Let me give credit where credit is due, you guys are playing amazing baseball right now. I for one NEVER stated we had things wrapped up in May, I did however enjoy your misery with your slow start though, we had an oppurtunity to put you guys away for good IMO but with the lore of Red Sox history we cannot help but make things interesting if not painful. I love my Sox but at this point if we let our 81/2 game lead melt away then screw 'em we deserve every bit of jeers thrown our way and thats that.

Editted to add.. Actually I did say we would win the division and I still stand by that. At this point though I may be eating my words...

perk - don't forget, the Yanks have a $228 Million dollar team, and you couldn't expect them to be 15 games back all season long (though, that would have been very enjoyable). Even if they continued to lose, they would have just picked up Mark Texiera, Todd Helton, or someone like that to ensure some wins. I think we will still come out on top because of superior pitching, and a better team assembled from top to bottom, but the Yanks aren't going away. They are going to fight for that wild card all season long.

Again again again again....proven over and over and over and over again....payroll doesnt mean squat. That is now a proven FACT. Yankees could spend 5 billion a season and it doesnt mean they are going to win. Team still has to play and win. So....yaaaaaawwwwwwwnnnnnn....its an old, tired arguement that holds no water.
The fact is that the TEAM is playing well. Pitching has been solid and starters giving the bullpen a lot more NEEDED rest.
Now stop your whinin' cuz the Yanks are making a move! image
  • yankeeno7yankeeno7 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭
And lets not forget to mention that the Bosox would be doing the SAME EXACT THING if in the position by going after Helton, Texieria, or whoever. And we all know the ONLY reason they havent yet is because Youkalis is having an excellent (over-achieving) year. We already know that there was interest of Helton by the Bosox.
  • Funny how the tired "Yeah, but they got the biggest payroll" arguement always comes from fans of the team with the 2nd highest payroll lol. *sigh*

It's also comical that the excuses and whining are starting already - wait until we actually catch them. Another great start for Pettitte.

Come Monday it may be a horse race, as I do not see the Mets taking a game this weekend as crappy as they are playing.

    Jerry,

The payroll debate is old and stale. Like rock hard bagels. Your Red Sox out spend every team in the majors besides the Yankees. Do you care to include the outrageous "bid" it took to get D-Mat? Of course not, but if it was the Yankees who were dumb enough to outspend some entire teams yearly payroll just for the right to talk to a guy you would be more then happy to point it out.

Nice two out of three vs the Mets and the Yanks are now 14-3 in the last 17. I like the way the Yanks are playing. Wang was great tonight and is pitching very well every time out. There is soooooo much season left. In a flash we have gone from 8 under .500 to 3 over. Lets keep it upimage

  • ARods playing like the future HOF he will be. He has close to 500 HR's, how old is he now. He is hitting the ball farther now which gives some credibility to the opinion that the great players hit their prime in early to mid 30s. He is beginning to follow in the great slugger foot steps of Ruth, and Mantle. Bostons still the team they need to beat though.

This is amazing really. What we are looking at is just a two or three game separation before this is a bonafide race again. And all this happened in 15 days or so. Not that the Yankees will just steamroll past the Sox but what is beginning to happen should be a lesson for those who get too giddy in April and May. I say it every year, it is proven in one way or another around the league every year ..... its a LONG season.

and for the Yanks it'll be getting longer before it gets shorter. the hill they have to climb is a bit too steep for even the great individual players they have and i feel confident that a better team will top them easily. it is, after all, a team game and the Yanks just don't have a very good team this year. in the AL i see them as being outplayed by at least Boston, Cleveland, Detroit and LA with teams like Minnesota and Oakland being close to them. everyone should do OK if they don't get caught up in the mystique of the pinstripes and if Steinmuncher doesn't go on a spending spree.

in a word, the Yanks are ToasT.
  • BoopottsBoopotts Posts: 6,784 ✭✭
Well, it looks like the worst is behind us die hard Yankee fans. The team is finally coming together-- after tonight we're only 11 behind the Red Sox, and only 8.5 out of the wild card.

Those numbers sound daunting, but consider what we have going for us. First, we play in the most historically resonant stadium in all of MLB. The baseball gods luuuuuuve The House That Ruth Built. So I figure that's good for about 3 games. Secondly, we have Derek Jeter. Can any team go on a prolonged losing streak with a shortstop that handsome? I think not. Just having is cute butt shaking around the infield ought to be good for another 4 games right there.

Let's see, what else... Oh! I know. We have that quaint 'haircut' rule too. No ManRams on this roster! Just a bunch of well groomed young men trying to make an honest buck. Give us another 2 games because of those damn fine haircuts. Let's keep those tresses high and tight, boys!

So, that's 9 games because of the intangibles. Right there we've got the wildcard locked up, so all we need is another 2.5 games in baseball karma to overtake the despised Red Sox. If God is gay then we know he's an A-Rod fan, and having The Lord on our side should be enough to propel us to the Fall Classic, but so little is known about the Allmighty's sexual persuasions that we can't take that to the bank... But wait! Did someone say bank? Now THERE'S an idea. If we're still languishing in third place by mid July we'll just work a trade for Bobby Abreu, and offer Clemens some unholy sum of cash-- maybe around $28,000,000 per year, pro rated of course-- to haul his fat ass out of retirement and take the bump every fifth day. With THOSE two pieces in place I don't see how we can lose!!

Later Red Sox! Better luck in '08!

  • Good news is the yanks won today. Bad news, the Sox's bats woke up from their weekend hangover and got to work.

Just think, the Sox are 50-31, and Manny and Ortiz have been mediocre all year.

I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed - but not at all surprised - by how quickly Yankee fans around here abandoned this thread. Not much fun to be a fan of a team that's 1,000 games out of first place, is it? And they wonder when people say that most Yankee fans are "fair-weathered". This about proves it.

Even the Royals fans haven't given up hope yet!

A few days? Your sense of time is about as accurate as a Kei Igawa curveball. Try a few weeks. The last Yankee fan to post on this thread and that was back on June 17th.

If it's true that you guys haven't abandoned your team, please explain the sudden silence on the thread and why that silence coincided with the end of the Yankees hot streak?
  • It's common knowledge most yankee 'fans' on this board are as fair-weathered as they come. It's pretty comical to see them go from 'rabid' fan to ghost. It's pretty funny to see what so many have been saying for so long about those yankee fans on these boards come to light - that, when times get tough, they disappear.

  • perkdogperkdog Posts: 31,022 ✭✭✭✭✭
Its because most Yankee fans ( NOT ALL!) are a bunch of spoiled brats, they expect to steamroll the regular season with their so-called standards of excellence and deflect barbs at their huge spending on the best free agent available every year. Well the Red Sox have finnally learned that they needed to take on a Yankee type mentality and now we are just as competitive and the standings show. We do have alot of baseball left so I am sure some decent Yankee fans will be around in the second half..

    Hi Axtell,

I'm just not getting it, how does posting on a message board mean you're a fan (or not a fan for that matter)? Answer, it doesn't. If I never post here again, does that mean I'm not a Yankee fan? As far as disappearing when times get though, if that was the case i'd have flown the coop in 1990.

I get where you're coming from, but I think you're missing the point . . . over the last couple months we've been having a healthy dialogue with all the Yankee fans saying that there was plenty of time left and the Red Sox fans should crown themselves AL East champs just yet. The dialogue escalated when the Yankees were winning and we were seeing pictures of cassette tapes entitled "Red Sox Blow It Again" . . . and now that the Yankees have cooled off all the Yankee fans and their words of wisdom and experience have dried up.

You can still be a fan and not post on this board, but only posting when times are good makes it look like the people that had been posting on a regular basis have given up interest in this season now that the Yankees appear to have stalled. In my eyes, there's a loss of credibility when you can only warn us Sox fans about over-confidence when you yourself are feeling confident.

I dont know about anyone else but its frustration. I have no problem admitting that. I can dictate conversations with friends if you would like to read those discussions, CTSox LOL Dont think that because there is no board posting that Yankee fans are fair weather or have deserted their team. Not only that, I dont think 7 or 8 Yankees fans not posting to this board speaks for all Yanks fans out there...thats a bit ridiculous. And not only that, dont think that we dont watch every bit of Yankees baseball that we can as frustrating as it may be. But I still say there is a lot of season left....I refuse to even think about playoffs even though everyone has been talking about them since the first 20 games of the season.

Relentless huh? Ok well we will have to be just as relentless if we make some serious noise this post-season. But at any rate I will enjoy you donning a Sox Icon for a month if we win the division. Which I might add... looks good for now. Enjoy your vacation Dan!

First of all - Dan, enjoy your vacation! image

Second of all, my comment worked. Just checking for a pulse over here, that's all.

You have to admit, the timing of this thread dying off was pretty coincidental. And come on, jlbsquared - intelligent discussion? Like perkdog said, how many years of "1918" and "curse of the Bambino" did we have to endure, mindless though it is? Now that the tables seem to have turned a bit, it's you guys that run from the intelligent discussion. Agreed, lighten up Francis!

It wasn't a coincidence that every yankee fan here ran for the hills when their hot streak ended. soft gets a pass for being on vacation, but the other ones - nope. I've seen them posting here and haven't touched their precious yankee thread for weeks.

<< <i>Someday, somewhere there will be a thread for Yankee fans where they can post honest ideas and thoughts on their team without flaming haters (Red Sox fans and fans with some other vague favorite team they like for some mystery reason) jumping in with the constant, repetetive, babyish PAYROLL!!!! 2004!!!! JETER SUCKS!!!!! ARODS UNDER-APPRECIATED!!!!! THE PAST DOESN'T MATTER EXCEPT FOR 2004!!!!! bullcrap and turning every topic into an argument. Intelligent discussion? please. PAYROLL!!! 2004!!!! >>

I think Yankee fans threw "1918" into the faces of Sox fans for a lot longer time than Yankee fans have heard "2004."

I was at Yankees-Red Sox game at Fenway about 10 years ago, and pretty much all the Yankee fans could say was "1918." Over and over again.
