Vern....yes I am. The sad part is why oh why doesn't PCGS like coins with original skin. For a 97-O it has plenty of meat and I see enough luster. I wouldn't be surprised if it was dipped if it came back 53. Should AU as is and most certainly would sell for strong AU money in the holder it is in!

Lenny, congratulations, knowing where you picked that up, it
surprises me you'd risk cracking it out , unless you want the
Miami Heat and humidity to do their wonders on silver to tone
it up a bit. Remember to use an old Waite Raymond ( Raymond
Waite ? ... I am always confused about the Mfg of the National
Albums and the Interior Designer ) .

Mike, I really like the 07-S considering the price, but an ANACS 58 details holder does no justice to the coin, and doesn't help me one bit. The best 07-S I've owned is my 53 S/S. I remember seeing your 58 in 2011 at FUN and what you were asking. I ended up purchasing the 09-O 55 gold CAC from you that day. Anyway, I think this 07-S is as nice as the one you had, holder or not, at a fraction. This coin is dipped or lightly wiped, but I have no problem owning it raw at twice the price, so I'm very happy! I just don't get to see to many 07-S quarters, and I rate it higher than the coveted 08-S.

Len,

The date was JANUARY 2012... Not 2011....
I had sold my 1907-S in August 2011 at the
Summer ANA. Vern was sitting behind me
during my auction !!

Here is the one that sold in 2011 - at the ANA Summer Show

The 1907-S you saw at FUN was the coin I took
on consignment - along with the 09-O in Gold CAC
PCGS AU 55 which I had bought - and sold to you.

EDIT: Here is the 07-S I had on consignment:

Somewhere buried are my old pricing sheets... I don't remember if I ended up selling it - or if it went back home to the consignor ?!!
Nice coin though...

I was bound by my consignor's wishes as far as price
was concerned. I need to do some digging now and post
the coin you referred to. All i know is that I should have
bought the entire consignment for myself, but I was not
thinking about starting yet another set of Quarters at that
moment.

Statistically speaking - and I don't put a lot of stock in this due to slabbing these not only being popular just the past 5-8 years, but also the majority of collectors collecting them raw - and
The 1907-S and 08-S are similar in mint state; both have 62-63 total pop grades MS @PCGS
The 1907-S is far more scarce in AU for some reason; only eight coins in grades 55 and 58 combined 3/55; 5/58). Of the five coins graded 58 one is a broad strike held by a long time collector of broad strike error, one is mine and one is secured in Gary's collection ; likely not going anywhere for a long time - 3 of the 58s are off the market leaving three AU55 and two AU58 known slabbed PCGS choice AU coins and the pop in 53 is 3 and 6 in 50 ...

The 07-S is more available in F-XF than the 08-S but not by a lot

The above means very little to me - there is no control so it is a flawed hypothesis. Additionally it's only taking PCGS graded coins into account and I understand a lot of people only want that are only shopping for that you're limiting your options by doing so but to each his own...

That said I do watch for the semi keys of the series in many venues- raw or in any other holder including Third World holders,.. The 07 continues to be very elusive - but only in AU while it is very available in F- VF. The 08-S is over rated to me; I've seen many in VF-MS and once again, scarce in AU but not as scarce as the 07-S. They both go against the grain as much of the series is more available in AU than F-VF

I personally think you will see the pops start to rise with the quarters now that you guys are fighting for them....that is what is happening with the halves now that many of us have battled it out!! The interesting part will be to see if there is support for the excess from new collectors....

As you mentioned, I did not see the first 07-S you posted. The second one does not look like the one I saw either. Maybe there was a third? Could be the coin in hand didn't look like the photos too.

Scott, thanks for the research. From my personal experience, I see twice as many 08-S's come by. Very small sample, I guess.

Mike, It did not return to the consignor. It was a big mistake by the consignor, ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was quite nice. I wish it did or would return!!!!!

Doug, your PC53 is almost perfect. ...Made even better by Vern's expert image.

Edit: I flew to Atlanta to buy the 1909-O in 55 Gold CAC ... So, it was mine. While I was there, I picked up a large consignment from Labelman87 !

many times an image doesn't portray the coin correctly..... The AU 55 belonged to Labelman87
and I believe it was his only one. I had professional images taken of all his pricier coins ... and
I used my cell phone to image the rest ... So, you know how those came out ! }

I just felt like posting an image today. I've been in the process of assembling an upper grade circulated set of Barber Halves for several years. Until earlier this year my set was predominately NGC (now about 80% PCGS). I've had 2 MS coins in the set for several years; a 1915 D MS 62 and a 1905 MS 61. I replaced the '15 D earlier this year with a PCGS 58, and at the Heritage Auction Sunday I was the high bidder on a 1905 NGC AU 55 ( that I hope will cross). I really love the look of my 1905 PCGS MS 61:

Unfortunately this coin doesn't fit into what I want in the Barber Half set. I originally bought it raw thinking it was a 58, but it originally was graded by NGC as a 61 and then crossed at PCGS as the same grade (even though I listed 58 as acceptable) earlier this year. I'm not sure if I want to sell it or keep it. I'm wondering if standards may change in the future allowing this to be considered a 58.

Jeff,

Really nice looking 1905 Half. Regardless of whether or not it's a 61 or a 58,
the coin has a great look about it. I too would list on cross overs on low end
MS NGC coins as AU 58 Minimum ... and that use to work for me. Have not
done that in some time.

An old expression keeps haunting me.... "You want a coin in a PCGS holder ?
Buy the coin in a PCGS holder."

The upcoming Gardner sale has a large percentage of Barbers in NGC holders
and 99.99% of them are above my preferred grades ... and the prices for high
end MS coins are well above my means... still I believe the majority of these
NGC coins would easily slide over into PCGS holders. I spotted a common Dime,
in an uncommon grade with the type of toning I crave ... but I know I do not have
a snow ball's chance in Hell of getting it.

When Heritage publishes the hard bound catalog of all four auctions of the Gardner
collection, I am more than interested in having one for my family room coffee table.

Chewed the fat today with Labelman87.... He'll be posting something very sweet soon.

DIMEMAN and I go back and forth all the

Vern, look closely at your 02-S Half in 40, I see
a pin dot of PVC on the OBV and REV. FYI, our
hosts no longer honor a free dip/"conservation"
But I'd have it taken care of before a real problem
happens.
