<< <i>Nick and Paul, Thanks for the support. Despite the cost, the eBay path is providing a more frequent opportunity to upgrade slots (as Paul pointed out). It also turns out to be a lower cost than sending in submissions. For example, for every 1,000 new cards I look at from box rips, only 50 match the slots I need, and of those, only 1 in 10 are at a quality worthy of sending in. I'm currently getting about 35% of my submissions back in a 10 grade. So, in short, I can get 1 to 2 new slots upgraded for every 1,000 cards opened. At 360 cards per $500 wax pack box, it's about $750 to $1,000 per card to go that route (if you exclude the money I could recover by selling material I don't need). On the other hand, if I could get my hands on an unopened case, I'd have a lot more fun. Any idea where there may be a case laying around? Take care, Hatch >>

The last one in a recent REA auction went for close to 5K with juice...on a related note, has anyone noticed the increase in the prices for single 78 racks on ebay. For the longest time, you could buy them all day long at $35 per and lately they seem to be commanding almost 2x that price..
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
I think there's now 60 registry sets (in the '78 Topps) at over 10% completion, and of those, about 40 sets are under 50% completion. That suggests there's a lot of serious collectors that have made a pretty sizable commitment in time/money, but still have a long ways to go. Maybe that keeps the demand high. Not sure. Hatch

I just pulled out my receipt from that purchase and it was in April 2005. It was for $2,800 bucks. I still have alot of super raw from the case that at the time I thought was not PSA 10 and borderline PSA 9 worthy. I was really really anal in those days. Too anal .....
Anyway, I think I pretty much broke even from the purchase, submissions to PSA, and the sale of some really good stuff on E-bay that at the time were low pop 9's and some great 10's. I am left with many cards in my dormant set and alot of great raw. Those were the days as today it seems I have more children than baseball cards
So I started this thread 4 months after I bought that rack case. What a trip going back and reading the initial pages. I have almost no recall of some of the posts I made and it was only 5 years ago !
I'm going to bump this for purely selfish reasons. I'm still hunting for a #508 Oates in 9 - if/when I land one, I'll be done with my Dodger set (straight 9s, homey). Thanks in advance if you can/will help.
....This Johnnie LeMaster was my hardest card to find in 9 or better for my retired psa registry set.
This week, I put this gem is up auction right on eBay. Bidding opened at $50.
I'm told a solid nine could reach up to $300. So registry people, bid your big arses off!
I ripped this beauty myself! And my eyeballs almost popped out when I first saw it! As I never saw any raw high end examples before. Usually, I saw LeMasters way off-centered!

Such a mess. Anyhow, someday, I'll find the time to organize the extras and delete the cards that have been resubmitted. @BBG, Thanks for the kind words. Also agree with your comment of Ryan being the last PSA 10 to drop. The graders know what it will fetch, and will be very tough on grading. Probably worth cracking and re-subbing a few 9's, but I bet one would get back 8's & 9's instead of 9's with a 10!
$865 is way overpriced for that box. Steve Hart used to sell them for $575 each and they were a lot nicer than that one which has seen some shelf wear.
I have a couple pristine 78 Topps boxes from a sealed case...I'd gladly sell one for that kind of coin!
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
At 432 cards, they have a 5% to 10% chance of pulling any card below a Pop 3. Of those 40 cards, they've got maybe 2 that can grade out at a 10. And, if they can pull a couple of 10's out of that box that grade Pop 1 or Pop 2, they'll make a profit at any price under $1000/box.
....someday, when we can shake this crazy addiction we have, maybe we'll become more reasonable and stop paying $500 per "needed" card. In the meantime, while I'm still a '78 Topps addict, I sure hope they find a couple cards I need
$1100? Wow......good luck to whoever is bidding for that box. I hope you pull some great cards. Don't forget to call me first if you find a couple of Pop 1's ....sorry for posting that shameless and selfish request. (but, don't forget to contact me first...)

@Seminolelaw, That could be me or Hatch looking for a better 10. (Although I have to admit I missed the Herrmann that Steve Kapper recently sold for $90 something.) edit
@Hatch, My last submission I got about 30% back as 10's out of 200 cards, so it really depends on the quality of the box! (Of course none that you or I needed!)
@grote15, I agree as I bought a number of boxes from Steve for around $500. Let us know when you want to sell!
I lost out on the Herrmann as well. It was a pop 3 and went for $90. While other shamless plugs are being presented, let me throw one out. I would love to have a Stennett or Lemaster in PSA 9 if someone has an extra one laying around. John.
