12 Days of Christmas Carnage VIII (Jimmy Brown RC grade is in...)

ssollarsssollars Posts: 932 ✭✭✭✭

As the unopened markets keep getting crazier, I'm once again about to do my part and keep the madness going by sacrificing some unopened packs so that others may survive. :)

My unopened stash has not been growing much over the last couple of years and unfortunately I have foreseen the end of the line to these yearly adventures in frivolity. I've been pretty lucky in this year of Covid to have maintained my income by working from home and reduced my spending on many discretionary things by staying at home. This has lead me down a path of planning out the next three and final years of these rips. I made a few purchases this year (so far) that I can hopefully finish out these rips with a bang! I'm down to needing 1 item ('76 Rack) to finish out my plans, although I well be keeping an eye out for “special” packs that I may be adding along the way.

So the countdown to 2022 has begun when I plan on finishing all this with a tenth anniversary blowout rip that should be my biggest ever and likely the last packs I'll ever open!

Below is this year's selection of packs, followed by the schedule:

Bonus pack

14 - 5 – '87 Wax (Young)
15 - 5 - '85 Wax, 2 – '85 Cello, '82 Cello (85 Marino)
16 - '82 Rack, 6 -'83 Wax (82 Payton, Collinsworth RC)
17 - '84 Wax, '84 Rack, '81 Cello (Marino RC, Monk RC, 81 Payton)
18 - 7 – '80 Wax, '81 Cello (nothing!)
19 - 2 - '81 Wax, '81 Rack, '81 Cello (Clark RC)
20 - 2 – '86 Wax, 2 – '86 Rack (Rice RC, Young RC
21 - 4 – '78 Wax, 2 – '79 Wax (nothing!)
22 - '75 Wax, '77 Wax, '74 Wax (Fouts RC)
23 - '76 Cello (nothing!)
24 - '65 Wax (nothing!)
25 - '58 Cello + Bonus '58 Cello (Jim Brown RC)

The Prequels:

2019 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage VII ('58 Cello)
2018 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage VI ('59 Cello)
2017 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage V ('58 & '60 Cello)
2016 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage IV ('60 Cello)
2015 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage III ('58 Cello)
2014 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage II ('59 & '60 Cello)
2013 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage I ('58 Cello)
2012 - Christmas - (2 - '58 Cellos)
2011 - Christmas - ('58 Cello)

    Day 2 - 5 packs of 1985 Wax, 2 packs of 1985 Cello and a pack of 1982 Cello

While looking for some penny sleeves before starting yesterday, I found a partial box of 1985 wax that wasn't in my stash inventory list! So I added an additional 4 packs to tonight's selection.

The 85 wax packs were mostly off-center and without much star power.

    Best cards are shown below:

The 85 cello packs were a little better, but were also mostly off-center. Star power a little better with a 2nd year Marino.

Best cards shown below along with the stickers.

The 82 cello pack wasn't much better...

    Day 3 - 1982 Rack and 6 packs of 1983 Wax

The '82 rack was mostly off-center top to bottom with only a few well centered cards and some start power. A nice Payton redeemed this pack.

The '83 packs had much better centering although many suffered from poor print quality and a few surface wrinkles along the way. Some decent star power but none of the major hits.

Top to bottom center plagued the stickers too...

Great thread! I'm late to add my comments, but in order:

    Jeff Chadwick was clearly juicing.

Who among us doesn't have a partial box of 1985 football wax packs that we forgot were in the penny sleeve room?

Every time I see the 1982 Terry Bradshaw in Action, I think of the following:

    Day 5 - 7 packs of 1980 Wax and a 1981 Cello

The 7 80 packs were all from the same box and it showed. Very little in the way of centered cards, maybe 1 per pack. A little bit of start power showed up but nothing big.

The 81 cello was a complete dud! Must have been thrown around at some point, major ding in one corner of almost every card. No star power and only a few centered cards :(

    Day 6 - 2 packs of 1981 Wax, a 1981 Cello and a 1981 Rack

Finishing up the '81s for this year not with a bang, but with a whimper.

Had a little hope for the wax, but the best that came out of them was a Dwight Clark RC along with a couple of other star cards and a few centered ones as well. All sheet A cards from both packs were tilted.

Wasn't expecting much from the cello. It yielded a couple stars and less than a handful of centered cards.

Wasn't excepting much from the rack either and it didn't disappoint. Basically one star but quite a few centered cards, so that's something :)
