    Jim,

As the carnival barker used to say... "Put your money where your mouth is" !

Throwing a number like that out there gives false hope to those who would
like to sell their AU - 1909-O's. I think Doug's coin is as nice an AU as I have
seen for the date. However, I know of two MS that I could buy together for far
less than $20K and have change left over to buy an AU 55.

Doug... An offer of $20K for your coin is a pipe dream ...IMHO. And, I love your coin !!

The newest addition to my set, a 1903 S 50C PCGS AU 58:

    image

    image

I purchased it from David Sunshine; it replaces a really nice AU 55 in my set Not a significant upgrade, but the POP count on this coin at 58 is only 11; I thought I would purchase it when I had the chance.
    I love them Barber Halves.....

You did good, Jeff. David's father, Barry Sunshine was well on his way to a complete set
of AU 58 Barber Halves but stopped short for no reason I know of. Barry has exquisite
tastes and many of his coins were scooped up by a certain collector ( who remains nameless ).

Boosibri - Really nice tough coin to find at an antique store. Congrats.

    Jim - That's a bold statement.

Mike - Wonderful look on your new MS dime.

Jeff - Congrats on the '03-S newp. One of my favorite dates.

    ksu - PM.

Dave - My half set (limited as it is) is in the registry, other than the one posted below. And thanks for the compliment, the scratch looks worse in the pic than it does in hand.

Vern... I tried unlocking ksuscott's link, can't be done.
He/ she could send one of us an email with the pics &
we'll add them here. Not to worry ksuscott, we'll help ya.

I spoke with Joe the other day. He's just back from his annual
Post Tax Time Vacation. Things are good and he sounded very
relaxed. He mentioned he can't remember when was the last
time he bought a coin for his collection. I guess when you own
the key date in high end AU there is not too much to look for.
I believe his Dime set is close to 98% AU 58. Nice set of Dimes,
if I do say so myself !

The Heritage auction last night yielded an 02-S Quarter in PCGS 55
which was sold at a give away price.

    imageimage

Other Quarters that I consigned, did not hit the levels I had hoped for. Tomorrow's Internet Only auction
contains three more of my duplicate Quarters ( also selling at no reserve). Plus a deeply toned MS Dime -
the REV color is just amazing.

Another NEWP - which is fairly inconsequential - was an 1889 V Nickel
in NGC 62 - which has great toning. I saw the coin in hand at FUN when
it was consigned by my friend, Srotag, and it really stood out from all the
other V Nicks he gave them.

Mike - Good to hear that Joe W is doing well.
Interesting how prices are sometimes up and sometimes down in Heritage auctions. Seems like it's more luck of the draw than it should be for such a big venue.
Congrats on the 1889 V Nickel newp.

Pics for this AM, V Nickel newp from a friend's collection in an old NGC green print holder. Any idea what time frame these labels were used?

Well...The Gardner sale was filled with Diamonds Emeralds and Rubies....
The prices reflected this. Even the collector with deeper pockets than most
were blown out of the water.

    Congratulations to Gene Gardner.

A good friend, SROTAG, was lucky to win three great Halves:

Mike - Those are 3 beautiful halves, congratulations to Srotag.

The Gardner barber quarters certainly did well yesterday. The 97-S in 67 brought $31K plus the juice. Other top pop qtrs also set new highs. And here I was under the illusion that we were in a soft market and that the upcoming Pogue sale would keep money on the sidelines. Silly me.

Boosibri - Like your European color.

I'm sending in a box of coins to PCGS today; many raw Barber Halves. Here's a photo of one of them, a 1904:

    image

    image

I bought the coin on eBay with mediocre photos hoping it might be 58 quality. With coin in hand it's not, but I still think it has a great chance at 55. I was hoping for an upgrade for my current 55, but I don't think this one has what it takes.

    Mike P. :

The 05 Half in Gem is very difficult, and usually they are
dipped out. Not this one though. It's about as pretty as I
    have seen.

I have loved every Barber you have sent me. Thanks for
    sharing this Gem.

I just picked up a choice AU 58 1894 Half earlier this morning.
It's very flashy and creamy white. They don't exist as pretty
as the 1905 that Mike just posted.

Welllllll! image I finally completed what I originally started out doing with Barber Half's! I received the last 45 I needed in the mail today to complete my 45 set! I now have a complete sets of PCGS Graded Barber Half's in F-12,F15,VF20,VF25,VF30,VF35,XF40,XF45 and My AU Everyman set. As like many...there are a few coins I would like to replace. I actually screwed up and forgot to update a coin in my 40 set. I missed the removal request and my 40 set was retired by PCGS. That means I have a lotta hoops to jump through to get PCGS to allow me to repost my 40 set. image

Thanks all! I will be content to just continue to improve what I have.

    I have a question....drum roll for Mike.
Has anyone played around with the digital albums PCGS has introduced? If so have they increased the size of the pictures they allow. It is really a pain to edit every picture's size!
  • JeffMTampaJeffMTampa Posts: 3,281 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Darrell-

There's no issue with the file size for photo uploads; I upload 6 to mg files without a problem. The digital photo album uses the photos that you upload with each coin record- no need to upload them again. You can take a look at my album; there's plenty of detail. I really love the digital album feature!

On another note does anyone know what PCGS did yesterday to increase the scores for most (but not all) sets? The highest possible score was increased as well.

I have tried adding images to a virtual album, but my images are a mish mash
of edited side by side pics with the label over the OBV and REV ... Or they are
the images I borrowed from the sellers when I bought one of their coins. The
size of each coin is all over the place. Yes, you can massage the size but it's difficult
using an iPad. I really enjoy looking at other sets however.

I am , as they say, the old dog learning new tricks.

    Side note:

Anyone see the newest issue from the Moonlight Mint ( J. Carr's company ?)
I spotted a 1916 Half, and ordered one - for my Dansco album - I already
have a 1931-S SLQ in there. There is a thread going around about it. Had to
laugh, our buddy Dogwood has a request: a fantasy 1904-S Quarter be issued !!
I'd be in for that one too !!

Jeff, Go have a look at the new registry set terms and agreements. They are giving different weightings to diffent things.Top pops, etc. My set average went up quite a bit also! My ace in hole right now is my 98-O in 58+ with a pop of 1. If I am not mistaken it is toughest and most weighted of the 1/2's which have been graded 58+. Even common date + grades will give you a good boost.

Mike..I know what you mean about pic's. It is time consuming enough to take pictures and crop. I would be in for that if I could simply upload my pictures. Having to either resize or go through photobucket adds a considerable amout of time for the endeavor! I'm surprised PCGS doesn't have an auto resize for uploaded pictures like for instance what ebay uses.

I was game for one of those 16 halfs but my limited for stuff like this is $50.

    Darrell-

Thanks for the link- now I understand!

You don't need to use Photobucket (or like) to upload images to your coin records; it will upload from your hard drive. I suppose it is a bit time consuming to take photos and upload them, but how else do we get a chance to view our collection? Just about everyone keeps their coins in Safe Deposit boxes. As my eyes get older looking at large pictures has become my preferred way7 to look at the coins (especially the Half Dimes).

It's a very common date, but a nice PCGS AU 58. Does anyone know where Heritage gets the coins to sell on eBay? Are they consigned coins, or does Heritage own them outright?

Grades have been going up in sets incrementally, as they slowly upgrade the software. I think the first go-around mostly counted the top pops 1/0 coins (up two bonus points), and then the second bump up was for the tied for finest known like 2/0, 6/0, etc that add one bonus point to grades. There may be other tweaking that PCGS is doing to make it all work and be uniform. The system is really complex, as you can substitute varieties in some sets, and what do you do if the variety is the top pop compared to the main coin? Lots of small details like that for PCGS to work out. I would give it even more time to get optimized. Once the dust settles, it should be less problematic.

I do know this, I was second finest all time with the Barber half registry set before these new bonus points, and remain in second place, but have lost some ground on the Dr. and Mrs Steve Duckor set, due to that set having a substantial number of 0/1 finest known coins. Also that set had many tied for finest known coins. It makes it harder to catch up to such a set now.

Jeff - Congrats on a good looking acquisition (and a qtr, too). I'm guessing their ebay offerings are part of their inventory.

Pete - I suppose those changes make sense. Seems like altering the rules of the game after the game has started to me, tho.
