2009 lincoln formative / Lp2 mint boxes / proof sets / doubled die errors

<< Well, it's a snow day here in Mich and my kids got the day off.

Decided to play with the pennies a bit, put a bunch of 1's and 2's in flips. Found quite a few other odds and ends. I also found one of my old pics. One of only 2 coins that I ever lost money on. Hard to figure as IIRC a 67 initially went for $2,700 or so. I then snagged a 69 a few days later for at most $500 on bids, never thought I'd win the coin. Soon after, I tried a reflip, I think went for maybe $460. Let me puzzled and the only thing I could come up with was the plastic was to blame.

Casman, was the 67 in an ANACS yellow holder, also (I'd think so, as they were/are the only TPG to attribute them, until the CPG includes them, no?)? The buyer of that 67 BETTER be a BIG believer, and hope ALOT MORE are, or he could be buried big time in it, especially where you got a 69 for less than 20% of the 67, and still lost on it reflipping it. But, I suspect you are right, as far as the only reason for the downward spiral was the plastic it is in. In our host's plastic, should be interesting to see what the prices/premiums could be.

Yup, it was in an Anacs holder, but keep in mind this was back in 2009, right around the time they were discovered, and I'm not sure of the overall pops with the anacs stuff.

I have submitted to them in the past, but almost always found their POP reports to be insufficient/blank etc...

The ones I had were both graded as PR69.

It will be interesting to see what value is attached to the proof errors once the new CPG is finally released (still no answer from Whitman Publishing to my email inquiry).

I very recently found the wddr-005 in a silver proof set (pure luck at this late date). It has a valuation by John Wexler a little bit higher than the 001.

I may have it graded at a later date but for now it's still encased in the original mint packaging.

Personally I'd like to have the 006 variety of all that are known ...

2009-S errors .... it has the most pronounced doubled image and is comparably valued to the 005.

I've got a couple 005's in my silver proof sets as well. I wouldn't worry about keeping them "intact" since the lenses on the sets are not sealed and you can easily swap them in and out.

I may have to look through my proof sets again, I was only looking for the 001 when I looked at them before, Maybe I will open up my uncirculated sets too for a quick peek.

I'm sure you're sitting on something Pitboss, knowing your track record...

There are only 6 total errors known in the proof cents. Makes it just a little bit harder to find. Not sure what the pop reports

are. I'm still looking for errors in the satin finish as well. There are only 12 known errors in this series.

Just for fun I opened an lp2 box dated 5/1 today....found eight of the wddr-012's. The nice thing about them, even though they don't rate as a "best of" error, is that they were all the stage D reverses.

It's good to look for different stages within a certain error coin. Some are very obvious with giant die cracks and some are more subtle like these are. Good practice to work on my concentration skills...ha!

Very important as some of the formative variety coins are in there.

Its the "Almanac of United States coins" published by Whitman and it just came out.

I bought mine at Amazon.

According to the publisher some of the 2009 P varieties are in there.

Also the new Cherry Pickers probably will not be coming out till next year.

I will let you know the facts on what is in the new book when I get my copy Friday.

THIS IS A BIG DEAL!!!!

Sorry to hear that PB -- although I must admit the Almanac looked like just another Redbook with fluff. I think Whitman should be focusing on updating worthy publications like the CPG maybe annually instead of pushing out more Redbook adjuncts.

Don't get me wrong, I own many copies of the Redbook, and it has been my staple coin reference, but it isn't staying on top of modern mintages as experts like Eric Jordan have demonstrated.

Keep asking about the CPG -- they need to know this is more worthy to update regularly.

The only way to update this regularly is digitally. As long as they continue traditional publishing methods it will NEVER be current.

The fear of change, or clinging to tradition for tradition's sake, opens opportunities for innovation.

The sad thing is they don't seem to care; nor do the TPGs, who covet and enslave us to these bound bibles.

Why won't PCGS or NGC go to any recognized specialists web site for attribution? Someone please explain that to me.

The world of printing and publishing started its downslide in the 1970's and is almost completely gone from the days when I used to work in the bookbindery. I remember the days when I used to make hard bound books by hand and I doubt if there are many of us left that would even remember how it was done. Companies like Whitman will not survive long if they continue their practice of the old ways and do not conform to the modern way of doing things. Everybody wants a digital system now where they get what they are looking for in a hurry and things can be updated in the blink of an eye.

Papi and Pitboss...they'll (the coin publishing world) come around as soon as a new competing company surfaces. With today's technology it's only a matter of time when it happens.

In the meantime we wait for the dinosaurs to go extinct.

I received an NGC ms66 "bootstrap collection" cent in the mail today. I purchased it for two reasons. First, I wanted to see what NGC considers a "66" to compare to my findings and help me decide more clearly

which of my coins are potential 67's or 68's. I was shocked at the hit marks that were on the coin and still registered as a high ms example with them. Gives me a very good feeling for several of my

"candidate" samples.

Secondly, I wanted a coin that has the bootstrap die crack (which I had zero of in my collection) As I said in a previous post, prior to winning it in the auction, I was mystified why NGC would acknowledge

a die crack variety but not the more important (and more rare) doubled dies.

Don't put too much faith in what NGC grades these things at, they do not grade as well as ANACS in my opinion.

We can only hope that these kind of listings sell and as a result begin to increase collector's interest and value. You can buy a raw one for $12.99 right now on Ebay. If PCGS' idea of a 66 is anything like NGC's

you may as well keep it raw and save the money on attribution. pop 2...haha

On another note, I finally found a low price on a bank box of 50 rolls yesterday. I just can't spend big bucks nowadays to take a chance on finding something. My last two boxes gave up nothing

but die cracks and insignificant ddr's. I am starting to believe they were re-packaged after a cherry pick. Looking forward to seeing what, if anything, is hiding inside those rolls. This box looks to be

original; not the generic multi-holed top box. Wish me luck!

I know I got into the game late and have been fortunate enough to pick up some good boxes but also have looked through many bad boxes and expect to do more bad boxes . You learn to just get back up, dust yourself off, or get out of the game. The game is too much fun for me to get out. It could be dollar coins we are playing with and that would sure narrow the playing field.

Well, my new bank box didn't turn out to be a "treasure chest" as Papi would describe it. I scanned the ends of the rolls and I found three with wddr-086's. Put those aside for later. Opened two others

and found only one 086 inside and a ton of die cracks (rim to mallet) . I think that concludes my bank box purchases. Papi is probably right about the train having left the station on the better boxes. I just don't

have the funds to "gamble" too much. I'll content myself to finding buys on known winners in the lp2 mint boxes.

Does anyone know who coalcounycoins is on Ebay? He is selling everything so cheaply that it discourages me from listing anything at this time. here's an example

Maybe he got your name from a "beware" post that gets floated around on here from time to time? Some sellers just blindly add people because of stories. Dunno, just a guess

Doesn't surprise me. The last one only listed Lincolns to 2000; now it's 13 years behind.

The spear runs straight across horizontally tilts a bit up (its starts from the L in Lincoln and runs a tad upward thru the back of his neck then continues to the end of 9 in 2009!)
Looks just a nice as the Speared Bison nickels ... obviously since a nickel is bigger the spear is a tad smaller on a penny but you can see this w/o a loupe (naked eye).

I originally was credited w the Lincoln die clash find which Ken Potter had documented and created the copyrighted layovers that I now see everyone on Earth using! OMG LOL

Anyhoo . . . I bought 5 boxes from the Mint & stuck'em back, dated 4/30 with time stamps between 10:15 & 10:50 (just went & looked).
To keep me from having to read all of the 40 some pages here, could someone tell me if these might be worth opening? Thanks!

Wow, even the finder of the 08/07 error is showing some interest in these coins now. Watch out you will get hooked.

PS: Anybody need some rolls of 50 count on the WDDR 025, 032, or 060.

I have some on ebay which are pretty cheap right now that had a starting price of .99 going off Sunday afternoon.
