These 78 grades just popped from my most recent sub to PSA. All of these were pulled from a few racks that I've opened over the last few weeks. (Never got this many miscuts in one sub!) What's funny is that this sub popped in about a week, and I still have another one logged in on 5/5 that's still pending. I'm actively collecting the 78 set in PSA 9 and PSA 10 grades, and trying to submit as many cards on my own as I can.

Grote, a LARGE portion of my set is self submitted. Its tough and expensive but the satisfaction out weighs all. I went through many wax boxes, and a couple rack cases in the years I was putting my set together! LOTS OF FUN!

I just wanted to say that I have been keeping up with this thread for a while now and all your stories have inspired me to join this site and upgrade my current 1978 set to all 9's (with maybe a couple 8's).
This set is very special to me as it was the first year I collected cards (as a 7-year old) and it' has always held a special place in my heart. I remember, my best friend and I both bought a bunch of these cards back in the summer of '78. I think at one point we both needed 5-10 cards to complete our sets and of those, we both needed one Ed Armbrister. There was no Ebay, of course, and zero local card shops, so it was a race to the local Grey Drug Pharmacy or Scott's every time we had a few coins in our pockets. We eventually did get the Armbrister's and finish our sets, but by college I sold my the set to pay for rent and beer money and I've regretted it ever since. Even though it was in awful condition, those were the cards I had collected as a boy and I had put that set together with my own hands. I wish I still had them just for a keepsake, but a few years ago a co-worker that knew I loved cards offered to sell me a bunch of his cards from the late 70's. I think I paid him $100 for a complete set of '78, '79, and a few stars from '76 and '77. The 78's were beautiful.
Anyway, I had always thought of how neat it would be to upgrade certain cards and then this whole grading phenomenon came into play a few years ago. Unlike Dan (softparade), I was already married when I got interested. In fact, my wife and I just had our 4th child so I haven't had any time to really consider this. I don't know what it is of late, as I have popped in and out of this thread for the last three years, but something pushing me to go ahead and get started with this. Maybe it's because it's the 30-year anniversary of the set. Maybe it's because I'm still mad at myself for selling a part of my childhood. Maybe it's because my own son is now seven and he's into cards like I was as a seven-year old in 1978. Regardless, I can't wait to jump into this. The set I bought off the co-worker is beautiful. I would say if they were all graded, they'd mostly be 7's and 8's with a few 9's. I may even send some of them in. That's where advice from you all may come in handy. I'm thinking about scanning a few for advice and once I get the feel for it, I'll know for sure which ones to waste my time with and which ones to look for on ebay. It seems that while not as exciting as submitting on my own, buying them already graded (in bulk) might be the way to go most of the time.
I just bought about 70 (9's) and an Eddie Murray 8 to get started, so once they are delivered, I'll register them. Who knows, maybe I bought these cards off of one of you. Just out of curiosity, is there any way to know how much unopened product there is out there? I would think at some point, it has to run out and we are just left with what's in everyone's hands.
I'll admit, I probably will take a long time to do this, but it will be fun. Anyway, I feel like I know you all already and I just wanted to introduce myself as another person that is obsessed with this awesome set.
After many pleasant transactions with some of you selling off your sets, I am now down to the last 13 cards to complete this monster. (14 if you count the Morales Red Stitch.) I would welcome the opportunity to purchase in PSA 8 or above, the following cards for my 1978 Topps registry set "TGF Collection":

The gap is a jaw dropping ryan that sadly got "evid trim" :-( Very nice raw set I bought mainly for the ryan which looked and measured just fine. Not sure what psa saw...

After reading this entire thread, I have a couple of questions.
Does anyone know which of the retired '78 sets is Brian Igoe's and which is Spikemax's? If I had to guess Spikemax is Supercell and Brian was 1978 Topps. Is that right?
Also, does anyone know how many of the retired '78 sets have been auctioned off and what they eventually went for?
BuckeyeRegLeg - Brian's set was 1978 Topps and Bill's (Spikemax) set was WAW206. Supercell bought his set from one of these two but I forget which one.

Does anyone have any use for a Dave Rader PSA 9 (OC). If someone wants to use it as a set filler, PM me. I would just need the shipping cost for it ($2). It's left over from my box rip and PSA sub. Just trying to help out some '78 Registry members.
I sure hope it's not a dying set. As an Orioles collector, it's the second set I have collected all the Orioles in PSA 9 or better. I am almost finished. Of course I have 2 low pops to go....#517 Andres Mora and #466 Dennis Blair. If you can help me locate either of these cards in any PSA grade, I would appreciate it. I also have a complete set of raw 1978 cards for sale in EX - EX+ mid-grade condition.

There's a Todd up on ebay now. A 6th Lemaster 9(toughest in the set still) showed up in the pop report at the end of the week. Maybe that one is coming to ebay soon.

I just wrenched my shoulder patting myself on the back.

I'm in one of Saddam's palaces this time. It would be nice to stumble across a stash so it could thrown into cards. :-)
I'd post some photos but don't have any software to compress them so they can be posted.
I'll be home on leave in a few weeks and will be in your part of the state for a day.
The deployment really puts a damper on the collection. I'll have to make up for it when I get back. I'm sure my wife will love that.
