Well, I looked at my 10 coins last night and I'm not sure what to think. Does PCGS detract from the grade for planchet defects (i.e. - pre-existing dents or scratches)?

The finish is attractive and for the life of me, I don't understand why the Mint would go to the trouble & expense of using multiple finish effects, come up with packaging for a special set, and then use planchets that have already "been through the mill", so to speak.

I guess that my question is really, what will they allow for planchet defects and still grade the coin a 69? A scratch that is over-struck is still a scratch, isn't it?image

So, I just checked the Mint's site and I don't see the C & C set listed under Native American Coins.

Probably depends on how distracting it is.

    New numbers are out:

11/23/2014...2014 AMERICAN $1 COIN & CURRENCY SET.....9,720...That's +9,720 units over the previous week
11/30/2014...2014 AMERICAN $1 COIN & CURRENCY SET...14,073...That's +4,353 units over the previous week

So only 14K sold, and 36K to go?

Something sounds wrong here, but maybe not... image

I wouldn't be surprised if they only made 15,000 sets at most and are holding back a few to cover returns, etc. Unless they minted more a couple months back, I can't see them going on the presses again to make more. Consider these an early Christmas present. image

Makes sense...initial run of 15k...Hq kiosk has the left overs.

I received my two sets today and pretty much saw what's been reported. The finish is quite attractive, not quite regular in all places and certainly not perfect but no major detractors. Ink smear to right of portrait on the bbbboooorrriiiiinnnnggggg dollar bill.

<< <i>So 5000 Goodacre Sac Dollars go for $400. Probably 25000 mintage for the enhanced at 5 times the mintage of the Goodarcre. This coin could be worth raw about $80 maybe. We shall see. >>

I don't think that you can translate mintage perfectly into market price by doing the math. I was looking in my Red book and it has the Goodacre coin at $450 with 5000 made but the Detailed Tail Feathers (Cheerios) dollar at $2500 with 5500 made. So clearly there are other factors.

Yup...considering on the 26th someone here said they bought "over 9000" themselves...couldn't have been in the 1st numbers (would have left only 720 for everyone else),,,,and couldn't have been in the 2nd either....numbers only increased 4353

    Hmmmmmm......

In the mint report it gives the total as mentioned by also says no longer available...does that "N" now also mean on backorder? Never did before....

Kennedy clad set is also on backorder but is listed appropriately as available...."Y"

What makes me smile is that I think a lot of the thousand pound gorillas in the coin world got blind sided on this one for the most part. Some may hang out here from time to time but most may have been dozing or did not have time to get their army of proxy buyers going. Will be interesting to see how it works out in the long run.

    Wouldn't that be freakin awesome!

Most likely next week that "N" will be a "Y".....but for now it is what it is....

Edited to add: maybe this is the Mint saying "You don't want to buy my crap sets????...well here's one for ya....oh, BTW, after the fact we threw in an EU coin AND only minted 14k..."....

Follows the mintage of the Teddy Roosevelt Chronicles Set of around 15K in sales. They may not do a second run.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the "N" just means it's unavailable, not sold out.

The Kennedy 50th clads also flipped to "N" when they were unavailable. They're back on sale now. That's why I didn't even mention it.

Question is this. Would the Mint go through the trouble of making more of a side show product so close to the end of the year and during the holidays when a lot of people are off work and distracted? My guess it no but you never know for sure with the Mint since they do have this obsession with fairness.

We have gone thru this before with many issues over the last few years.

For example, with the 2013 W Buffalo Proofs, last year.

The "N" on the weekly production website, seals the deal, they are out of Coins, (with the exception of a couple hundred for returns).

The MINT contractor missed Cyber Monday sales, these are gone, IMHO.

    Adjust accordingly ;>

Except when they 'came back', the US Mint had lowered the original Production from 300,000 units to 225,000 units......These are not Kennedy-like, just sayin'...image

    When were these on N?
When I look back over the last month, they were always Y, whether backordered or not, from what I see on the mint's Cumulative Numismatic Sales Figures site?

I hope they decide soon. FS is an easy yes call. I hope they allow pre-cracked coins.

I'm actually in the "hope they don't do a FS" camp.
I should have my 10 soon, but not sure what I will do with them right away. Since they will be sealed, I could always do the FS at a future point, but since I probably want to keep a couple, that means I either have to make a quick decision or automatically put them in the "non-FS" camp.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Or just buy 2 more...You're not going to retire with 10, FS or not...and certainly not jinxing the entire FS potential for your couple sets...image

Their "sold out" for all intent and purpose right now.
Would have to buy them on the after market and, like I said right now, I am unsure what I want to do. If someone ends up buying them, I generally would need to sell all in the single, unopened, box to keep the FS available to them.

I'm kind of wondering the mint's packaging on these now........last few have been "overpacked" when they didn't need to be (previous issues)

Cripes -- for the amount of $ they charge they could at least update their website more often. It does not show any FS available for these. I guess they prefer hundreds of phone calls over just posting...

If the final mintage turns out to be 15,000 these sets are going to be worth a lot more than $30.

The 1995-W proof silver eagle has a mintage of 30,000 and sells for $3000+.
