Somebody's getting impatient! I'm absolutely surprised you bought this coin!

<< I have not checked eBay in some time - and aside from locating my old 1898-O Half in PC 64,

I just found this 1913-P Half in PC 45 - which I have been waiting for some time. Thanks Chris !!

Granted, its not the nicest 45 around... but at the moment ... it was the only one.

I have two more upgrades to go to finish the set the way I want it.

A little bird told me that my new 1913 isn't quite up to snuff.
Well the VF 30 that is in my set that I picked up from Darrell
a few years ago, pales in comparison.

As Tyler said, there hasn't been an XF 45 example available for years.

Here's another 1913 that I picked up in an almost complete set of Halves - from a dealer
in Louisiana .... he was missing only the 05-O ....

It was a pretty decent set of VF - AU's...

The above coin came from Darrelll....

This coin was bought raw from Walkerguy21D ... I was praying it would grade - nope - now - its consigned to an upcoming auction.

The thread has slipped to page 4 and is still stuck. I'll post my new 1915 S 50C PCGS AU 58:

This coin was purchased raw in November; came back a couple of weeks ago from PCGS. A nice coin, but a fairly common date.

I feel confident this post will bump the thread, but pessimistic about unsticking it.

Jeff.... Once again you surprise me with buying a raw coin and slam-dunk you get another 58 !! Nice job.

I received my Stacks Bowers catalog yesterday and spotted a few things I lust over - none I can use that
I can actually afford however. It's sems that this happens more often than not.

The large string of images I posted the other day to unstick this thread, had an 1897-O in XF which I wish
I still owned to this day. This is the last date in XF or better I need to finish off the set. I thought I needed
another couple, but I have upgraded the few others I thought I needed.

My 1898-O in 64 Half arrived this afternoon. It's just as pretty as I remembered it.

Jeff, Congrats again on another successful "make." BTW, my girls make me watch Grease at least twice a year. Since we are Rizzos, they get a kick out of that.

Quite a few nice coins posted over the last two pages. All very impressive!

My wife used to listen to them practice in LA before they became famous and she said they sounded terrible - luckily I found her and she had "Legs" - I'm not going to comment on her ability to do the TSB.

Chatted with Labelman87 yesterday - just catching up.
He has quite an extensive collection that would be the
envy of most collectors. I might have to fly up to Georgia
one of these days and ogle his sets again !!

The night before FUN began (a few weeks back) I purchased what I thought was the "Holy Grail" at an eBay "Buy it Now" listing; a 1897 O 50C that looked to be in AU condition (raw). The listing photos were very low resolution and a bit blurry:

During the entire time at FUN I was so excited I could hardly contain myself; I thought I had found a raw AU '97 O Half; a seemingly impossible task! I finally received the coin on the Monday after FUN:

My stomach immediately sank. The coin had a very rough surface- porous looking. There were significant dings and gouges; I knew immediately I was holding a piece of junk. After looking at the coin a photographing it my conclusion is that it's a fake, but I'm not 100% certain. Aside from the surfaces looking very odd, the mintmark doesn't look right. Fortunately I was able to return the coin for a refund, but I was crying inside as I sealed the package to return it.

My quest for the elusive '97 O half continues.

By the way, I entered my Everyman's Barber Half collection into the new Registry Set Album feature last night and published it. It's a great way to be able to view a collection (assuming your coins are imaged). The 3 empty holes in my set are currently in NGC slabs. My '06 S NGC 55 is back at PCGS to cross at any grade (it didn't cross as a 55). I was going to submit my '08 O and '09 NGC coins for crossover at FUN, but I picked up raw examples that I liked better than the ones in my NGC holders so I submitted them for grading instead.

If you haven't checked out this new album feature go look at my set- you'll want to go get your set imaged as soon as possible!

Jeff, it is most definitely a fake. You are right about the mint mark as well as the surfaces. Also the denticles are different shapes which is the first thing I look for. The date looks goofy, and I can't remember ever seeing a broken letter like the E in STATES without some sort of corresponding damage. Good catch, and I am glad you were able to get your money back. May the hunt continue.

Not always true, I've purchased the following raw halves at a fraction of their value that graded:
- 1892 O; graded a MS 62 by PCGS
- 1894; graded AU 58 by PCGS (this is a tougher coin than PCGS seems to think)
- 1896 S; graded AU 50 by PCGS
- 1904 S; graded VF 30 by PCGS
- 1905 O; graded AU 58 by PCGS
- 1914; graded AU 58 by PCGS

I've also purchased another 25 to 30 raw coins in my set that are graded in various states of AU by PCGS, but they were purchased at over 50% of true market value. I'm managed to purchase a few stinkers along the way as well, but overall I've been very fortunate.

I was offered an upgrade to my 1895-O Half ...
I currently have a PCGS 50 - the result of too
through a dip - and it's being replaced with a
meaty crusty original AU 53. It's on its way to CAC.

Some of my best coins were purchased raw, then later graded by PCGS. I bought a really nice 1904-S VF35 on Ebay for $450. You can't do that anymore!

Coin does look hokey, the date and mintmark especially. Even if genuine, the porous surfaces would have been a concern. When it comes to finding a nice, original AU 1897-O, some of us are willing to do just about anything.

I was contemplating buying a cleaned AU 1897-O and using it as a pocket piece to wear off the hairlines. Friggin' impossible to find.

You could fill an olympic sized swimming pool with the popular "key" dates, before you will ever find an AU 1897-O half.

Jeff, No guts, no glory, I guess. Your success rate in making Barber halves is remarkable. Personally, I haven't purchased a raw Barber anything in years. I look, but I just don't see any raw ones that I like (above VG grade anyway.) The ones I see that I think might grade just don't appeal to me. Believe me, I wish I could find more quality raw coins. I do, however, find NGC and ANACS coins that are ignored which I like very much.

Mowgli, NTT not ringing any bells. I'll bet it's a great song!

Mike, Congrats on your upgrade and looking forward to pix.

The album had mostly original pieces, but the majority of them even the commons were in low grades.
I had also bought the 1893-s and 1898-s (VG and VF30 respectively) and sold those though.
The 92-o was the only one that I may have made a mistake by not buying...it was liner VG10-F-12 IIRC but crusty and original. I didn't have the funds for that one and have been kicking myself as based on these coins it was at least a fine (For VG BID).
