I have one thing to say to that, as the fans in Fenway chanted all weekend - "Where is Roger?" "Where is Roger?" >>

  • Very disappointed w/ last night's game. After the awesome series against Boston, with as much momentuim as e've had all season, we turn in this outting? Was looking for big things from Delsalvo, I remember his first start he did great thru 7, but the bullpen blew the lead. Anyway, he just wasn't gettin' it done, nor were the numerous clowns they brought in after him. And as far as the almost-rally in the 9th, *sigh* why do I even watch that chit?? Just as I had resigned myself to loosing the game, and there they go, stiring up a flaint glimmer of hope....all to be undone by who?? Jeter. *sigh* Looks like it really is gonna be a long season fellas.

  • The Yankees have made up 4 games in 6 days. At this rate the Yankees will be in 1st place in a little over 2 weeks.

I really like how the Yankees have played the last couple of days. Offense looks like they are what they are expected to be. Starting pitching is coming around quite nicely. Our big hole is the middle relief. I want to turn the TV every time they come in. Let's hope this will be a wave they can continue to ride as long as something can be done about that middle relief.
  • Abreu, Cano, and Melky getting hot. Melky is superb in CF with that rocket arm of his. Now that both Sheffield and Abreu are getting hot who would the Yankees have been better off with? Sheffield has 14 dingers (2 tonight) and has been on fire lately.

Nah, I wouldnt want Sheffield back. Who knew Abreu would have all the problems at the plate? It's a first for him. If he starts hitting like he always has then I am more to have him right where he is.

I do know I'll be happy when Giambi is gone and that distraction is out of the Yankees clubhouse. Im not saying I dont like Giambi just the distractions.
  • Well I kind of agree as Sheffield can be a trouble maker at times. If Abreu continues to improve and ends up with his typical .400+ OBP it will be great. One interesting aside though, supposedly Abreu is friendlly with Ozzie Guillen and there are rumors floating around Jermaine Dye for Bobby Abreu.

I heard that same thing in regards to Abreu and Dye but apparently it was mentioned and was quickly dropped. Guess neither side were that interested in the trade.

He is gone for at least 2 months and they have talked about sitting him for the entire season because they dont want him coming back with a weak hamstring or ankle. They are certainly using kid gloves with him and cant say I blame them!

I was in California for a wedding last weekend, staying with a Red Sox fan. We watched the Sunday night game, and after the Yankees had a signature game against Boston, I told the poor schmuck that this game was the Yankees becoming the Yankees again, and that 1978 Part Two was a very real possibility. Nothing since has changed...

Hate to say it since I detest them, but the swagger is back, the clutch performances and late-inning heroics are back, and at this point I wouldn't even think of betting against them to make the playoffs or even win the division.
  • The old man looked pretty good today. 7 K's

5 in a row, 7 out of 9. If the Yankees keep winning they wouldn't have to worry about the Red Sox.

If we can finish off the Pirates tomorrow then we may have the beginings of a good turn around here. The key is to not worry about the Boston Red Sox but just keep winning games and everything will take care of itself whether it be catching the Sox or getting in very good position for a wild card run.

I thought Clemens was finished pitching against minor league teams.
    image
  • yankeeno7yankeeno7 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭
Today was a great reason why it was good that Clemens didnt pitch against the Red Sox or any other formidable team. Leg strength is not completely there and that was proven by the velocity of his fastball. We know that will get better as his legs and groin injury strengthen. He pitched well nonetheless. As good as any pitcher could be expected for his first game of the season.

If Clemens provides pitching that gives the Yankees 10 wins (whether he gets the decision or not) that could be the edge of winning the wild card and who knows, maybe even the division (no matter how far away it looks right now). Those could be wins the Yanks may not have gotten with a young arm. Time will tell if/how much Clemens pitching will impact the Yankees.

We still need two things very very much....First, Mussina to be Mussina. Don't know what happened to his velocity but hopefully everything returns. Second and more importantly, that middle relief needs to bring it up a FEW notches! The Yanks find those things and they will be back in contention. It's nice to see some of those bats come to life (Abreu, Cano, Cabrera, Damon) and the Yanks doing what it takes to win.

    Dan.....

I assume that your reference to those minor league teams on the west coast is in jest? I will take the A's pitching (team ERA 3.21) over the Yankees any day of the week. The A's, Angels and now with the Mariners making some noise (beating a very good team in San Diego), the AL West is far from minor league. I see the Angels being in the playoffs, being very tough to beat, and if the Yankees make it (which I think they will) and play the Angels, I would take the Angels in that series. The Yankees would not beat the Angels. BTW, the entire world does not evolve around the Yankees and Red Sox, although the media certainly seems to make it seem that way. image

Dan - the A's do indeed have a quality pitching staff, and a tough team overall. The Pirates just flat out stink. They are at the very bottom of the entire league in just about every offensive category.

But, if you guys want to go crazy about The Fat Guy needing 108 pitches over 6 innings to beat them, then go right ahead. Have a party!

You know better then that Jerry. A win is a win is a win and if the Sox and Pirates propell the Yankees to playing alot better baseball then thats fine by me. As of now, the Yanks have shaved 4 games off of that huge Sox lead in less then two weeks. I bet you that by the end of August things will be interesting image

Feel free to do the countdown on the Bosox thread though!
  • Dear Yankee Fans,

All I had been hearing from my Mets and Red Sox buddies when the Yankees were 14 1/2 games out are comments like "how the Yankees would have to play .650 if the Red Sox just played .525 ball". Well guess what? Over the last 10 game the Yankees have been playing .800 ball while the Sox .400. When a team puts together a winning streak like the Yankees have they can make up games very fast. It is a very long season. The Red Sox had a chance to bury the Yankees at 14 1/2 games out but they didn't. 2 years ago the Red Sox had a 9 1/2 game lead in June and the Yankees won the AL East.

    The Yankees are back.

I might add, l if I remember correctly, last year the Red Sox looked unstoppable and were 18 or 19 games above .500. The Yankees then went into Fenway and won 5 straight. The Red Sox fell apart after that and wound up in 3rd behind Toronto.

Well you got your wish but the Yankees beat last year's NL Cy Young winner with 4 runs. No cheapy here. The Yankees 7 game win streak is no fluke.

I don't like to butt in on the Yankees thread, but I have to give credit where it's due. It's been an impressive win streak for sure and I wanted to congratulate you guys on making it to .500. Only 5 1/2 out in the Wild Card race. That's nothing with this much time left.

I think that Sunday night game against Boston was the turning point.

Not just that they won that game, but because how they won that game was a "signature" Yankees win -- trailing for much of the game, coming back from the dead, late inning heroics and effective work from Rivera. That has been their trademark for much of the last dozen years, and we'd seen precious little of it this season until that game. Against the Sox, no less.

Watching that game, I had the feeling that was going to be the turning point for the Yankees' season -- and nothing since has convinced me otherwise. I remember thinking: "uh-oh, here they come."

  • <<Yea 5 1/2 games is not much at all for a wild card spot. You guys are playing well, I will tip my hat to you>>

perkdog, thanks for complimenting my team. I have higher expectations than the Wild Card though. If the Yankees could knock 5 games off of the Red Sox lead in 2 weeks I see no reason that they can not better the Red Sox by 10 games by the end of September. image

This is amazing really. What we are looking at is just a two or three game separation before this is a bonafide race again. And all this happened in 15 days or so. Not that the Yankees will just steamroll past the Sox but what is beginning to happen should be a lesson for those who get too giddy in April and May. I say it every year, it is proven in one way or another around the league every year ..... its a LONG season.
