I purchased a '95 O Dime in a VG 8 ANACS holder about a month ago. I cracked it out and submitted it raw to our hosts. It came back last week with the same grade- now a PC VG 8:
It's the last New Orleans Barber needed to complete my Everyman Complete Barber set. The set is now missing 6 coins; all "S" mint.
Here's a slightly better date newp that has a few marks, but it seemed (to my eyes) to be a pretty good strike for a New Orleans coin and I liked the overall look enough to pull the trigger. Graded by our hosts as an MS62.
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.

That looks much nicer than a 62...…….
Honestly, Jeff, I thought the same thing. Maybe I'm biased since I own the coin, but I would've guessed 63+ or possibly 64 had I just seen the coin and not the label.

A few more pick-ups recently... this first one was because of what looks like a second O seen inside the upper lip of the overpunched O. Does anyone else have something similar? The 1903-O is in low grade but the novelty peaked my interest...

Thanks @jedm! Here's hoping that our hosts will, too. It's currently in an old ANACS slab and looks to my eye to be a solid AU57 but I'll try crossing it soon to see what happens...

AU57 huh? Now that's one I haven't heard of I'd like to see the ANACS slab.
Here's my latest addition which our hosts generously (IMHO) graded VF30 and is an upgrade to my set from a raw Fine looks to have been cleaned:
Lots of Barber sleepers. The 00-O half can certainly be a tough coin to find.
Another tough half is the 13-S. You can look a long time for a nice xf-au example
The hunt is half the fun anyway!!!!

Lol - I guess that’s my way of saying that crossing to a 55 (it’s currently a 58) would be a bit of a travesty although I’m also not sure our hosts will give it a straight cross without some degree of charity. We’ll see!

Nice new pick up! I like that look for VF.
Compare to this PCGS-graded VF30 quarter... I wasn't happy when this came back in a 30 holder. Do you think it had anything to do with what I see between the stars at about 2 or 3 o'clock? It was NGC 35 just prior.

I like the look of that one, small green spot notwithstanding. Question: Did you send it in holder or cracked out?

Cracked out!!! My thought it should be a 40!

I agree with Jon that the green spot is PVC and needs to be removed.
Regarding the grade PCGS assigned to Tim's 1894, I learned long ago that PCGS does not like darker toning on mid-grade Barber coins. They will, more often than not, reduce the grade by a full level even if the details are all there, whereas NGC tends not to reduce the grade for toning like that.

I agree it could have come back as a 35 or on a good day 40. PCGS is cyclical in their grading and are definitely in a tough cycle now.
Perhaps it was net graded also. The cheek and neck seem rough, almost granular. Plus the small reverse rim tick over OF might have played a part. Still a nice coin. Probably not worth a second look at our host because of the cost vs, value. Best wishes

I agree. They’re both market acceptable in my opinion. I guess that’s why collectors look at their submissions three times a day waiting for the grades. Like the old Wild World of Sports..,.,. The thrill of victory or the agony of defeat

I think she is beautiful Jeff. 1900-O's are one of my favorite dates and this one is a wonderful original beauty. Congrats!
I'll trade you my 55 and some cash for her.
Loving the crusty-ness Jeff!

This thread has slipped too far down so I'll bump it up by posting a coin I've had for a while:
My latest submission to our hosts is arriving in the mail today; I'll have a few new Barbers to post.
I was just thinking the same thing! My latest newp, on it's way.
That’s a very nice 04-O. Just s great look
Jeff - Personality goes a long ways.
jedm - Really nice look IMO.

WTG - Jeff...…..Nice original crusty 95-O. I wish I had my PCGS50 back.
Congrats Jeff. Sounds like you are in the home stretch.
Here's another new one back from the grading room:
I picked up this one raw- they still exist.
Of course I'm missing all the toughies in the Quarters and Dimes.
Besides the big three quarters what are you missing?
The ‘96 S, ‘01 S, and ‘03 S Dimes. I’m looking for nicer examples of those.
Good to know. I will let you know if I see one. Xf-au???
Jeff - Congrats on the results.

That coin is too nice for a 53- it should be in a 55 holder!
I agree!
Really! I would have thought 58 even. It's very attractive and photogenic.
IMO. Net graded. Wispy hairlines on the neck and cheek. Plus looks like retoning from a long ago dipping. But still an attractive coin
Jim
Here's another one of Halves back from the grading room:
This was a raw pickup as well. I purchased it thinking it was a 58 (my other '10 S is a 55), but I guess I should be happy with the results.

Grumpy grader. Try again.
Jeff - Next week your 10-S might come back as a 58.
Cary - I think the 1900-O date is quite underrated, both quarter and half. Yours has wonderful eye appeal.
Pics for this PM, another of Dan's halves, came back AU details cleaned. Surprised me (not the first time).

I think I have seen the 04-O half in person. I’m also surprised that went into a details holder. Just hard to predict anymore.
One wouldn't suspect that '04 O half as being a cleaned coin.
Here's one of my newps back from the grading room. It belongs in the Headlights Collection:
It was another raw purchase this spring.
A few more pick-ups recently... this first one was because of what looks like a second O seen inside the upper lip of the overpunched O. Does anyone else have something similar? The 1903-O is in low grade but the novelty peaked my interest...

It's hard to take a 62 when you were after a 58!
I see what you see, but not sure if it is a RPM.
Jeff
That’s low beams buddy. Not too bad
Here is a recent newp from G.M. out of New Jersey - a 1908-O quarter in PC45:

This appropriately-toned upgrade to my '04 arrived just in time for Independence Day. Happy 4th, everyone!
