    All,

As I continue to sell my graded, non-autographed card collection I'm reinvesting back into my autographed card collection. Below are the cards that I just purchased from a long time collector who is slowly selling off his collection. With the addition of these cards, I have 203 / 243 possible signed HOF rc and have a deal with another collector to buy 11 further cards that I need. When all the dust settles, I will need less than 30 cards...

    Enjoy the scans!

    Greg M.

A couple of other odds and ends that I wanted to post. The first two are auto'd rc of the senior HOF finalists for 2011 - Dick Stanfel and Jack Butler. Both are still alive and sign TTM. Jack Butler will often personalize, which is something to consider if you send him an autograph request.

    image

The other two I bought recently. I've always wanted a Paterno signed card - and the George Connor is a 1949 Leaf (unfortunately, not his rc).

    Enjoy!

Very Nice Cards Especially O.J. and Ernie Nevers. The 1955 All-American Nevers must have cost a good coin.

I love the Swann. That is a difficult card to find signed since he won't sign it anymore.

At the Chantilly show in June, Swann wouldn't sign my rc at his premium item price of $225. Crazy...huh?

I've seen a lot more Swann than Art Monk signed RC's around. That's the one that got my attention.

It's because the 1975 Topps set wasn't licensed by the NFL. There were several years during the 1970's where Topps didn't obtain an NFL license. If you notice, for instance on the 1975 Topps cards, all of the logos have been airbrushed out.

There are several players, Swann included, who feel cheated because they were never compensated for use of their image on a card. How that correlates to Swann not wanting to sign the card is beyond me. For $175 to $225 per auto, he is being well compensated for scribbling his name on a piece of cardboard.

As far back as I can remember, Monk won't sign his rc. The story I was told was that he has a strange notion that by signing the card, it will increase the value of the card by a greater amount that he was paid to sign it. I have no idea where he gathered his market data to support his notion, but several dealers have been unable to convince him otherwise.

The card that I purchased was a vintage signature - likely signed sometime in the early/mid 80's.

The irony is that back than, I believe the players received a blanket contract fee from Topps. It was something like $500-$600. Now I believe it's over $2000. The point being, at an average of $200 per signature, Swann would be compensated waaayy more by signing than not.

    Frank,

That makes more sense - because Swann was complaining about not receiving royalties. So - it's not that he wasn't paid - it's just that he wasn't paid ENOUGH. To your point, my offer to pay the premium price of $225 vs. the standard flat price of $175 should have compensated him for any royalty he felt was due to him.

Whatever - I just bought a signed Swann rc - so it's a moot point image

Greg, outstanding additions! The Nevers is amazing and actually the first 55 I've seen signed by him. I'm very jealous!

I got this one back in the mail today. It took me such a long time to find a nice looking card. I believe this was a PSA 5 or 6, but the centering is what caught my eye. It took about a month, but came with an additional signed Topps HOF card and a nice index card with note thanking me for my donation. Here is addition #148-Billy Shaw

Nice Billy Shaw, Reese! I had a very funny conversation with Rob, the owner of Burbank Sportscards, today. I mentioned that I lost an eBay auction on a 63 Lance Alworth in G-VG shape for a $93 snipe. He actually wasn't surprised. I asked if he could put one aside for me if he buys one in a collection. He said that it always amazes him that he never gets 62 or 63 Fleer Football in bad-mediocre shape. He always find them (on the rare occasions they do come in) in NM or better shape. Unfortunately he didn't have an explanation why.

    Reese,

Nice pickups on the Moon and Shaw...very nice additions. I especially like the Shaw - his 62 Fleer rc is TOUGH to find in any condition.

I have two new additions to post - both were obtained TTM. The first is Bud Grant. Although we consider the 2005 UD Legends card as his rc, his first card released was in the 1954 Blue Ribbon Tea CFL set. Bud Grant's 1954 Blue Ribbon Tea card is VERY tough to find in any condition and is very expensive. I found a nice copy for a reasonable price and sent it TTM along w/ a donation of $25. I think that it turned out great! I also added a signed rc of Ken "The Snake" Stabler. He nicely signed his 1973 Topps rc in black sharpie for a $10 donation to his charity.

    Thanks for looking!

Today I got this back from the GT Sports signing. Marshall is my favorite player of all time and some of you know that for my college internship I worked at his foundation. I couldn't be happier with how this turned out. Marshall is truely a class act and I was so excited for him when he got the nod for the HOF!

    Reese,

Very cool Marshall Faulk - I loved watching him play for the Colts and Rams. I remember one game when he was w/ the Rams - where he ran a seam route up the middle and Kurt Warner hit him in stride and MF outran the mis-matched LB into the endzone.

    Thanks for sharing.

A long time collector is liquidating a vast majority of his signed card collection and I bought 13 cards from him. 11 are scanned below and the other two I will scan and post later. After adding these cards, I need 31 cards to complete the NFL HOF signed rc collection. I'm so close, yet so far (since many of the remaining signed cards I need are nearly impossible to find).

    Enjoy!

Nice haul Greg! I'm in love with the Layne and Christiansen! The Grange is a huge score and probably my favorite signed HOF rc in my collection.

I've been envious of your Red Grange...so I'm glad to finally add one to my collection. I think the nicest signature of the bunch is on the Bobby Layne rc. Layne often signed with a felt tip pen (which generally doesn't look good on vintage cards), so I'm thrilled my rc was signed w/ a ball point pen.

I only need 31 signed rc to complete the set. Please let me know if anyone can help w/ any of the cards that I need. I plan on getting the living guys on my list at upcoming signings.

People have discussed before whether we should start a Future HOF signed rc set. We already have a future HOF set, for which you can add any card of the future HOFers. However, I've taken that list and pared it down to only the players and added the rookie cards from the future HOF (unsigned) Modern and Senior sets on the PSA registry. I have listed the cards below (and continue to my next post):

I have also compiled a list of the coaches/contributors and researched what their rookie card would be. Please look over the list and let me know what you think. Also, we should hold a vote on which card to choose for Future HOFers with multiple cards issued in their "rookie season".

One more thing - someone brought to my attention that the rookie card for Bud Grant should be his 1995 ENOR card. If everyone agrees, I'll submit a change request to Cosetta.

I have a few more additions that I would like to share with everyone. Included in my score was a Jim Thorpe cut auto'd card! It was the best looking cut that I've seen - nicely centered with a solid, ink pen signature. Enjoy!

Can someone please tell me why you can't use the 1961 Topps cards for these registries? I can understand that some people like the Fleer ones better but the 61 Topps Jim Otto is so much more fun than the Fleer. I really think you need to be able to use both.

We followed the card chosen for the HOF rc set, which is determined based on value (I believe the PSA 8 value for each card was compared, and the more expensive was chosen).

When I originally requested the set, I wanted the HOF auto rc to have more flexibility than the HOF rc set - i.e. that you could add multiple cards to a slot. PSA vetoed that idea and used the cards in the HOF rc set for the HOF auto rc set.

    Hope that helps.

Looks like a good list to me. I don't have much of a preference with specific cards. I like the 1992 Packers Police cards for Holmgren and Wolf though.

I'm not sure if the coach cards need to be from when they're coaching or when they're playing. I like the ones from when they're playing. I could see an argument either way and would accept both in any sort of comprehensive list.

For example for Schottenheimer I like his 1971 Topps card to the 1989 ProSet.

As for Vito's comment. I like the Topps card for Otto as well. I have about 70 signed football HOF RC's, but probably won't participate in the registry set if there's no flexibility. IMO it's ridiculous to want just the highest $ card, when there are several Rookies.

PSA seems inconsistent here. Consider the parallel registry set for baseball.

Here you're allowed options on several cards, for example:
    1948 LEAF 120 OR 1949 BOWMAN 26 GEORGE KELL

One more thing, is the fleer Otto at 8 even more expensive? I don't have VCP but I see a few listed on ebay now:
    Fleer 109 OBO
    Topps 85 BIN
    Topps 85 Auction in progress

Thanks for reminding me that 1971 Topps is Schottenheimer's true rookie card. I'll make that change. As for your other comment, I have no problem requesting that the HOF auto rc and future HOF rc sets allow multiple cards for certain players. The problem we run into is with the modern players. For instance, should we allow ANY rc for Peyton Manning or just his SP rc? I don't personally think we should allow ANY rc because doing so would ruin the uniformity of the set. So my question to you is how would allowing two different cards for Jim Otto impact the selection of rookie cards for newer players? I personally think that adding multiple cards for older players lessens the argument for newer players as to which cards can be selected for the set.

    Thoughts?

As for the rookie cards of the future HOFers, please see my proposal below:
