12 Days of Christmas Carnage VII - (Merry Christmas, A stunning 1958 Don Bosseler RC (last card))

Not to sound like a broken record, but here I go again...
It's that time a year where I throw caution to the wind and clean out a portion of my unopened stash for some good old pack rippin' fun. This year the '58 cello makes its comeback once again for the next to the last time. It's getting harder and harder to justify opening these considering what even a basic pack goes these days. But, after seeing a couple Jimmys pulled this year from packs with sequencing "errors", I can't bring myself to sell the ones (2) I have knowing that it's still possible that a Jimmy lurks in one of them!
The group shot of the packs for this year is shown below, followed by the ripping schedule:
14 : 4 - '87 wax (Young)
15 : 2 - '82 wax and 3 - '83 wax ('82 Montana & '83 Payton)
16 : 4 - '85 wax (Moon RC)
17 : 4 - '80 wax (Nothing)
18 : 2 - '84 wax (Nothing)
19 : 2 - '81 Cellos (Montana RC)
20 : 1 - '86 Cello and 1 - '86 Rack (Rice RC)
21 : 2 - '79 Wax (Nothing)
22 : 2 - '78 Wax (Bradshaw)
23 : 2 - '77 Wax (Payton)
24 : 1 - '75 Wax and 1 - '76 Wax (Nothing)
25 : 1 - '58 Cello (Don Bosseler RC)

My favorite thread of the year! Cannot wait to watch.
I cannot believe another year has passed already. I can't wait!!
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
I love this thread!!!!!...Thanks Scott!, and GREAT luck to you
Count Me In amongst the group of people who absolutely love this thread every year
Looking forward to seeing the Carnage
Looking forward to the show.

1985 Topps Football (starting in psa 8) - #9 - started 05/21/06
When will this years menu be revealed?
Just now!
Hoping to see Jim Brown show his face!
Day 1: 1987 Wax
Not much excitement expected on the first few days. These 4 packs yielded only some OK cards. A lot of surface print issues and many for what I call "oil" spots, which included a nice 2nd year Young.
Best cards shown below...
And the tradition continues. The best time of the year!!
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
As David mentioned above me, I love this tradition, too. It's one thing to talk about cards on this forum; it's another thing altogether to show them. I love the ripping of vintage wax as much as I love collecting it. Good luck, Scott. And thanks for bringing the joy!
Andy
I really like 87 Topps football to me it is the last great Topps football set before all the others came in. I know they stood alone in 88 as well but that set design was a real dud in my opinion.
Day 2: 83 & 82 Wax
Two of these '83 wax packs came from a group break here and yielded mostly off center and tilted cards. A few stars showed up including a Payton, but all where flawed in some way. There were a few centered however.
Best of the first 2 packs...

The final pack of '83 wax was my last one from a Galena, IL pickup and it yielded much better cards but no star power.
All but the wax and gum cards shown below...

The '82 wax packs are the last two from a fun bag I bought a few years ago. I didn't have much hope of anything good from these as the others have all yielded poor condition (corners and centering) cards. Except for Joe showing up twice, these packs were as bad as I expected.
Best 6 cards shown below...

Love the 1982 Montana with him on the horn to the coordinator upstairs. This is a great holiday tradition. Thanks for sharing the results!
I love early 1980s football. A brute-force game back then for sure.
I am almost certain Joe cool was actually on the phone to pizza hut.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Hannah sighting! And I love the 82 set, including the action cards and the Montana phone card. Stabler is a fun pull too.

Harry Carson is a HOF’er in that 3rd ‘83 wax pack. I would certainly consider that star power!

Day 3: '85 Wax
These 4 packs came from a box a got from Steve at a National a few years ago. Overall not bad, a lot of off centered cards, very few well centered. I did hit a Moon however!
Best cards shown below...

Moon looks great
HOF SIGNED FOOTBALL RCS
85 set could be an all time great. Absolutely love the design. But the images mostly suck, far too many head/sideline shots. That design + action shots would be a killer set
I agree about the 85 set. like the design, but most images are grainy and out of focus as well. that is a nice looking Moon too!
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
That Moon card wasTHE card that got me into collecting. I had a few Walter Payton cards that someone had given me because I was a Bears fan. But then I saw that Moon Card and it has been one of my favorite sets since then. Everything you guys say about the 85 Topps set is correct. It is deeply flawed and super condition sensitive and I love the challenge. I have about 50-60 of those moon cards alone and a few complete sets. Love the rip man, thanks
User name checks out.
Love the football rips. Is there a Youtube link to watch you opening them?
I do usually record the "big" packs, but I've never done them live or posted them anywhere.
Day 4: '80 Wax
Not much in these pack this year. Most of the well centered cards all came from the same pack. A little star power but nothing great. The best star card was mulled on the edge!
Best shown below...

Nice rips! I like the Dickerson card with the goggles, and of course Joe on the phone (leave it to Topps).
I also dig those foam pieces with the perfectly cut spaces for the cards. Must make scanning a snap (especially if one is OCD about getting the cards perfectly straight
).
Day 5: '84 Wax
Not much here, very little star power and many off-centered cards. Each pack did yield 4 nicely centered cards!
All of pack #1...

All of pack #2...

Love this thread. Will any of the cards you pulled so far be subbed to PSA?

I have loved this thread for years, but I have been meaning to ask, how did you make those freaking cool black card holders for scanning?

Collecting unopened 80's boxes and graded packs
I may be hoarding too much 80's junk wax but I like it!
They are made from multiple layers of black construction paper cut using a computer controlled craft cutter (Silhouette).
Tonight's rips are going to be posted a little late, I'm off to see The Rise of Skywalker.
As a tease...
there was a Montana pulled!!!
Day 6: '81 Cellos
These two cellos yielded some nice cards. The first pack has a few stars and several well centered commons. The second pack had a well centered half and a complete off-centered half. Luckily, that well centered half contained a Montana Rookie! One of the best Joe's I've ever pulled, but it has a few flaws, I see a slight tilt and a few print dots. Still may grade high.
Pack #1, 12 best cards shown...

Pack #2, 6 best plus the big hit shown below...

Wow, congrats. That looks perfect.
Its an a pack fresh beauty for sure
Mint 9 by the looks. Diamond tilt to it will knock it down to 9 from quick viewing. Are those red dots by his shoulder, middle chest left, and above the 49ers lint ?? Or print dots ?? Hows the back on it ?? Would love to pull one that nice pack fresh mine always are worse on print dots or registration, corners etc.
WOW
nice hit

Always people who can't afford the better stuff looking for cheaper alternatives.
.
Sigh. That's gonna hurt. I'd still sub myself and resell to fund more new buys
The thread that always delivers strikes again. Congrats!
Nice looking Montana!!
Day 7: '86 Cello & Rack
Both of these pack suffered major centering issue. The cello had a few nicely centered cards, no major star power. The rack was even worse on centering, but it did contain a Rice although it was off-centered.
Cello Pack, 12 best shown...

Rack, cell #1 (near header card), six best shown!...

Rack, cell #2 (middle) six best shown...

Rack, cell #3 (bottom) six best shown plus the Rice...

This thread is so great. You are on fire!!!
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Love the entire 86 set !! Nice Rice !! 85/86 to me was their best thought out football that decade. Its like they mailed in designs all the other years. They should have taken Fleers queue and kept up the colors. As a checklist side collector wish the ✔ list was better centered
This is fun! Keep 'em coming!
The odds of getting both Rice and Montana rookies out of so few packs has to be astronomical.
Congrats!
