I'm trying to figure this out. My proof $5 gold order number: 42959XXX 3/27/2014 at 7:03 PM still has the status "1 unit backordered. Expected to ship on 06/30/2014", while others on this forum have later orders for the UNC $5 gold with status "In Stock and Reserved" with credit cards already pinged for the amount of the order. I thought all orders would be fulfilled chronologically, but obviously that's not the case.
I will stick my neck out and say "it ain't over yet".
I predict the gold proof sellout will be late morning of the 28th, say 1000 ET. Unc will be mid afternoon on the 28th, say 3pm (hope it's later for my long-shot 1830 orders). Odd circumstances and cc probs will keep these alive longer than anticipated.
My orders were between midnite and 2am on the 28th. Still "in process" at this time, but it's close now. Tick tock.

There was not a set amount of proof or uncirculated gold to sell, the only stipulation was 50,000 coins TOTAL. Neither the proof or uncirculated coins could sell out first because the ratio of coins sold wasn't set until the mint sold 50,000.
I could be wrong about the uncirculated gold possibly selling out late in the evening on the 27th as the 2 uncirculated I have for 3:04 are still showing a 6/30 shipping date.
They must be right near the edge of getting and not getting depending on how many were rejected for whatever reason.
Well I was late to the as the coins didn't really impress me but on the night of the issue date reading all the hype on this forum I deceided to place a few orders.
The 1st order was 3/27/14 Thursday night at 5:57 PM for (2) unc Gold coins. Today they hit my credit card and the cancel box is gone so it looks like I will get at least the (2) unc gold coins.
I have (2) other orders placed after this one for various versions of all 3 unc coins but no activity on them yet.
I HATE all PROOF coins with a raging passion so I rarely purchase Proof Coins.
FYI, my 3:52pm order went in stock and reserved with cancel boxes gone and CC hit as well. Order includes Gold Proofs/Uncs and Silver Uncs. Now, do I sell them raw or send them into PCGS???
My 03/27/2014 at 06:35 PM order contains both proof & unc gold. The UNC coin has hit my CC, in stock & reserve, cancel box is gone. The Proof gold still shows an est shipping date of 6/30/2014.
I have 2 of each of the MS and Proof Gold. I placed an order at 6:28 PM on the 28th for one of each of the gold in MS and Proof. Can always hope. I will probably sell all 4 of the gold in unopened boxes. Won't even submit them. Really can't afford to keep these now. If I can make 2K on all 4 of my gold I will be happy. If these ever drop to the $600 level I may pick one up later on. Right now I have no interest in keeping these. I am not a baseball fan so that helps in getting rid of these.
I remember the 2011 anniversary sets. The 70s were in the 2k range and quickly dropped to $1200 level. I think the same could happen to these after the frenzy is all over. I know there are two dynamics (coin collector and baseball fan collector) working together to make the HOF popular. Guess we will all know in a year if these sustain their current price levels.
Right now a few BINs for $750 for the gold with no takers on ebay.
<< <i>In the wild wild world of HOF Baseball gold coins, there seems to be multiple levels of coin prices:
o Level 1: PCGS First Pitch and NGC Opening Day labels from the coins sold in Baltimore. The prices on these gold coins seems to be rising based upon the auctions and eBay listings. These are the highest priced HOF baseball gold coins. There were only 200 proof and 200 unc. sold in Baltimore.
o Level 2: PCGS First Stike and NGC ER labels (without autographs). For whatever reasons, the initial US Mint release and minting of these gold coins has clearly been delineated by these labels. The PCGS populations have not been increasing very much in the latest reports. There are an unknown number of gold coins entombed in sealed boxes waiting to be graded. The number of PCGS FS Grade 70 coins (without autographs) still remain in the single digits on eBay. As noted in a previous post, there is a tug of war between collectors and marketers over the FS Grade 70 coins which are desirable for the marketer's trifecta (First Strike + Grade 70 + autograph).
o Level 2a. This will be the non-First Strike Grade 70 coins. To date, the number of these has been very low to date but are increasing as the current US Mint releases increase the supply and these coins are sent to PCGS for grading. The increase will probably be seen starting in late June as the PCGS grades them. This might be valuable for the marketer's daily double ( Grade 70 + autograph)
o Level 3: raw coins. The current shipping of gold coins has greatly increased the supply of raw coins. The FS deadline of 5/6 and NGC deadline of 5/8 have passed and no more FS labels except for those in sealed boxes. This is the level most impacted by the great increase in supply. We will see how low they go.
Just some thoughts... >>
Here are some additional thoughts about potential demand:
o The increasing supply of HOF gold coins (40,000+ coins) has clearly pressured the prices of raw coins.
o The supply of First Strike coins continue to be limited with single digit listings in eBay and lower auction listings at great collections.
o (As PF70 collector also posted), the demand for these coins might appear to be: oo Collectors whose orders will not be processed by the US Mint oo Collectors looking to upgrade their coins oo Non collector baseball fans who could buy these now at lower prices. oo Crossover demand from marketers who might label the coins with an autograph or other special labels into collectibles. (Think about team collections, position collections, etc.) oooo This demand might stabilize the prices since the lower prices might encourage greater crossover demand.
oo Still looking for a past gold coin release that might resemble this. As Dr Fish posted, the HOF silver coin demand might resemble those for the Buffalo Silver Dollars. We will see....
<< <i>My 03/27/2014 at 06:35 PM order contains both proof & unc gold. The UNC coin has hit my CC, in stock & reserve, cancel box is gone. The Proof gold still shows an est shipping date of 6/30/2014. >>
That closes it down a little with a 06:35 order showing the proof not being available.
The gold coins are at the bottom. There were many light hearted flippers who are cancelling orders and selling cheap. The cancelled orders are being allocated to the later orders. Probably more uncirculated orders cancelled which is why later uncirculated gold's are going in stock & reserved. Look closely to the upper part of your order when checking to make sure it still says inprocess and not on hold or cancelled. Also many bought to flip to the big guys, who have lowered their buy prices forcing the scramble to sell. The lower prices will be short lived as demand will surely pick up way more that the supply after the cheaper coins are gobbled up.

<< <i>Any special labels still available to the average Joe Collector submitting 2 coins at a time? I assume the autograph labels are only for bulk submissions?

I am aware only of the special First Strike label available through 6/30/2014 and this is for sealed boxes now since the 5/6 deadline has passed.
I think any other labels have to be bulk submissions or special arrangements with PCGS.
<< <i>Can you send the HOFs into PCGS and still get the Baseball Label, just without the First Strike? I really don't want them in the standard blue label. >>
I am not aware of any other special Baseball labels for collectors other than the First Strike label which expires 6/30. You might want to contact some bulk submitters. I remember from past posts that might include Mitch @ WonderCoins, Ian @ Great Collections, etc. Maybe they could do something.
I just talked to a Mint rep & she is telling me that the official gold coin waitlist was 8:30pm. So if you order was before this then you should be safe.
(Seems this time is different than what I was told earlier, but she did talk to a supervisor to verify so maybe it is the correct time?)

That sounds reasonable. This would most likely be the cutoff time for the Proof gold orders. Although I would not be surprised if Proof orders pushing midnight would get filled due to cancelled orders. Several more weeks of gold shipments are coming.

Just for grins I checked and saw the population report had been updated.
For FS, the hardest to obtain is the PF half in 70 holding on to it's previous distinction. Creeping up to take over the fewest graded is the non-FS MS 70 half. More submissions will prove if a new champion is to be crowned.
Of note is the steep fall off of new FS's with the PF gold the only one in double digits. All the rest show the anticipated trickle.
Non-FS are just starting their increased quantities in hand. Or it could be just the rush to beat the glut when the new shipments start arriving. Look at the number of MS & PF halves and the PF dollars. Must have been a dealer order going in for grading.
