This is the highlight of my collecting life thus far. c1935 Byrrh Young Perez (autographed).
A Jew (like me), Perez was arrested in Paris and sent to Auschwitz (a concentration camp), where he was forced into boxing matches with fellow prisoners for the amusement of the prison guards. By 1945, of the original 1,000 prisoners sent to Auschwitz, Perez was one of only 31 to survive. In January 1945, just prior to the allied liberation of the camp, Perez and the other surviving prisoners were sent on a "Death March" by the Nazis. During the march, Perez was shot and killed by a prison guard for offering a fellow prisoner a piece of bread. His autograph is extremely rare.

I finally picked up one of the most common and over priced boxing cards at card shows. For some reason i see this card at every card show and dealers seem to think its woth 300 plus regardless of condition. Its the 1948 sugar ray Robinson card. I Know he has a 47 card but im not a huge fan of the charactuer type card so I prefer this one for my personal rookie card collection. The card routinely sells for 30 -50 bucks in this condition but I always seem to get get out bid. I was finally able to win it at a very reasonable price. Hopefully it grades a 4 but I like the white boarders and eye appeal. It's been sitting on my checklist for a while and was a common card I am happy to finally cross off.
I know it's not a card, but I just wanted to share. I picked up an original photo from the 1889 Sullivan/Kilrain fight. It photo itself measures 16 x 10.5.
Found them on eBay doing a random search. Was really just looking for a good Rocky Graziano photo (just lost out last night on three great wire photos from when Graziano beat Zale).
<< <i>Thanks, Chad. That's 1935 UTC Joe Louis - is a tough card! Congrats to you! What I don't understand is why it's impossible to find in high grade? I'm wondering if it wasn't released loose in tobacco packages? I don't think I've ever seen one without the severe staining. >>
The UTC cards aren't a 1935 issue. My memory is foggy but they were released sometime between 1939-1941. Probably a moot point now as PSA has slabbed so many of them with the 1935 issue date that there's no way they're going to correct it now. But I wanted to mention it as many here seem to be focused on "rookie cards" and the UTC is definitely not one.
As far as the Joe Louis.... I believe there was a subsequent printing of Joe Louis cards from this set. If you'll notice, many of the Louis' that get sold are printed on a light brown card stock, almost like a box cutout. Yet every other card from this set is issued on a glossy white card stock. Also, the Louis is by far the most common fighter from the set to surface for sale, there's almost always one available somewhere on ebay. However, I've only seen a few Louis cards surface with the glossy white stock. There's also a separate Joe Louis card with printing on the front that was meant to be glued onto the set's album cover. Not sure how that was issued.
Okay, I didn't want to be the guy that spouts off information without backing it up so I went back and checked. The UTC cards are (at the earliest) a 1942 issue. The album for the set has pretty lengthy and detailed write-ups for each card in the set and Max Baer's entry makes multiple mentions to fights that occurred in 1941, even dating them as 1941. I haven't gone through each entry in the album because it's so frail and I don't want to damage it any further but at some point I'll sift through it and see if there are any other mentions of fights that could help pin down a definitive issue date.

Thanks for filling us in. I wonder how this set has gotten pegged for being six or seven years older than that - that's a large margin of error.
In my experience, PSA goes through waves of fact-checking on previously unslabbed items. Sometimes they'll slab anything with whatever the submitter provides while other times they won't slab something even though the submitter provides multiple hobby sources to validate the information. I can't really fault them. They're responsible for figuring out what everything is in every avenue of the hobby, while I have a hard enough time figuring out stuff just in my little niche of it. It's frustrating though when they slab something incorrectly because it's virtually impossible to right the ship at that point (ie. the 1967 "Figuritas Sport," which is actually 1967 Crack Campeones). That one's particularly frustrating because there's a tough Ali card in the set (as well as some other cards for IBHOFers that don't have many other card examples) and they'll probably continue to slab them that way going forward, which is a shame.
But, this is also a problem that's probably unique to areas like boxing/golf/soccer cards and that's not where PSA butters their bread. All things considered, they're doing a pretty good job.
Here's some old scans I took when I had the album out last. The spine is in delicate shape so I didn't do much interior because pressing it down made scary sounds that hurt the collecting part of my brain. I'm also adding a scan of a "common" UTC Joe Louis on the brown stock. I don't own a proper glossy white stock Louis but you can compare this to any other card from the set as I've never seen a non-Louis card from this set on this brown stock. I believe they're authentic, and most likely period, but had to be part of some subsequent printing or perhaps a cutout from a package or advertising piece. Hope this helps.
The Baer entry is on the page on the right, halfway down.
Wow, a signed boxing card from the era is off the hook! Congrats on this monster!!!

Oh man we should have talked before... That seller had quite a bit of cool panini cards. Some of the soccer players that I never heard of sold for decent money. Did you get the foreman or sugar ray rookies he was selling?
I picked up the Sugar Ray & the Tyson. But that Duran you got looked really nice. What'd you think about that '66 Clay Valida? I thought $250 was an ambitious # to start it at.
I don't know. It one if the cleanest examples of that card I've seen. If the back wasn't miscut I would say its def worth 250. I sold a psa 2 for about 150 that had pretty bad back damage. It's a tough card to find. The seller should slab if and let it sit on eBay with a high bin and except best offers IMO

I had a c1952 Rocky Marciano menko card, but I sold that about 14 months or so ago. I was poking around for the scans I had of it, but I can't find them offhand. I'll keep looking.
I saw a few phone cards of Tyson. I think they are neat, but they are expensive. I think it's because most of them can still be used in Japan so there is some monetary value associated with them still besides the subject or collectors value. Do you have the one advertising the Lasre Diesel Truck from Sapporo Toyota?
Yes, overpriced. There's a whole bunch of that product and I've seen a TON of unopened racks with Ali on top. I wouldn't spend more than $30 on one (and I don't think it will be hard for you at all to find one at that price point or lower with a little bit of patience).
Also, my apologies, I completely forgot I said I would post a scan of my Tyson phone card. I've got it labeled as 1990s, which tells me that's what the seller labeled it as and that time frame shouldn't be given much weight.
I think it's from 1989 or 1990. It has been used as you can tell by the small holes on the right side. I have seen three other similar ones of Tyson and there was one that was advertising the Tyson vs Douglas match which makes me believe they were all from the late 1980s/early 1990s. Tyson must have had a contract with Toyota dealerships in Japan and that is why all of them have Toyota adverstising. If I find a couple of the cards I'll post them.
