Hatch , congratulation on the Carew and Mulliniks . The drive and push to the top must be amazing.

I'm sorry for the recent BS with the other auctions. The trolls involved , if he had a conscience , gave me more reason to disrespect him/them. Their/his day is coming. Its one thing to want a card more than another , but its another to want you to have to pay more . Even though it will be hard to avoid , expect more of the same krap , until you're finished. Its what trolls do best.

Anyway , very nice pickups.---- Sonny

  • Sonny,
Thanks for the nice words....I sure appreciate it. I've been working my "off eBay" channels to augment the auction activities, which helps give me some discipline to pull back when the prices get excessive. The Carew was a long wait, but worth it. Now, if only I could trip over a perfect Nolan Ryan.... image

  • Hatch,

Please post a scan of the Carew when you have it in hand. I would absolutely love to see it.

  • Help! This set has been the single biggest pain in the a** to complete. Love the cards, but easily the least enjoyable of all the 70s issues, I need help with many of the usual culprits: 28, 34, 112, 165, 178, 188, 245, 256, 282, 299, 302, 320, 330, 338, 347, 354, 397, 402, 408, 419, 442,443, 456, 457, 463, 464, 466, 479, 484, 490, 493, 506, 512, 513, 523, 526, 534, 559, 560, 561, 562, 572, 576, 580, 581, 590, 597, 606, 615, 630, 642, 673, 675, 681, 686, 688, 710, 724, 725

75 Minis - GET IN MY BELLY!
  • I was doing a little clean up a few weeks back and I stumbled upon 4 vending boxes that I didn't even know I had. Looks like I must have bought them around the time I moved in the 90's, boxed them up and never opened that box again. So these cards moved twice with me over the last 15 years. Anyway, there is a 76, 77, and two boxes from 78. I went through both of the 78's (looks like I paid $35 apiece for these, haa!) pretty quickly, in one the boxes the centering was atrocious but the other looked pretty strong all in all. I'm not very familiar with 78's so I'm hoping somebody that is can give me some names to look out for. I saw the post on the Jackson Todd a few weeks back, I'll keep my eyes open for him. Any other cards that are tougher to find that I should be watching for? Thanks
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

  • Sorry, but it's unlikely I'll be able to get a scan posted in the near future. The card has been moved to secured storage.
  • Thanks for the info. I'll try and post some scans next week. I did not see a Murray, the one Ryan I saw was badly OC, there is a nice Molitor however.

I'm new to the 1978 set, but what I'm finding is that Rod Carew and Dave Parker are hard to find in high card. What other HOFers are tough cards to find in high grade?

Maybe it's the scan, but it appears that three of the four corners on back of that Bevacqua card seem touched, particularly the corner on the top right of the scan.

Edit to add: Centering on back is not ideal for a 10, either, imo..

I will say that the front of the card does look pristine..

This maybe isnt the place for raw cards with all of the high dollar sets you all are putting together, BUT.

I am trying to finish off my very nice nm-mt- gem mint raw set. I was thinking of going graded at one time and subbed about 100 cards. Well, I decided against that idea and sold most of them off (mostly 9's and about 20 psa 10s). What I am left with is a nice set with a few holes. So if anyone can help me out with a few nice raw card, I have many 78's to trade and alot of MINT raw.

    The list
    10,11,21,44,45,52,62,65,76,87,121,123,137,141,166,170,181,247,280,306,

    661,670,671,700,707,724

Let me know what you guys have.
I have many different sets raw and graded to trade or I have CASH too.

    Hello fellow 78T collectors,

As of today's POP report, we are down to the last 17 remaining cards without a PSA 10 entry.

    103 Tom Murphy
    221 Chris Speier
    245 Rick Burleson
    320 Fred Lynn
    330 Bob Watson
    333 Jim Todd
    347 Terry Forster
    369 Tim Nordbrook
374 Jose Morales (Red Stitching On Ball - Variety)
    395 Jim Hughes
    400 Nolan Ryan
    493 Steve Renko
    522 Dick Williams
    536 Roric Harrison
    597 Steve Dillard
    642 Denny Doyle
    690 Mickey Rivers

I would be willing to bet that a few of the 5 graded PSA 10 Jose Morales (No Variety) or 4 graded
PSA 10 Jose Morales (Black Stitching On Ball - Variety) are actually the Red Stitch variety.

Nevertheless, now that I have returned from my 5 years abroad in England, I am ready to start
submitting some of the 78T raw I purchased through group rips and from BBCE while I was away.
(Hopefully I can whittle this list down to a few or nil!)

In addition, I have 871 (graded PSA 8-10) 78T dupes that I can now move and ship. If you are in
the market to upgrade or add to your 78T set, send me a PM with your want list, and lets make
a deal. I am starting the process to get them up on the bay, so any work that I can save by
moving them on the CU boards will benefit us both!

    Happy collecting!

  • Hi everyone,

My name is Scottie and I've been picking up 78 Topps in PSA-10 recently. I've spent 2 days going through the thread and decided to join in to say hello.

Background on me: I grew up in the Boston area so my emphasis is Red Sox. 78 was the first year I collected and love the look of the set. It's a memory everytime I look at one.

Proud to have picked up: HOF's Palmer, Carlton and Blyleven. Lyle RB. HR and ERA Ldrs. Any Red Sox. I was the guy that paid too much recently for the Dwight Evans if you lost that auction. Sorry :-)

I have a Yaz in 9 and always looking for a 10. That will be a proud day when it's in my hands.

I'm not a member to submit cards but it sounds like fun to buy/rip packs again. It's the only way I'll get past a certain point I'm sure. I'm at 10% now but it's been easy with all the high pop/low price cards I've got up to this point.

I also know at some point, I may have to start into the 9s to continue filling my set. We'll see.

Anyway, it's been amazing to read this thread, to see people come and go. To see sets fill and break up. I'm glad to be here and look forward to joining in. I'll post scans to keep you up to speed on my set and to keep the thread alive.

    Thank you all for reading!
    - Scottie

    Great cards Scottie!

I started collecting when I was 7 in 1978 when my dad purchased a rack box for me. Still remember us ripping the box. We were after Red Sox, as I too am a huge Sox fan. I remember my first trade back then to this day, dealing all my non Red Sox from that rack box to an older kid on the bus, for all his Red Sox. Took a good tongue lashing from my mom, and she was right, I got ripped off. But that Sox team was special to me, and I really wanted those cards.

Fast forward to today-- I too thought about pursuing a PSA 10 Sox '78 team set, but I felt it would be impossible for me to complete, so alas, I am working on a PSA 9 team set. I too am at about 10% complete, and enjoy searching for what I am missing.

Good luck with your quest, and keep posting your new purchases.
  • Couldn't resist...

    I just picked up:
    105 Reggie Cleveland - 9
    216 Mike Paxton - 9
    270 Carlton Fisk - 9
    295 Bill Lee - 9
    545 Bill Campbell - 9

    And...
    83 Bob Montgomery - 9 (Thanks BubbleBathGirl)!!!
