Enjoying this Draped Bust Half today and marveling at how I wish I could time travel back to when this beauty was made to watch the process at the mint.
Enjoying a little family history with an iced macchiato this morning. These belonged to my great grandfather and were stored in a tin can in paper flips for about 75 years. I certified the best of them (there were about 50 total in various conditions). I used to sneak into my folks’ room to view these starting at age 4 and they’re what got me into coins.
Cool to think that someday my grandchildren may get to enjoy something that belonged to their great-great-great grandfather.

I am trying to recover from the embarrassing Purdue Boilermakers men's basketball performance last night against Northwestern. Tough to win with a 17-3 turnover differential. It's tough being a Purdue bball fan.
So, to make this coin related, I want to post this hammered lincoln close up (not mine) that I've kept in my WOW pic folder:
It's even more bleak being a Northwestern basketball fan with only two NCAA tournament appearances, but the clouds seem to lift for us lately whenever #1 ranked Purdue comes to town.

I wonder what coin I'm gonna look at today with my coffee?
Believe it or not, it's that crusty AG 55/54 because I just received it. It looks great. I gave it a 10-minute soak in acetone and none of the color was removed, but some scratches and hairlines were exposed, which is typical if they're there. The obverse looks fine. The reverse retains this dark film or stain on the wings. How would PCGS handle this? Could this be restored without dipping the glory out of the coin?
It sure looks great in a Cointain.
Northwestern just beat Illinois in a wild 4th quarter 45-43.
This has been a GREAT Saturday!!! High Five to @1northcoin and CoinRaritiesOnline!
I think the film would have to stay, any attempt to remove it would look noticeably off, IMO. Don't see any reason why it shouldn't straight grade for what it is, if that's your goal.
Thanks. I agree. I'll probably keep it in an Air-Tite and show it to folks at FUN before considering submitting it. I like the look of it but it's not valuable enough for grading. I may anyway; it's a trophy and a memory of a great weekend. Make it two weekends in a row!
Christmas music is playing, my better half is making cookies and I’m having a cup of my favorite coffee with gingerbread creamer…which to my surprise is actually good.
Took out the pre-33 gold box of 20 this morning, which is just basically a 12 piece gold type set and some dupes that I kept after making a few upgrades.
Enjoy your Saturday!!!
@Inspired70 Don't let that weigh you down this morning!!
.
NEWP's this week, both RARE ... the note is a pop 2/0, and the coin, the most difficult DM for 1826
Pursuit: I don't know how to grade currency admittedly, but can't see how that $20 is a 58?? So very nice!
>
.
Funny you should say that Darrell. In my opinion, currency is more difficult to grade from images, especially when they are above the true AU55 level. Even in hand, after they are graded, they can be challenging.
I actually almost posted this, from my notes, and after careful study after it arrived;
Lovely note with great margins and registration. Nice paper and very good color. EPQ? Okay, maybe not. 58? Not so sure about that. The only apparent evidence I see doesn't appear to be a crinkle or evidence from handling, but an as-made inclusion. No Unc's have been certified so far as I know, and I have never seen an image that makes me believe a true one exists. This might really be the single finest known, and really, I suppose I could see it in a 63/4 holder on any given day.
These are PMG's images, which do not fully do the note justice (the inclusion can be seen however, on the reverse, just above the O in DOLLARS, right center);
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

"WOW!!!" is right. That Lincoln is hammered. I love finding them like that. A rare occurrence.
Here is a coin of supreme rarity and if from the USA might be a SEVEN FIGURE COIN. The closest analogy would be if there really was a confirmed 1959 Lincoln WHEAT cent, or possibly the 1913 Liberty Nickel.
It is the 2009 Great Britain 10 pence, uncirculated and one of two known. It is the with the 2009 date but of the type discontinued in 2008, and has been confirmed by the Royal Mint Museum; there are no proofs or any other presentation variety, so that is it, TWO KNOWN. Next post will show the coin as well as what an "ordinary" 2009 10 pence of the usual variety looks like, then the coin and finally the letter of authentication.
Love that Milled British (1830-1960) Well, just Love coins, period.

Saturday morning (working at my office for a few hours because my better half is hosting a girls only Xmas brunch with some of her friends). Thinking of this #8 ranked Registry Set of mine, since 1956 is my birth year and since I had great fun making all 6 coins in this set from raw cherry picks.
Caballito, a wonderful design - if you look this up on apple translator it says "wheelie" but I believe "little horse" is a better translation. Anyway, this coin I got raw on ebay as a 1913/2 (to which the writer of the book on Caballito agreed, but did not certify as the overdate ?), but is the same design as a 1912 coin bought on the boards raw for a bargain price and then graded at our hosts at 65! That is amazing & bought it only off the picture; the seller had a 1914 which is the key date but frequently abused or counterfeited so sadly passed...
Notum: oops, this is an ordinary 1913, not the overdate & can't find that coin's pictures...
Before you pass this by, note that it is an "off metal strike" of a British penny but that it was struck on a 1956 SIXPENCE coin! I do believe Mr. Byers loves this sort of thing, amongst others.

It belonged to Steve Tanenbaum, and the 2x2 bears his signature multi-colored notes all over it. That was a guy with passion for everything. Even a little, cheap token like this grabbed his attention and started research.

I will need a full pot of coffee as I’m listing and hopefully selling almost everything. Except for the ones that need a another opinion first.
My plan from the proceeds is to buy one exquisitely beautiful $10 Indian, peace dollar, or Barber half depending on what’s available when all this goes down. The only other requirement I have is that the coin has booming luster and at 67 or better.
