Always looking for vintage wax boxes!
  • Here are two graded cards I got at a card show last weekend. I also picked up two raw commons that I thought might grade out at 2 or 3. (went through a stack of about 30 and picked the best two in my opinion)

Dealer marked them at $50 each and the raws at $20 ea. I gave him $100 for all 4. I should post scans of the raw cards so you can fully assess my deal.

If the raw come back PSA 2, then I think I got a good deal. If they come back as 1 or 1.5s, then the dealer probably got the better deal.

I also thought about offering him the $100 for a PSA 2 Sport Kings- Red Grange which he also had marked for $140.

I picked this up before I realized I had an example with a Tolstoi back. Still, this is my first graded 206, and my first Old Mill.

  • It seems like Old Mills are falling from trees these days! Here's my latest HOF pick-up -- it used to reside in a PSA3.5 holder.

I've always been strangely drawn to Shannon's card -- it looks like he breathed some bad chemicals from the factories in the background and is bloating as a result. image

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started

  • Here are the four cards I recently picked up at a cardshow for $100. A good deal I thought, not great but I don't think I got taken. Anythoughts on what PSA might grade the two raw cards?

Agreed. As with the Cobb, the richness and consistency of the green background is just critical. Both cards are pretty high on my current wantlist.

The grade PSA 1 on my Young in only because of a light glue stain on the reverse. There is no paper loss....just the light glue residue. I had thought about seeing if it can be removed but I opted to keep it the way it is. Here is the front and back of the Young. I have several other T206's with the same residue problem from a collection I bought years ago.

A question for you T-206 experts - which is the more desirable back in your opinion, Tolstoi or Old Mill?
  • yawie99yawie99 Posts: 2,575 ✭✭✭
Tolstoi. They usually fetch 25 percent more or so than a common back, but there's very little premium for Old Mill backs.
    imageimageimageimageimageimage
  • i dont collect backs, but if i had a choice i would go with tolstoi just because it looks nicer. i believe there are different variations of old mill backs...some rarer than tolstoi.
  • cwazzycwazzy Posts: 3,257
Is there a brown version of the non-Southern League Old Mill back? Or is that one only found in black?

The brown Old Mill is out there. It's exceptionally rare though. According to my list it is more rare than the Drum and Uzit backs.

You're on the verge of what I consider a great collecting achievement, Scott. I know there's a segment of the hobby that dismisses the T206 set based on the ubiquity of the cards, but as one who could not slay the Monster, I tip my cap to those that do. I don't think people realize what a huge undertaking building a T206 set is or what kind of sustained focus and effort it requires. Way to go, man.

Way to go, Scott. I would never have that type of focus. I seem to switch collecting philosophies every few weeks, it seems.

  • Thanks for the kind words Steve and Mark. Both of you are part of my set as I've bought multiple cards from each of you, for that I give a heartfelt thanks.

I'm happy to say I've acquired the last 3 cards I need. I have to get them and then send them to SGC to be graded so it will be a few weeks before I post them.

Mark congrats on another Hindu and a HOFer to boot.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I really appreciate them. Just as an FYI I didn't really "complete" the set. I am missing the big 4 plus O'Hara and Demmitt but I still did manage to grab 518 out of 524.

As for what's next I think I am going to try an E96 caramel set. No really high dollar cards (no wagner, cobb, jackson etc.) which will allow me to give my wallet a break for awhile. I'll also be keepimg an eye out for an O'Hara and Demmitt.

    Should be fun.

    Best,
