We are now 3/4 of the way in. Brock is still #1 in pretty much any QB stat that matters. Niners are 11-3 after that mid-season 3 game losing streak. Only the Ravens are there with them but I have always been a skeptic of a QB that runs so much when it is crunch time. Niners pasted the Eagles who seem to be having a bad streak right now. Brock 29 TDs against 7 I's. I was all in last year when I saw this guys poise. Reminded me of Montana, nothing phases him. Optimistic going into the playoffs in a few weeks.

Chapeau to Mayfield. I hates them, yes I hates them, my precious. But credit where credit is due.

How about Keenum. Dude from UH with one of the best seasons as a Vike only to be abandoned by their loser coach a few years back then Zin dude deservedly fired. Replacing injured Stroud and getting the job done. Case just perseveres when everyone else calls him a journeyman. Just a guy who needs the right system (as all QBs do) and just wins anyway. Tejanos were always in the playoffs when I was sitting in Orlando airport coming home from FUN during the Watt years. This year? Fingers crossed........................... FUN + Tejanos + Niners, good triumvirate.

Going anywhere in the middle of the field or elevating for a catch takes guts in the NFL, I have mucho respecto for the receivers that choose to do that because not all receivers will. One such receiver for the Cleveland Browns who lacked that ability was Anthony Schwartz. He stopped stone cold in his tracks two years ago because he knew if he continued and caught/missed the pass that his clock was getting cleaned!! The play resulted in the Int that Baker Mayfield injured his shoulder on trying to tackle the guy that picked it off.

I think that is a difference between Kelce and Gronk. Gronk probably would have caught that ball and taken the big hit.

It is amazing that Gronk and Kelse are the same age.

Not a lot of passing yards for the league leaders this year, I thought with that 17th game 5000 yards would be the standard

@spacehayduke, Brock Purdy gets criticism and is downplayed because of the talent the 49ers have.....................until you actually watch him play. He strikes me as a guy who's a 10 year veteran by the way he moves, throws, reacts and seems to most always make the right decision. I don't know if that sort of stuff can be taught.

    He definitely has poise.

As far as criticism goes I wouldn't say he gets brushed aside over it, isn't he a front runner for MVP?

His line is great and McCaffrey is a threat any time he gets the ball, I don't think SF receivers are all that, Samuel's and Ayiuk are solid but they are not Tyreek Hill or Jefferson category

While I am a big supporter on Purdy, he found the right system at the right time to show his talent. McCaffrey is a better RB than any Montana had (some pretty good ones back then including Roger Craig), and Samuel and Ayiuk may not be John Taylor and Jerry Rice, but still solid as noted. And TE Kittle is top 3 this year. And the line does a pretty good in protecting and setting up the plays, the coaching is calling the right plays for the players they have. It all works together. We saw that with the one year Keenum excelled in vike land, a so-called 'weak armed' qb, in the right system, with the right players, and a great OC to get the right plays set up, goes from a QBR of 35-40-ish to a QBR of 73 and wins lots of games. Would Purdy still excel if he had less protection or in a different system? We are probably talking 1% difference between the QB elite and the B QB's in the NFL in terms of talent. So that is where system, supporting cast, and coaching makes the difference.

In the current niner system, Purdy could excel for a decade, I hope that happens.

    Best, SH

@perkdog, maybe "criticized" is the wrong word, but when Purdy gets mentioned a lot of people will say "look at the talent around him" as if that's his fault and you or I could do what he's done. Realistically, if he hadn't been injured in the NFC Championship there's every likelihood that the 49ers could have won. The team would have at least been more competitive than 31-7.

As to the 49ers receivers, they seem to be as good as any group in the NFL. We focus so much on McCaffrey as an RB that we forget how good he can be as a receiver out of the backfield or lined up. Aiyuk is sneaky and highly competent, Kittle is in the top five(my assessment) among TE's and Deebo Samuel is among the best WR's playing. He strikes me as a combination of Tyreek Hill and Rob Gronkowski. The power that Deebo shows is what sets him apart.

Well I thought last week the Falcons pulled off the biggest choke job by losing to the great Carolina Panthers. They could have been tied for the division lead with a win. So they’re probably toast now unless they win out.

  • MaywoodMaywood Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭✭✭

@Darin, the thing about that is that almost every season there's a team that's 2-14, 1-12, 3-10 or something like that and they pull off an upset towards the end of the season. In a strange way those teams might be the most dangerous in the entire NFL!! There are guys who just don't care, guys who figure they're fighting for a job and a Head Coach with nothing to lose so he pulls out all the stops.

I hate it when my team has to play someone like that.

True those trap games have to be taken seriously, no looking ahead to the next game. I know nothing about the Falcons but that was a really bad loss. Now they face an 8-6 colts team that is trying to make the playoffs so that could be an interesting game.
Do the Falcons show up this week or just fold like a house of cards?

Trust me I saw it twice this year. Buffalo made Mac Jones and Hunter Henry look like Brady and Gronk. And don’t even get me started about that fiasco in the Meadowlands

To date 54 players have darn, either
Have started at QB or played QB this season. I heard it but don’t remember which it is.
With all the safety concerns and protection that sounds like an absurd amount. That averages to over 3 per team

Probably played at QB. With the safety concerns you mentioned they pull guys out quickly like they did with Purdy in the last few weeks. I think he missed 2-3 plays. A lot of it, though it seems like overkill, stems from everything that happened with Tua in Miami.

I've been saying it for years that primary guys should be taken out late in the 4th quarter with the game in hand.

More coaches should be doing that

@2dueces, watching the first game today Todd Blackledge started with the two QB's means there have been 58 different starting QB's this season which is remarkable.

Am I the only one watching who figures the games this weekend almost amount to playoff games for about half the league??

Pittsburgh's beatin' the Bengals like a drum 24-0 at the half. A Steelers win effectively eliminates both teams from the playoffs though they'll each have a statistical chance.

Looks like Rudolph just earned himself a starting job from now on!

Rudolph has almost 300 yds passing - 2 TDs and still in the 3rd.

Jake Browning would appear to have been exposed at least a little. Apparently if he gets moved off his spot in the pocket his accuracy drops and his decision making isn't as sharp. He's been fortunate thus far to have thrown only two interceptions.

He has plenty of time for more picks, he just tossed #3

With the Bengals loss the Bills control their own destiny for the first time in 3 weeks. Win out and in. With a Miami loss to either the cowboys or ravens and a Bills win in Miami they win the AFC East.
I would suspect dolphins fans are sweating for the first time all year.

Just a normal Chargers game - take a lead then let the other team come back and take the lead.

The Bills defense saved their bacon today with all the stops which resulted in Field Goals, one lapse for a TD and the Chargers would have won. I thought the pressure brought with blitzes every time the Chargers had 3rd and long were the keys. Inexperience by Easton Stick had him holding the ball and getting sacked. By contrast, whenever Josh Allen felt pressure he'd get rid of the ball. I think the only sack on Buffalo was that one down by their five yard line.

  • 2dueces2dueces Posts: 6,440 ✭✭✭✭✭

Whew! Just when you think it’s safe to go into the water. Buffalo comes off a huge win, travels cross country on a short week and sleep walks through the first quarter.
There are 53 professional athletes on a football team and it’s hard to win in the NFL. Whew.

You, me and every talking head in sports. Just when you believe they look like that. Oh they’re getting hot at the right time. Muff punt, Allen tries hero ball, Cook coughs up the game.
But Allen throws a dart to Diggs on 3rd down and a Hail Mary lob. Yeah the cardiac Bills strike again

Not discussed is the thorough dismantling of the Bengals by the Steelers. AFC North games are always tough but give credit to Tomlin and Rudolph.
Browning finally showed why he is a back up. He got away with those throws last week but not last night.
Rudolph the 58th different starting quarterback in his first start in 2+ years showed he stayed ready. Congratulations
Pickens who’s been blasted by everyone all week showed why he’s still on the roster.
Both teams are basically mathematically out but Tomlin needs just one win for his 17th straight winning season (and to cover my future)

Buffalo had three straight weeks against contenders and acquitted themselves admirably. then they flew across the country to play a team with a fork in its side. it was the perfect spot for a letdown. toss in the Chargers willing to die for the new guy after quitting on Staley the week before (probably because they wanted him out), and voilà.........a much closer than expected outcome

  • MaywoodMaywood Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭✭✭

@craig44, the same could be said for Dallas. Maybe the only team they've beaten was Philly once after they had already lost to them. I see this as a "toss up" since neither Miami or Dallas has shown the ability to play to their record against similar teams.

Both teams have shown an inability to win on the road. I think every loss by these two teams has been on the road, so based on that I'd say the odds are for Miami to win.

And Joe Flacco can still throw the long ball. How is it he was sitting on his couch for 13 games when QB's around the NFL were literally dropping like flies??
