<< <i>So sorry to hear about the cards rejected. Hopefully you can get your money back on those.

I'll check out the 48 Bowman set! Do you know how many you were able to obtain TTM? >>

    Reese,

I had three more rejected from the bulk submission - 1948 Leaf Luckman, 1988 Topps Chris Doleman and 1990 Pro Set Paul Tagliabue.

I obtained ~ 15 of the 1948 Bowman TTM. Several of those guys have died since. I think there are only ~ 10 of them still alive. Are you thinking of collecting the set?

    Greg,

I've thought about it a couple times. I have some nice cards to start with in Luckman, Baugh, McAfee, Pihos, Van Buren and Wojciechowicz although I don't like it as much as the 50, 51, 52, or 55 Bowman sets. If there are only 10 players left signing I might just want to knock them out while I still have time.

I did do all the TTMs with the 51 Bowman set and currently have 115/144 complete. I have been thinking about starting the TTM portion of the 52 Bowman set but I'm not all that thrilled about buying both the large and small cards. With some of those guys it would be a miracle to find one card, let alone both. Are you building both sets or just using a large or small card to fill the gaps and make 1 mixed set?

Oh man sorry to hear about the cards rejected especially the Luckman. He is so hard to find. Any chance on getting a refund?

No - I think the autograph is good, but you know how inconsistent PSA can be with Luckman autographs. I'll likely submit it again.

    Reese,

I have a 48 Bowman Trippi already slabbed that I will sell you. As for the 48 Bowman guys still alive, here is the list as of two years ago:

    JOE TERESHINSKI
    JOHN LUJACK
    STEVE VAN BUREN
    CHRIS IVERSEN
    JACK WILEY
    CHARLIE TRIPPI
    WHITEY WISTERT
    NEIL ARMSTRONG
    FRANK MAZNICKI
    JIM HARDY
    CECIL SOUDERS
    BILL MOORE
    PERRY MOSS
    FRED ENKE
    HARRY GILMER

A few guys have died since. I can help you figure out which ones are still signing if you want to move forward w/ the set. As for the 52 Bowman Small / Large, there are a decent number still alive. You know me - I collect both the small and large sets. There are a few options to find raw cards. E-Bay, obviously, plus there are a few websites including gfg.com that sell raw 52 Bowman cards. Let me know if you want to move forward w/ the set and I'll send you a list of the players still alive and signing.

FYI - PSA found my 55 Topps AA Otto Graham lying between two boxes in the sealing room! Thank god they found it.

Here's another one that showed up today. The autograph isn't great, so I'll likely upgrade in the future but for now it will fill the gap.

    Greg,

Very true. I had my hands on a really nice vintage signed Parker at one point, before the autograph RC boom and sold it for $40 image

Good luck with the sales! If anyone hasn't dealt with Greg before he is top notch!

Nice haul! I was a little disappointed last year at the Nationals and only found one signed HOF rc I needed for my set. I'm glad to see you already had success this year and its only day two. I really wish I could have gone this year and joined in on the fun.

Huggy! Great to meet you today!

I did some serious damage today at the show. I picked up some great cards today but I can't describe how excited I am about about one card. I will give you all a hint in that it's one of the most iconic, recognizable football cards ever created - and it's autographed! Scans coming tomorrow evening image

Huggy! Great to meet you today!

I did some serious damage today at the show. I picked up some great cards today but I can't describe how excited I am about about one card. I will give you all a hint in that it's one of the most iconic, recognizable football cards ever created - and it's autographed! Scans coming tomorrow evening image >>

I can't wait to see some scans. If I had to make a guess I would say you picked up a signed 76 Walter Payton.

Ok then its got to be a Johnny Unitas or Joe Namath or possibly the 4 hourseman card. If its not either of those than my last guess would be Red Grange Sports Kings.

I picked up an unpersonalized 57 Topps Bart starr rookie auto for 50 bucks and had it slabbed by psa for 40. I was pretty happy, does anyone know if I got a good deal on it? Card in poor-good condition but not an absolute beater.

You did very well considering I will be sending my RC in to his next private signing this month and the price for a flat is $170.

You may have gotten the deal of the show. An unsigned beater costs $100 and he charges $175 at shows. So, for $40 you did very, very well! Congrats

Alright boys! I spent all day Thursday at the show and just arrived back in Indy. I had a great time! As some of you know, I'm working on several autographed sets including 1950, 1951, 1952, 1955 Bowman sets, HOF RC Auto set, and my favorite the 1955 Topps All American Set.

Here is what I came home with:

    1950 Bowman Autos
    Jim White X2- D. 1987
    Ed Carr-D. 2011
    Tommy Thompson- D. 1989
    Knox Ramsey- D.2005

    1951 Bowman Autos
    Bulldog Turner D. 1998
    Ray Bray- D. 1996
    Jack Lininger- D. 2002
    Bob Hoernschemeyer- D. 1980

    image

    1951 Bowman Autos
    Sammy Baugh- D. 2008
    Ed Neal- D. 1984

    1952 Bowman Auto
    John Rapacz- D. 1991

Added a few HOF Rookie upgrades and a nice 55 Bowman Ollie Matson:

    image

Finally found a nice Bill Dudley 1948 Bowman RC as well as replaced a bunch of 55 All Americans I sold earlier this year:

Here is my new favorite card! I could not believe that not only does it exist, but that it hadn't been sold! In my five years of working on the set, I've never seen a Four Horseman autographed card before. This one is signed by Don Miller.
I am so excited and proud to add this to my collection.

    Jswieton,

You are good! I was lucky enough to pick up a Grange and Unitas last year. I will need to add a Namath at some point but I think for now it can wait.

So, with my National pickups this leaves me needing the following to have everyone from 1948-1959 portion of my set.

    1948 Leaf Leo Nomellini
    1948 Leaf Bobby Layne
1948 Leaf or Bowman Bob Waterfield
    1952 Bowman George Halas
    1952 Bowman Wayne Millner

Wow - I am blown away w/ the Miller...that is one of the top 5 coolest signed cards that I've seen. You picked up some great 55 Topps AA at the show....

From your list above, I have never seen a signed Waterfield or Millner - both of which I still need. When did you pick up a 48 Leaf Sammy Baugh? I didn't realize that you had him.

  • That Don Miller is awesome. That must have been a couple bills. He died in 1979. I want Vic Hanson 1955 Topps and have never seen one signed I would pay $500 for a Vic Hanson at least.

I have a HUGE addition to annouce!! I just picked up my first signed 1935 Chicle card - a Dutch Clark. Please see the scan below:

    image

As you can see, the card is in rough shape but the autograph is a solid 8+ quality. A board member approached me about a seller who had supposedly purchased the card from an 87 year old collector who obtained the card in person year ago. This is the second signed 35 Chicle Dutch Clark that I've seen - and I know of a third that supposedly exists - although I've never seen it. I'm now down to 13 - listed below.

    Cliff Battles 1935 National Chicle
    Turk Edwards 1935 National Chicle
    Benny Friedman 1955 Topps AA
    Clarke Hinkle 1935 National Chicle
Wayne Millner 1952 Bowman Small / Large
    Bronko Nagurski 1935 National Chicle
    Pete Pihos 1948 Bowman
Shannon Sharpe 1990 Action Packed Update
    Ken Strong 1935 National Chicle
Joe Stydahar 1952 Bowman Small / Large
    Jim Thorpe 1933 Sports Kings
    Steve Van Buren 1948 Leaf
    Bob Waterfield 1948 Leaf

    Thanks for looking.

Thanks guys. Here is the kicker - I was told that the Dutch Clark went unsold at the National (sorry Reese)!! I don't know the exact story, however a CU board member saw the card at the National and exchanged contact information with the seller. After the National the board member contacted the seller to ask whether the card had been sold. After realizing that it hadn't been sold, he contacted me to ask if I was interested (which was a rhetorical question...). I paid a bit more than I wanted, however I wanted to card.

I'm starting to think that this set will be possible to complete, however it will take a lot of effort (and a bit of luck) to flush some of the cards out of private collections where they may have been sitting for years (e.g. the Dutch Clark sold by its owner who is 87 years old).

    Frank,

I'll just have it slabbed as authentic. It's in such rough condition that I doubt PSA would even assign a grade to it.

Question to the board - What does everyone think about replacing the Action Packed rookie cards (Cortez Kennedy, Shannon Sharpe, Junior Seau) with their next best rookie cards? I really dislike the action packed cards (because of the uneven surface) and would really prefer the 1990 Score Supplemental for Kennedy and Seau and 1991 Bowman/Pacifc/Topps (we would have to decide which one) for Sharpe. Just so that everyone knows - this would actually hurt me because I don't have any of the cards that I've suggested already signed and would have to remove the Seau and Kenndy cards from my sets (Future HOF rookie and HOF rookie).

Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks.
