12 Days of Christmas Carnage VI - Day #12 Posted - Merry Christmas ('59 Gifford)

It's that time a year again to bust out the stash and pass judgement on which packs will bite the dust this year! It's a pretty typical selection again this year, although in future years that may have to change. The BIG finishing packs on Christmas day are running very short and are likely not getting replenished at today's prices! But, that just means I'll be busting more packs, they just won't be the really old stuff :)

Here is the opening schedule:

1 - 14th - 4 '87 Wax & 4 '83 Wax - ('83 Allen RC)
2 - 15th - 2 '82 Wax & 4 '85 Wax - ('85 Elway, '85 Marino)
3 - 16th - 6 '80 Wax - (Nothing worth mentioning)
4 - 17th - 2 '84 Wax & 1 '81 Cello - ('84 Elway RC)
5 - 18th - 1 '81 Rack & 1 '81 Wax - ('81 Montana RC)
6 - 19th - 1 '86 Rack & 1 '86 Cello - ('86 Young RC)
7 - 20th - 2 '79 Wax & 1 '78 Rack - ('79 Payton, '78 Staubach)
8 - 21st - 2 '78 Wax & 2 '77 Wax - ('78 Dorsett RC, '78 Bradshaw)
9 - 22nd - 1 '76 Cello & 2 '75 Wax - ('76 Brazile RC)
10 - 23rd - 1 '72 Cello (1st Series) - (Nothing!)
11 - 24th - 1 '63 Wax ('62 Wrapper) - ('63 Unitas)
12 - 25th - 1 '59 Cello - ('59 Gifford)

40 Packs valued @ $2500+

    4 - Packs of 1985 Wax

All these packs were really clean and mostly chip free. The first two packs where star studded. Probably the best Elway I've ever pulled from this set in terms of color, registration and lack of snow but it was slightly off center and has a pretty noticeable print dot! Centering was all over the place, but they did yield a few blazers and other nicely centered commons.

    The best of bunch...

    2 - Packs of 1982 Wax

These packs lacked any star power and where almost all off centered top to bottom. Most also had corner dings on the bottom left. Barely had enough to be worth scanning...

    6 - Packs of 1980 Wax

No much star power in these packs at all. Along with a lot of off-centered and printing issued cards, there were a few nice ones.

Love 80's football! Good luck on the future rips as it looks like you are off to a good start. Seeing Don Calhoun at the bottom of the 1980 Topps grouping reminded me of this joke:

    1 - Pack of 1981 Cello

My first set I ever collected, always got to open me some '81s!

This cello pack had an odd collation, but showed no other signs of being tampered with. It actually contained several very nicely centered commons. But only the one star (that was showing).

    2 - Packs of 1984 Wax

The first pack yielded three rookies! But, the nicest one had gum on the back, the biggest one has wax on the back and the other one was off centered! The rest of that pack was a mostly tilted, off center mess. The other pack had less tilt and did yield a few nice cards including a couple minor stars.

    More 1981 packs tomorrow...

    1 - Pack of 1981 Wax

The two packs tonight were on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to pack opening experiences.

The first pack was a 1981 wax pack from a fun bag I got a few years ago. Not only were there a lot of corner dings (seems pretty typical from the packs I've open from that bag) but almost every card was off centered. Only one star card and it was a subset card!

Here is all that was worth showing...

    1 - 1981 Rack Pack

Now this pack on the other hand was amazing. Not only did it have multiple major stars, but a majority of the cards were nicely centered as well. A lot of the cards not shown below were only slightly off center and I'm lazy.

One of the nicest rack packs I've ever opened and definitely the best so far in this round of rips!

    and this...

    She’s a real beaut, Clark!

    Day #6

    1 - Pack of 1986 Cello

Mostly off center stuff in this pack with a couple stars. Found it interesting that all 3 checklists showed up in the bottom half of this pack!

    1 - 1986 Rack Pack

I was hoping to duplicate last nights results with this pack, but it was a little bit of a let down. Not because of what I thought was in there wasn't there, but the quality of the majority of the cards in this pack was lacking. This pack was not always handled with care as a lot of the cards had corner issues.

Sadly, the centering was pretty decent and yielded a couple handfuls of really nice cards.

Even sadder, is that the Steve Young was also slightly mis-cut. It looks tilted, but the top and bottom are parallel but not square with the sides.

  • craig44craig44 Posts: 10,504 ✭✭✭✭✭

What a great thread! I really dont open packs anymore, so I am living vicariously through your opening. You have had really great luck this year. some of the stars/rookies may not be PSA 10, but you pulled them yourself and I think that is awesome.

Nice Reggie White!! His coming to Green Bay was huge for the franchise. One of the best ever and a menace to opposing offenses. Wish he was still around.

    Day #7

    2 - Packs of 1979 Wax

Centering and tilts plagued these packs, but otherwise all the cards were very sharp. A couple of stars showed up, including an off centered Payton that would have had a shot at GEM. Only 4 well centered cards out of both packs.

    1 - 1978 Rack Pack

Never opened a '78 rack before, but this one was also dinged up like the '86. Not one card had 4 good corners! Centering was pretty good though out except for the biggest star in the pack! Brownies showed up 4 times in this pack, only two shown below.

  • ssollarsssollars Posts: 932 ✭✭✭✭

    Day #8

    2 - Packs of 1978 Wax

The only good thing that came out of the first pack of these '78s was a rookie Dorsett! However, like most of the rest of the pack it was extremely off center. The other pack yielded some nice cards include a Bradshaw.

    2 - Packs of 1977 Wax

No real major star in these 2 packs and only a handful of nicely centered cards. The best 3 of which all had gum damage!

  • ldfergldferg Posts: 6,739 ✭✭✭

Some of those 78s are centered very well. Lovin’ This thread.

    Day #9

None of the notable rookies showed up tonight, wouldn't that have been epic :)

But there was one rookie HOFer that made an appearance...

    1 - Pack of 1976 Cello

This pack yielded better cards than expected, however both HOFs showing had surface wrinkles/creases :( There a couple nicely centered cards that had corner issues. If they hadn't been that way, over 50% would have been nicely centered. Overall a pretty nice pack.

There was one decent HOFer rookie card, although it was slightly off-center.

    All cards shown below...

    First the nice ones...

    and the rest...

    2 - Packs of 1975 Wax

These 2 packs continued the good centering bonanza and yielded about a 50% good to bad ratio. The lot included a couple nice HOFers. Only 1 game card was scanned, but both packs had one.

    All cards shown below...

Dupes are common but cello had 30 cards, S/B 27 cards, 28 tops and all but 1 card came from the left half of the uncut sheet, sorry.

    Day #11

    1 - Pack of 1963 Wax in '62 wrapper

My last one of the lot of these that I picked up a few years ago. As with the other (2) packs I've opened, all the cards had very nice corners and chip free borders. Centering and snow struck most of this pack. The snow on the Unitas is less noticeable, but it is there. The back of the top (Bass) also had some gum damage.

    All card show below...

For those familiar with the history of these packs, notice the gum above. The "double stacked" nature of the broken gum is probably why this pack wasn't protected when it was first slabbed.
