I was your under bidder on that one, Reese. Congrats on the addition!
  • Nice card. The seller is also a good one as well. You don't see too many of those 1948 George Connor signed.

Thanks! I've always been happy with my purchases from Curtis. I've never had any problems passing any of his cards through PSA/DNA.

  • Bought from him and sold to him. He has some awesome Autograph Football Cards that I wish I had. Practically every deceased significant football player. I am still ticked off about losing a 1965 Topps Signed Tom Sestak of the Buffalo Bills. I have not seen one since.

<< <i>Finally a new addition! The centering drives me nuts on these 48 Leafs but it's another tough one to knock off the list so I'll take what I can get!

Nice pickup Reese - of course I was watching that auction image My Connor is also pretty rough (yours is in better shape), however it is a tough card to find - which I still don't understand why. The card isn't a short print and Connor was a great signer until he died in 2003. The cards get tougher and tougher to find as your want list dwindles down.

I have two new additions that I would like to share:

Signed 1972 Rayfield Wright that I had signed TTM through his foundation for a $20 donation:

    image

The signature isn't the best, however he has a somewhat sloppy signature. I had a rc signed several years back and it was terribly smeared. I ended up selling it for less than the price of the card (which isn't cheap!).

My other addition was Fred Biletnikoff which a SCN board member had signed for me at the Sun Times show. It turned out great.

    image

The only other cards that I have outstanding are Steve Young and Marshall Faulk - obth if which will be signed later this month.

Please post scans of your rookie cards from the HOF class of 2012! I'll post mine soon...

More great additions Greg! Rayfield is surprisingly tough. I haven't seen him do many shows. The Biletnikoff is very nice as well. He really has a great signature!

I'm getting ready to send off an order to PSA/DNA which included the Len Ford, Ernie Nevers, Jack Christiansen, Paul Brown, and a number of other HOF RCs and signed cards from 1948-1955 Bowman sets.

For the Ford, any chance it would pull a grade higher than a 2 or 3 or should I just go with the "authentic" grade?

I'd always go with a number, even if it's only a 1. I've found many times when I sell duplicates that if it's "authentic" people want to beat you down over whether it's modified, altered, trimmed, etc. They don't seem to understand that a lot of autograph collectors just get them graded "authentic" by choice, not because there are defects.

    Reese,

I agree w/ Mike....always try to have a grade assigned even if the card is in rough condition. Worst case scenario, they slab as authentic.

    Reese,

I didn't go after the Bowman Pihos aggressively because of the rough shape that it was in. Plus, at the time, I was hoping that PSA would let us substitute other rookie cards. I have a Bowman Van Buren rc and a Leaf Pihos rc....but can't add them because those cards aren't part of the set composite. The 48 Bowman cards are tough to find signed, however I will eventually find one.

  • Rayfield IS very tough. I got Rayfield in March 2006 at the Chicago Sun Times Show on a mini helmet a month after he was elected to the Hall of Fame. He hasn't been back since.

    Greg,

I'm curious why is the Pihos Bowman used for the set instead of the Leaf? It seems when we have players in both the Bowman and Leaf sets, we've always use the Leaf right?

The Pihos and Turner rookie cards are short prints in the Bowman set (all numbers divisible by 3) and are thus more valuable than their Leaf rookie cards - which are both low numbers (in the 1948 Leaf set cards 50 to 98 are considered short printed and are very expensive).

I finally added another card last week - a signed 1995 SP Curtis Martin. I was going to get a rookie card signed at an upcoming show - but I found this one on E-Bay for $75 dlvd - which was reasonable when compared to his show signing fee.

    image

I also purchased a 1952 Bowman Small Tom Fears - which cost me only $20 after using my E-Bay Bucks.

    image

My other big purchase was a card that I have been searching for for the better part of the past two years - a signed 1961 Fleer Don Meredith. Although Meredith isn't a HOF candidate, he was a star of his era and went on to enjoy a successful broadcasting career. I'll post a scan when I receive the card.

    Hope everyone is doing well.

  • Dandy Don 1961 Fleer signed is a great card. That is a very nice Tom Fears for the price.
  • Is this thread applied to just signed rookie cards? Or is it anything Hall of Fame related? I got Dermontti Dawson back a week ago but it isn't his rookie.

    Hey guys -

I requested the following changes for the Future HOF and Future HOF rookie card sets:

    Remove:
    Jack Butler
    Curtis Martin
    Dermontti Dawson
    Willie Roaf
    Chris Doleman
    Cortez Kennedy

    Add:
2004 SP AUTHENTIC JARED ALLEN 101
2004 TOPPS CHROME ELI MANNING 205
2005 TOPPS CHROME DEMARCUS WARE 213

The changes are consistent w/ the changes to the non-autographed future HOF modern and senior sets. Are there any non-players (owners, coaches, ect...) that we should add?

I just won a signed 1960 Fleer Hank Stram on E-Bay!

    Hank Stram

I'm now down to 20 signed HOF rc to complete the set. For the life of me, I can't figure out why it has taken me so long to find a signed Stram rc. He was a great signer when alive and I've seen 10 signed 1960 Fleer Sid Gillman cards for every Hank Stram - even though they both died around the same time and both were great signers for years. Go figure. Here is my updated want list if anyone can help:

    Cliff Battles 1935 National Chicle
    Buck Buchanan 1964 Topps
    Dutch Clark 1935 National Chicle
    Al Davis 1990 Pro Set

Do you know if any of the 1935 Chicle cards exist, Greg? I haven't seen any for any of the players in the entire set of National Chicle on ebay or elsewhere. There also aren't any in the pop reports, at least for red flips. NFL HOF rookie autos have been doing really well lately, at least some of the prices I've been following lately have been very strong.
  • gregm13gregm13 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭
I've personally seen a signed 1935 Chicle Dutch Clark and I know someone who claims to have 3 signed 35 Chicles - Turk Edwards, Dutch Clark (a different one than the one I saw) and Clarke Hinkle. I have no doubt that all of the cards that I need are possible - although there may only be a handful in existence.

I went through the future HOF auto and rookie auto sets and requested the guys who were recently elected to be removed and to add the following three players:

2004 SP AUTHENTIC JARED ALLEN 101

2004 TOPPS CHROME ELI MANNING 205

2005 TOPPS CHROME DEMARCUS WARE 213

From what I could tell, these were the only three additions to the future HOF - Modern set and there were no changes (besides removing Jack Butler) to the Future HOF - Senior set.

I think that Gayle will send out a poll - so please respond when you have a chance.

For once, I am speechless.....I'm without speech. Today, a long time dealer contacted me about 4 cards that I needed for my set - and offered me a fantastic price that we agreed to. So, without further delay - I have added signed rookie cards of Leo Nomellini, Buck Buchanan, Em Tunnell and Bob Hayes. I don't have a scan of the Hayes - but will scan all 4 when I receive them later this week. I'm now down to 16 and hopefully 15 after I get my Deion Sanders signed next month at the Houston show.

This thread has been awfully quiet lately.... I finally received the 4 rookie cards that I purchased recently that I earlier posted scans of (except the Hayes) plus I received my 1984 Topps USFL card of Steve Young back from a recent signing at it turned out wonderful! The only other upcoming additions I have are Deion Sanders (at upcoming show), Ed Sabol (purchase from Justin) and Al Davis (trade with Jay).

I was sad to hear that Justin is selling his collection, but I wish him the best w/ the upcoming events in his life (getting married, buying his first house).

    Here are the scans:

Greg, the inscription read Roh 01 Definantly Ring of Honor 01' as thats when he had the honor of being inducted. A truly rare inscription as he passed away just a year later, congrats on those awesome cards! (:

Thank you very much - that makes sense and is consistent with the seller's comment that the card was signed right before Bullet Bob died.

    Reese,

The signature looks great on that card - congrats! Len Ford is definately one of the top 10 hardest signed NFL HOF rc...so that is a HUGE addition for your set. Did everything else pass authentication that you submitted?

2 new additions to announce (but no scans yet). Jay Radke and I traded my 1992 Pro Line Al Davis for his 1990 Pro Set Al Davis (thank you Jay!) plus I bought a 2011 Panini signed Ed Sabol from Justin who unfortanately is selling off his collection. Additionally, I am getting a Deion Sanders signed at the Houston show this weekend - which leaves me with 14 more cards to complete the set:

    Here is my want list:

    Cliff Battles 1935 National Chicle
    Dutch Clark 1935 National Chicle
    Turk Edwards 1935 National Chicle
    Benny Friedman 1955 Topps AA
    Clarke Hinkle 1935 National Chicle
Wayne Millner 1952 Bowman Small / Large
    Bronko Nagurski 1935 National Chicle
    Pete Pihos 1948 Bowman
Shannon Sharpe 1990 Action Packed Update
    Ken Strong 1935 National Chicle
Joe Stydahar 1952 Bowman Small / Large
    Jim Thorpe 1933 Sports Kings
    Steve Van Buren 1948 Leaf
    Bob Waterfield 1948 Leaf

The next 3 easiest to find will be the Shannon Sharpe, Pete Pihos (I just missed buying Justin's) and Steve Van Buren. The remaining 11 will be nearly impossible to find - although I have seen examples of Clark, Friedman, Millner and Stydahar.

So - who picked up what from Justin's collection?

From Justin's collection I was able to add another Doug Atkins RC to my collection. I struggled so much to find this card I couldn't pass it up!
    image

I also snagged a couple other cards for my my 1950 and 1951 Bowman Auto Sets.

First up is a 1950 Bowman Mac Speedie RC Auto. His name has been thrown around in the past as a possible senior candidate for the HOF. This is only the second signed 1950 Bowman I've seen.

My next addition is for my 1951 Bowman set. This is possibly one of the toughest cards in the set to obtain. Wimberly passed away in 1976. A few years a ago a near complete 1951 Bowman Autograph set was put up for sale by Mastro Auctions that was missing 5 cards. Wimberly was missing from the set.

    Greg,

I'm still waiting on the results of the rest of my submission. The Ford had to be submitted under a different service because of the price. My order was received on the May 2, logged on May 17th and I think was a 15 or 20 day turnaround time estimate. I'm hoping any day now they will pop.

Reese that Ford is amazing WTG!
  • Wow amazing thread. I would love to speak sometime with so of you experienced autograph collectors. I purchased one of the largest signed sportscard collections back in early 2011 and finally have gotten the HOFers, deceased, tough signers separated for PSA DNA. I have noticed lately that alot of the dealers on ebay who sell these are getting good prices if holdered. I would love to hear opinions on this. You can email me privately at dduncanvintage@aol.com. I would love to hear some advice on this stuff. I have not been an autograph collector in years past, but acquiring this amazing collection has me wnating to move in this direction.

Reese- Amazing collection and alot of hard work you must have put into it.

    Jason
