Here is a rare medal I'm pondering over a cup this morning:
It has been called the first commemorative of the American Civil War, struck in 1862 by Joseph H Merriam from copper taken from a battle in Newbern, NC. Very rare relic medal from the grim beginning. From the Andrew Zabriskie Collection.
And here is the only known image of Abraham Lincoln lying in state.
As the story goes, the photographer was ordered to destroy any images taken of our slain president. But he didn't have the heart to dispose of this captured moment. The Union officers looking so forlorn as the martyr lay at peace.

This was a fun cup until the final crack in her base. She’s going to the “can of no return “ today.
Also this arrived and it’s magnificent. Way PL in hand. Almost hard to believe it’s an uncirculated Denver.
Hey gang,
Happy coffee Saturday.
Posted this one in another thread, but I'll leave it here for posterity. Pioneer Base Ball Club medal by J.A. Bolen Springfield, MA PCGS MS64RB
It is believed that this medal, struck just prior to the American Civil War, is the earliest medallic commemoration of our nation's pastime.
How cool is that?

Did the coffee in the French Press today. Longer process, but better coffee. All the while, admiring my new pickup that I fell in love with when I saw it. Hard to find a toned WLH that I find attractive.
Loving this one!
One of the few things I personally collect is vulcanite & celluloid transportation tokens & I'm at the point that I add 2-3 pieces in a good year. I've been blanked this year up until the last two weeks when two rare pieces found their way to me. Below is a Salt Lake City celluloid piece, the first example I've seen offered in my collecting & dealing career - I didn't hesitate when it was offered (2-3 total reported).
Nice pics this morning. I was imaging some medals when the doorbell rang.
It was a US coin!
I figured I'd share it along with a couple of the medals.
Have a good day all!
Battered and abused lil' beauty I got for a few bucks at a local shop this week. Soaked her in acetone for a couple of days, so she's stable and I'm pretty sure never been cleaned. But she had a hard life for a while there.
We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last. --Severian the Lame
And some interesting early sterling silver souvenir spoons I recently picked up from another local shop.
Souvenir spoons entered the American conscious in 1889 for the centennial of Washington's inauguration. All the World Fairs, travel and leisure, and disposable income created a perfect storm and they became a craze. The earliest ones are hand-engraved. Later examples are die-stamped in silver--very much like coins.
Imagine the amount of effort that went into carving these tiny scenes on concave bowls while the buyer stood behind you, watching:

My coffee place across the street just poured my usual, a 4 shot latte....It gets ya going! Here's a couple major toners, in my two favorite design types. The Barber comes from the famous Shireman set, and the Walker is from Simpson. Two guys that clearly loved originally toned coins.
Enjoyed a cup of fresh ground butter pecan coffee as I made breakfast for my better half this morning.
I have a couple of Morgans coming in today for my date set. In the mean time, gonna be in the back yard blowing leaves. 😎

In this case they are real nice 😁

Today with my coffee I’m enjoying my pretty type 1. I have many type 1 buffalo nickels and this one here is one of my favorites.
Happy Birthday a day late. It was nice of you to post a birthyear coin for us to see.
This is what I was doing yesterday morning. I went to a client's house to view his Bust Dime collection that I have helped him assemble.

That's a heck of a spread ... hopefully you got a cup of coffee in there too!
Thanks for the Birthday wish. Was a great day!
