One box of 2009 Topps Heritage high purchased from my local card shop for $69. Was hoping for an auto but no such luck. The Branyan is numbered 485/560; the Pavano is 014/560. Pulled 7 other Chromes all numbered to 1960.

Next up a box of 2008 SP Auth football. I had sworn these boxes off but I couldn't help adding one to my order.

One box of 2008 SP Auth football purchased from my local card shop for $119.95. I had been planning to no longer open 2008 football since I wasn't getting very many good cards, glad I decided to change my mind with this box. Joe Flacco redemption auto patch; Jack Long auto patch #/999 and an SP Auth gold auto numbered 07/25 of Chris Ellis (whoever he is).

One box of 2009 Topps Heritage high numbers left to go.

One 1973 Topps football rack pack purchased from BBCE for $175. I have all the HOF RC in PSA 9 for my personal collection already but this seemed like a good chance to pull a Harris or Shell in high grade. The racks were in decent shape, really molded to the cards. There was some corner damage to several of the top and bottom cards in each rack very similar to cellos. No big hits in this first rack. Hoping for a HOF RC or two in the next.

One 1980/81 Topps basketball box purchased off ebay from Kruk cards for $979.99. I've bought plenty of unopened from Kruk cards in the past so was not overly concerned about authenticity of the box. Very happy with the results. Will look to buy another 80/81 box sometime soon. Three of the Bird/Magic rookies have a slight indentation on the bottom edge under the letter L in "Larry Bird". Not sure how that will affect the grades. Plan to send in 3 on my next sub to PSA.

Wow, is that normal for an 80/81 box? 4 Bird/Magics! Nice all around!

The dent in the Bird/Magic is pretty common. The last one I sub'ed with a dent got an 8. The card would have also been an 8 without the dent. No, it did not effect the grade.

I've opened probably a case worth of these boxes over the last 10 years and 4 Bird/Magic RCs is a lot for one box. I was very happy with the centering and corners. Two would have very legit shots at 9s depending on the indent. I have an 88 OPC Shanahan that got an 8 with a more pronounced indention and a Bird/Magic RC that got a 6 with a deeper longer indent than these cards have. Will be interesting to find out what PSA grades them. Cards are being shipped today to PSA under the $14 set registry special so should find out in a week or so.

One pack of 1974/75 OPC hockey purchased from BBCE for $110. I need every HOF RC in PSA 9 from this year. Sadly I didn't pull any of them. No submittable cards from this pack.

Next up 5 packs of 86/87 OPC hockey.

Five packs of 86/87 OPC hockey purchased from BBCE as part of group rip for $19.69 per pack. Didn't pull anything of note. Maybe one common will be sent off for grading after I check VCP to see if it would be worth sending.

Next up a box of 2001 Playoff Contenders football.

Next up six packs of 1977/78 Topps basketball. I still need a Dantley in PSA 9 for my PC.

I just looked through your entire thread, and I am still in shock at all the packs you've opened in the last year. Amazing luck on the Jordan's...not so great on the 79 opc.

A couple of things to add- I just opened a full mint box of 78-79 opc hockey, and there wasn't 10 cards above near mint in the entire 48 packs. Not one star card to sub and I am sure the box was legit.

With the 74-75 opc, I've found its about 1 in 100 cards are centered better than 55-45. If you ever get your PSA 9 HOF rookies from that set please share pics of them.

    Thanks again for sharing,

    Nathanael

How sure are you that your box was legit?

I purchased the 78-79 opc box from a good hobby friend who bought the box in 1979. Cards were all clean- I got the major rookies and the sequencing was typical opc.

78-79 opc centering is brutal, the rough cuts seem more pronounced, and the corners are sometimes not even there due to being ripped apart instead of cut. There are decently cut cards out there, but 90% of the cards that came out of packs were not nm-mt.
  • Options
    jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,948 ✭✭✭✭
From what I understand, PSA accepts the rough cut edges on OPC cards. Since it's the natural edge. Within reason I guess...
  • Options
    fergie23fergie23 Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭✭
I've found that for modern cards 70s OPC hockey is far and away the most difficult to find PSA 9 conditioned cards from unopened. I typically hope for one well centered card per pack and then you need to hope that the corners are good for that single card. Fortunately not too many people collect Hockey so the prices are not really reflective of how difficult true mint cards are to find.

Sub popped. Pretty annoyed with the Bird/Magic N8 designations. I will just sub these individually over the next couple of months. Not sure what I missed on the Bossy RB thought that was a pretty nice card. Other grades were about what I expected, was hoping the Jordan stickers were both at least 8s but I seem to do a terrible job on pre-grading Fleer basketball stickers in general.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

I keep track of what I spend. Almost everything I open ends up on ebay in the end. I have a spreadsheet for most of what has been sold on Ebay this year. I could probably put in some time and come up with amount spent on unopened, cards kept and cards sold. Unfortunately it would not be a pretty picture (probably negative $20k or so) but it would be interesting to know. Might be my project for tomorrow while watching football.

I have really enjoyed this thread Robb. It is also cool that you have been giving out a bunch of the cards you are not that interested and others are (like the Heritage box, minus hits) and the Young/Rice card you sent me like 7-8 months ago. Thanks again.

Keep up the great job and here is a little hope your next box has "The Hit."

Grand total spent on unopened for the year ~$30k. I think the two biggest changes I will make in 2010 are no boxes over $1500 (the 79 Topps Hockey and 75 Topps baseball boxes were both disappointments and both very pricey) and a lot less modern football. I spent enough on 2008 SP Auth football and 2008 Playoff Contenders to buy all the key rookies already graded.

Ebay sales were just over ~10k and I kept a handful of cards:

    PSA 9, PSA 8, PSA 8, PSA 5 1986 Jordan #57
    PSA 8 1986 Jordan Sticker
    PSA 8 1979 Topps Gretzky
    PSA 7 1979 Topps Gretzky
    PSA 9 1980 OPC Messier
2008 SP Auth Joe Flacco auto RC
2008 SP Auth Desean Jackson auto RC
2008 Leaf Limited Matt Ryan auto 13/50
3 1980 Bird/Magic RCs (N8 Miscut on first grading try)
A handful of PSA 9 1986 Fleer basketball commons for my self graded PSA 9 86 Fleer bb set

All in all I think I did the best with 1986 Fleer basketball unopened packs from a return standpoint (got incredibly lucky pulling 4 Jordan RCs). I got utterly crushed on my 1975 Topps baseball box, literally $3250 down the tubes with 2 or 3 PSA 9 commons to show for it. My 1979 Topps hockey wax box was also very poor, one PSA 7 Gretzky pulled. The 1985 OPC box was fun but the Lemieux's graded PSA 8 and PSA 7 so definitely a big money loser. The 1986 OPC box was also fun but the Roy's are 8s at best so another big money loser.

For 2010 I don't plan to buy quite as much unopened. I will buy a bunch of 2010 Heritage boxes, some 80s Football boxes (81,84,86) and early 80s Hockey packs. I plan to buy half a dozen 79 OPC hockey packs looking for the Gretzky, a box or two of 1980 Topps basketball, a box of 75 minis and hopefully a bunch of 1986 Fleer basketball packs. I will continue to post what I pull in this thread but a much larger percentage of my sports cards budget will be dedicated to completing my PSA 9 HOF RCs collection, hoping to find 71 Bradshaw, 71 Greene, 79 OPC Gretzky, 71 OPC Dryden, 70 Maravich this year.

Overall it was a pretty fun experiment.

    Robb,

It was very interesting to watch your rips over the year. Wishing you all the best with your 2010 rips and hoping that your ROI is a little better than last year.

    Have a HEALTHY NEW YEAR.

    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Thanks for the summation Robb - you are right on that 75 box - big blow to the ROI. You did pull some beauties though. Have you been selling the raw commons? There is sometimes more value there than you might think.
