with images - but he got me to rethink my Stab Guess. I still like the coin, however.
PAESAN, Based on the images of the 12-D Half, I disagree with the grade NGC placed on that coin ( as attractive as it may be ). Far too much wear/rub on the left facing top feather. It's a 55, IMHO
LogPotato,
I agree with your assessment, many contemporary coins were sent to Germany during the time period that the Barber design was in production. It seems as though this area of Europe produced more farmers ( and what farmer isn't a hard worker ?) who could have afforded to send back to the Vaterland a souvenir .... I myself have an 1852-O Half Dime that my Dad found in Germany inside a desk in his command post during WW-II. Nice pick up Boosibri.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
As you likely figured out I only post Guess the Grade when it's a tough one. It's tough to say if there's any real wear on this coin or not. The listing photos looked like there might be a little wear; I think mine do as well. I bought the coin thinking it might be a potential 58 crackout, but seeing the coin in hand tells me it's a 62.
Vern & Logpotato, congrats on properly grading the coin!
Vern, great pics sorry I couldn't make the Central States as usual things came up.
I need a little help from the slab experts. I bought this coin below in a PCGS AU 55 holder, I really like the looks of the coin in hand but there is some damage to reverse side of the holder. It looks as if it were ground out but I see no other damage and the coin does not appear to be tampered with. Could this be something that happened while it was being sealed, has anyone ever seen this before.
Based on how these fragile pieces of plastic are treated by collectors and dealers alike I am surprised there isn't more damage to the holders. The thin "fin like" edge of the PCGS holder takes a lot of damage if it's mishandled. You're lucky the seller is replacing the holder for you.
I sent some coins in for Regrade before I sold them off in August 2011 and most were sent to CAC ... One coin did not hit my reserve - [ a 1901 Half in PCGS MS 64+ and was returned to me but with the addition of a one inch scratch on the holder ] and one of the disturbing things is, the holder was brand new - the coin was CAC'D - the coin was imaged in the Heritage Auction with the scratch. It looked as if the scratch could've been on the coin ... possibly why it did not sell. Regardless, I had the coin reholdered and reCac'd ... now, it's one of my favorite Barbers. I may never sell it now. That scratch cost me close to $100 with fees and insurance.
As I said, people don't treat slabs gently... No one pays any attention to the fact that the holder is pristine or scuffed up.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Mike- I agree about the holders getting scuffed up. It seems every coin I buy in a holder is full of scuff marks partially obscuring the coin. Even coins in the new type PCGS holders (15 months old or less) arrive all scuffed up. I need to spend a bunch of time with each 2nd hand slab I receive polishing the holder to remove the scuffs so I can photograph it. In fact, in my last returned submission from PCGS I received c=a coin back in a holder that was all scuffed up. Aren't they supposed to have a QA process to prevent this?
Another new purchase, this time a raw 1900 50C:
It looks like a MS 61 in my opinion; any other thoughts? I'll be sending it off to PCGS for grading in a week or two.
Dave...I have seen quite a few slabs with the top corner knocked out like that. I attribute it to dealers with fat fingers so it is easier to get a coin out of the box!
Mike, The 12-D half has the wear of a 55, I agree, but the eye appeal of a nice 58 (better in hand) and the price of an XF. Probably headed for the consignor because not worth cross dollars.
Vern, Sorry to hear that Barber Quarters were scarce at the show. I was also scratching my head with the 14-S. The thing that stood out most was the different way that the coin looked in the two sets of images that Heritage provided. My best 14-S is an XF-40. I've owned one AU that wasn't very nice.
Srotag, Congrats on your fine acquisitions!
Jeff, I grade your 15 as a 62. :-) and I wouldn't mess with it.
No new Barbers for me, but lots of nice seated stuff off Heritage.
Here are a couple of old newps [ I used to own them eons ago ] and now, they are scheduled for my nephew's collection... I just grabbed these off of Heritage last night's Internet Only auction...
This coin also came out of my Dansco album back in 2008 or so...
I bought this raw back in 1994... sent it to ANACS - where it received a MS 61.... years later, I sent it to PCGS where it graded MS 62 and the subsequent owner sent it to CAC....
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
I thought you Barber crazies might enjoy a photo of a new acquisition. As has been mentioned here (I'm a closet Barber lurker) a tremendous collection of Barber Dimes sold at Central States. While not exactly in the league of the beautiful 99-O or 01-S coins posted previously, this one has certain merits.
Dave - Was sorry to miss you at Central States. Hope you're feeling ok. Interesting about the damage on the slabs. I'm thinking it was unintentionally done in the mfg process.
Jeff - You keep the newps rolling in.
Mike - Congrats on the two reacquisitions. Wonderful toning.
Bryce - Great acquisition, congratulations. Interesting the difference in the two sets of pics. I'm guessing yours are more accurate.
Pics for this AM, newp for my friend Dan from the Lily Nicole collection. My pics weren't able to do this beauty justice.
Vern l It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
Vern- I guess the next show will be the ANA Worlds Fair of Money in Chicago, sure hope to make that one. Did you find anything to your liking at the show?
My wife is brilliant. This morning, as per my usual routine, I dropped off my older daughter at high school and then swung by post office to pick up mail before heading home and getting breakfast ready for my wife and little one. While at the breakfast table, she noticed that I was ogling my latest acquisition which is an undergraded, flashy frosty 1884-S Morgan in the wrong holder. So she says, "Maybe I'll send myself to SPGS (sic) and get myself put in plastic so you'll pay attention to me!"
I was going to say something cute like ...your wife doesn't look any older than VF 35.....
Jeff's comment about being unclean, though ....
Hey, Paesan... I'd take her comment to heart....no more ogling newps at the breakfast table....
News for the day... No newps... LOL
I sent in six NGC graded coins to my new set of eyes ( Valente151)(Mike) in Orlando, and he cracked them out for me and is submitting them from there.
This Quarter and Dime have also been submitted raw....
Okay....here's a recent Nickel purchase. How would you grade this one ?
Two of the coins wouldn't cross before ( a few years ago ) - so - those were sent in the NGC holders... All others were cracked out.
I only have this one Dime to show for the moment. The other is a 1902-P that was out of the Dansco. Keeping my fingers crossed.... Mike's opinion is highly valued and he loved the coins and thought most if not all would cross or grade at the levels I want.
We are both on the fence on one coin...an 1896 Dime in NGC 55.... which has the nicest rim toning you could ever hope for. He and I discussed the color progression and there is a jump in color not normally found.
Once he sends me the images, I'll post them... Because we all know .... "this post is useless without pitchers" !!

A new set has been listed in the Barber Half Everyman's set, the
<< <i>Cornhusker Collection >>
. It's a perfect 58 at 80% complete. Since the set is obscured we don't know what's missing, but is this the mythical perfect 58 set we've heard rumors of?
I agree with Vern- the '98 5C will come in as a 63. One nick away from a 65! >>
Well...the coin was cracked out of an NGC 65 Holder with a Green CAC sticker. One miniscule Nick on the OBV doesn't qualify it for a 63. I am looking for a 65 back and hopefully a plus.
Looking at images the size of dinner plates is no true way of grading - and even the most insignificant thing will look like a major catastrophe when the image is so large. Feel free to browse my V Nickel set ( GinjaMax) as there are many MS 63-64's mixed in with my preferred grade of choice, AU 58.
I laughed at the EVERYMAN Set of AU 58 Halves.... Only one person I know of from the Cornhusker State who collects Halves, right Doug ?
No one likes opening their sets up when they are still searching for the elusive 58. Don Willis and Darrell Kreiss both locked their sets, as I did when I was nearing completion in AU, my problem was I kept buying MS coins to replace the AU 55's.
It takes a tremendous dedication to complete that set in solely AU 58; I thought Barry Sunshine was well on his way to finishing off his set, until I saw his son, David, was selling the coins off piece meal on the BST and at the larger shows' bourse floors.
I picked up a minor upgrade for my Half Set, nothing outrageous believe me, but a very pleasant 1907-D in PCGS 53... ( whose image is attached at the bottom link of this post ... Under New Barber Purchases ) EDIT: Attachment:
I have a duplicate 07-D in 40 now, scheduled to go to Glenn Holsonbake for his new venture: Americana Rare Coins ( He'll fill you in on the details soon enough ).
Please remember to keep this Sunday and Tuesday Heritage Auctions in your scope: I have a consignment of AU 58 V Nickels and a few Dimes plus a half dozen AU Quarters hitting the block. You may also recognize a certain Half Dollar in a Genuine holder...lol Ok, any more details, it'll be considered Spam ... So, I'll stop.
Have a good weekend. We're enjoying one of the last beautiful weekends we have before the Rainy Season befalls us. Ok... Off to "Rover Run" with the Dobies.

<< <i>Mike.....Unless a reliable birdie is not reliable the rumored set has not been posted! >>
Darrell- you are correct. I spoke with Brad (Cornhusker Collection); he confirmed his set is not complete. He's been in the process of assembling a 58 set for 10 years in a variety of holders; he's been crossing them to PCGS over the last year. I thought the rumored set being discussed might be his, but no. I wonder how many other really nice sets are out there flying under the radar?
A lot of the coins in my set are really nice 55's. At this point in time I see no need to upgrade them; I'll never be in the running for top dog. I purchase really nice '58's when the price is reasonable, but only if I'm not in love with my 53 to 55's.
The registry competition has really driven up the price of most AU 58's!
