I don't know a ton about Paul Brown but he did have a little Belichick in him when he ran Mac Speedie out of the league who very well could gave been a HOF receiver.

Just for clarification: Maybe a trivial point, but it's more accurate to state that Belichick had some Paul Brown in him, seeing as Brown had retired from coaching before Belichick began --- and --- Mac Speedie is a HOF receiver, he entered in 2020 --- and --- While Brown and Speedie did in fact have a tenuous relationship he wasn't "ran out of the league" or anything like that. His salary was doubled in a bidding war with a rival league and the Browns didn't match it. Mac Speedie acted as modern day NFL players do, they play for the money.

I didn't realize he actually made the HOF

From what I remember reading I don't think it was all about a bidding war but whatever your the Cleveland guy so you definitely know more than me about it.

And yes you are correct about Belichick having some Paul.Brown in him lol

Two upsets last night on Monday Night Football. The Giants beat the Packers, and Tennessee shocked the Dolphins. I figured the Fish would blow the Tuxedos out of the water.

The Giants may have suddenly turned into a problem for the Eagles. The Birds have to play two of their last three games against them.

It sure looks like the Dolphins are not going to get it done in the playoffs.

I turned it off at halftime. what happened with Tyreeks knee?

I wonder how much of the Chiefs offensive regression this season has to do with Eric B. leaving? word has it that he was the hard "butt" of the coaching staff that held players accountable. It clearly isnt Andy, as Toney is still on the roster.

@perkdog, Paul Brown was a hard-nosed, old school, military trained Head Coach. To call him a disciplinarian would be a compliment, but he knew how to win football games, evaluate talent and extract all he could from his players. While he had a tenuous relationship with Mac Speedie that wasn't at all unusual.

Consider the following: he was such a control freak that he wouldn't allow his QB's to call audibles at the line of scrimmage towards the end of his career with the Browns, that's what drove Milt Plum away. He also butted heads with Jim Brown but the biggest problems he had were with new majority owner Art Modell who fired him. Shortly after that Jim Brown retired due to the interference and style of Modell.

I have always said that the NFL benefitted greatly from Art Modell, he was an advertising guy who negotiated many of their big TV contracts, but the Browns suffered because he was too proactive and wanted to micro-manage things. He pretty much ruined the team two decades from the 1970's-1990's, then moved it to Baltimore where he won his Super Bowl. There are fans who still hold such contempt for Art Modell that they would vandalize his home close to Cleveland. Modell would never return to the city.

Very interesting about Brown, after you mentioned he was a HOF'er I researched him a bit and apparently I was a little off on what I thought I knew about it, Speedie actually brought a skunk into the locker room or something to annoy Brown lol after reading about it more it looks like Speedie broke his contract and signed in Canada

Unrelated but I guess Brown didn't really treat Motley all that well after his retirement, Motley claimed that Brown blocked him from getting coaching jobs but either way I'm not trying to dig up dirt on Brown I just knew there was some stuff about him but he was a legendary coach and innovator as you said.

I know a little about Model and what you posted about it.

Cleveland has a storied history for sure

He’s just being consistent in what he believes, that the games should be decided on the field. He’s getting really tired of the refs being the big story after every Chiefs game.
Remember last week when MVS got mugged late in the game and PI was not called? Did Mahomes blame the refs after the game?

No, he didn't. Because he knows that earlier in that same drive, KC was gifted a bogus late penalty.

Obviously, Toney's positioning is changed here but just take a peek at the right tackle. He & Toney are both "on the line of scrimmage" and yet they lined up 2 yards apart.

Speaking of that week 1 loss to Detroit, not only did Toney have a big drop late, he cost KC a pick 6 on a ball that hit him right in the hands.

  • MaywoodMaywood Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭✭✭

Mahomes has "nothing to be tired of" because the Refs have saved his bacon over the years too many times to count. I have droned on and on about "averages" and that's all that's happening. No Refs are trying to get the Chiefs but the calls even out after awhile.

  • 2dueces2dueces Posts: 6,440 ✭✭✭✭✭

Has everyone forgotten the ticky tack PI that all but wrapped up last year’s SB? Philly didn’t cry like a little b$tch. The media and the Chiefs need to STFU and move on.

I agree with @Maywood. Patty has been helped by calls and hurt by them. it will ultimately even out.

the one i feel bad for is poor Travis Kelce. he lost his hof induction/membership over this whole flag fiasco. he is the one with a real gripe here...

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

  • MaywoodMaywood Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭✭✭

Running downfield, Kelce stops and turns to his left to throw a dart across his body to Toney!! What a play. I think they should sit Mahomes for whining and start Kelce at QB this week. All they need to do is figure out how he can throw the ball downfield and then get there to catch his pass.

Herbert out for rest of year for Chargers. Maybe the backup will shine like the 6 or 7 other backups have for different teams this year. I will chase the over. With Vegas scoreless last week maybe they can cobble 10 points to help out the over.

ouch that is rough news. I figured this late in the year, with a broken finger on his throwing hand that would be the result.

I posted about his back-up in the QB thread, he has a peculiar name and I think he's in his 3rd year, never threw a pass before the injury.

Just a few thoughts heading into the final weeks of the NFL.
The 7-6 log jam in the AFC will eventually sort itself out but unless you’re a fan of the team who would you rather watch
    Buffalo with Josh Allen
    Pittsburgh with Trubisky
    Cincinnati with Browning
    Indy with Minchew
    Even
    Denver with Russell Wilson

Its pretty obvious most fans would want to see Allen
Maybe the NFL sees the Bills running the table.

That argument was already used somewhat by the NCAA when choosing the 4th team for their playoff. It wouldn't work in the NFL. Besides, if Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills are better than the rest of the "logjam" then why are they stuck there with those teams? You shouldn't have to think about the answer unless "you’re a fan of the team" as you posted.

There's an old saying, You are what your record says you are. There's a reason the Bills are 7-6. Even that win over KC was nothing special, neither team played very well and neither QB played very well: 23/44, 233, 1 and 1 is nothing to write home about.

We'll have a good look at how good the Bills are tomorrow against the Cowboys. If they win then their picture gets brighter, if Dallas beats them like a drum they might be done. I'll miss the game because I don't get FOX but it should a good, possibly high scoring affair between two competent teams.

    Dorian Thompson Robinson
    Jake Browning
    Kyler Murray

    Gardner Minshew

...the next 5 weeks, winning one of them, and ultimately missing the playoffs

Since the Giants are playing New Orleans, I guess I am a New York team fan this week. The Tampa team is trying to beat New Orleans for their division title and a place in the playoffs.

You asked and I answered. You're a fan of Buffalo, I get that, it shows in what you post. I'm a fan of Cleveland, it shows in what I post. We just disagree, especially on how good the Bills are and most things Josh Allen. Right now the Bills are like most of the NFL, they tend to run hot-and-cold and can't be depended to perform one way or the other on any given week.

The Bills lost to the Jets!! The Jets!!! The Bills lost to the Patriots!! The freakin' Patriots!! They have also played very, very well and beaten some good teams. They absolutely spanked the Cowboys today, I didn't see that coming but it doesn't really surprise me either. So there we have it.

You would rather watch the Bills because they're you're favorite team. Of the teams listed in your post I'd rather watch the Colts. They played good yesterday and right now they'd be in, but we'll see in three weeks what it looks like. This is the modern NFL, settle things in the last week of the season. Good luck in Miami, they've looked pretty good all season and it's hard to beat anyone twice in the same season.
