First of all, congrats to mets on completion of his set. He did it the hard way just like a lot of you others.

Here's a listing of the cards I sent in from the box that Dan (softparade) sold me several months ago. This turned out to be a great box. I have another group of higher pop high grade cards that I did not send in yet. I have sold several of these cards already and hope to sell a few more. If any of these interest anyone PM me. I will try to make a price listing soon. Thanks.

Updated the list of 78T PSA 9's and a few 8's on the Buy Sell Trade page of my recent submission that came back from PSA. As an interesting side note, the flips are the new style but the grading was apparently done before the .5 point system was implemented.

Please check the cards out. This was a nice submission from softparade's (Dan's) box that he sold me several months ago.

Anyone heard from Dan (softparade) lately? Sent him a PM over a week ago with no response as of yet.

    Hey all--

I still need one more card, Joe Coleman, to finish out my 78 A's team set. Though I eventually want to do this set all in 9 or better, I would be interested in this particular card in 7 or better. Anyone? Someone must have a 7 or 8 lying around ready to be taken to the dumps! Please shoot me pm. Thanks!

And everyone moves up 1 (except those in the top spots)image

Yes, I have finally retired all my 78 set in anticipation of selling it off. It was a difficult decision but one I thought I would make. yes even 6? months ago when I first thought about selling it I was pretty sure I would sell it eventually. I have not decided yet how I am going to sell it Obliviously if anyone wants to buy the entire set please let me know, beyond that If anyone wants to make me an offer on some of the cards they need I will listen, all others will probably be going to eBay in the coming weeks. If I am counting correctly the final totals are 12 - 8's, 362 - 9's and 352 - 10's

I very much enjoyed my time here and appreciate all the help I received from the board in putting this set together.

    Thanks,

    George

Thanks Bill, it was a fun 74 days!

There is some info on how it was done so fast there.
  • Trying to assemble a PSA 9/10 set myself. On the 1978 registry as "Seminolelaw" currently #23 and trying to break into the top 20. I have nine 9s that you need, Tom. I also have a 10 of one of your 9s if you're interested in upgrading.

You have fourteen 10s that I could use to upgrade Saturday Night Fever. Do I see a cash/trade possibility here?

Hi Folks.....I completed my first registry set....1980 Topps Orioles (theorioles collection - 2nd current finest). It took me over 2 years, but I'm on to my next set. I'm hoping this set won't take that long, with a little help from my friends.

I am looking to complete a 1978 Orioles team set next and I wondered if any of you guys had these 1978 Orioles in PSA 9 or 10...or any other PSA 10 Orioles from 1978 to upgrade my 9's. Any help would be appreciated....Thanks for looking!

Dan, any chance that you want back in? I can hook you up with the current #5 set:

I am thinking about selling and/or trading my 1978 Topps Baseball Set. The set currently has 89 PSA 10 cards, 633 PSA 9 cards, and only 4 PSA 8 cards. It is the #5 Current Finest Set! I don't have to move this, it is not a "fire" sale, just wondering what is out there.

Each and every card (726) is PSA graded with no qualifers, current VCP pricing puts this set right around $10,000 in value. $9250 plus (10) PSA 10s that have no sales record in almost 2 years of VCP tracking.

The set breakdown is here: Gameusedhoop 1978 Topps Baseball Set

I am willing to at least consider almost any solid offer in trade (any of the 4 major sports) and/or cash, whether it be a single high value PSA card, a group of big $$ PSA cards, a partial PSA set, a complete PSA set, or a combination including $$. Pre 1980 cards are preferred, what I am NOT looking for is modern glossy or auto stuff, or raw/unopened cards. I started this set in a trade/cash deal, so almost anything is possible.

Please PM me if you have any ideas, the worst I can say is no thanks, and who knows what this may lead to.

You can feel confident when dealing with me, I have over 5300 ebay tranactions and feedback of 3000+. I also have had many positive transactions with members of this board.

I need PSA 9s of Rick Burleson & Ron Cey.

What is the pop report for these two, as I never see them on ebay.

    Thanks...
    Enjoy your collection!

Last Burleson on ebay sold on March 16th for $32.55, pop is 21 in PSA 9.

Last Cey on ebay sold on March 10th for $61.00, pop is 19 in PSA 9.

Look like someone is doing an All-Star set in PSA 9!

Guys, For a period of 2 years I was up on the going rate of every damn card in this set. Low Pops, stars, PSA 10's, etc. Now after pumping out babies like the US wants Saudi Arabia to pump out oil I have no clue what the current market for 78's is like. I am sure the market is no better and probably worse then it was when I was putting my set together. My main question is how have the #400 PSA 9 NQ Nolan Ryans been doing .... you know for examples that actually deserve the PSA 9 NQ grade with centering in mind.

Last Ryan was $417.16 on April 21st.
    image

Jackson Todd is still a heavyweight at $360.44 on April 22nd.

Bob Watson and Mickey Rivers are still at $100+ in PSA 9.

LeMaster, Oates and Speier seem to be very elusive in PSA 9.

Jackson Todd was and still is the only less then PSA 9 NQ card in my set. Once tough always tough I suppose. I find it a bit surprising that a few good ones have not been unearthed with all of the 78 case and box rips the past few years.

I've been looking for that card (Jackson Todd) for 5 years. And Rivers. And Lemaster. And Watson. And Burke. Etc. etc. Etc.

Some things never change. Dan: you haven't missed a thing!

I pulled a PSA 9 Jackson Todd from an unopened pack about a year ago for my set, but I caught a break on that one.

Hi Gentlemen...Can you help me with a question about card #299 - Whitey Herzog? In the "As Player" picture, can anyone make out what uniform that he has on? I'd post the card, but you wouldn't be able to tell from a scan..you'll have to look at your own card, close up. It is posted on this link however (if you don't mind waiting for the pictures to load).

It's a Kansas City A's uniform. The "Athletics" is spelled out on the chest with the same style of lettering as it is now, except that their colors then were red, white and dark blue. If you look close, you can see the interlocked "KC" on his hat. Whitey played there from 1958 to 1960.

Guys....How about this auction...Have you ever seen this apparent variation? Wouldn't you refer to this as a printing defect as opposed to a variation?

Totally a PRINTING problem. That is complete nonsense. If that type of thing can actually be deemed as "variations" by the hobby majority then I have multiple "variations" of every card in the 78 set.

I could live with that as a variation. Not too interesting and I don't think it makes it a $5 per card common. It looks like Topps intentionally tried fixing that blue dot, but I'm guessing there are plenty of both.
  • SOMSOM Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭
From my experience with this set, I would say that there is one legitimate variation. It involves card #374. The baseball on which the Topps logo is printed comes in either black stitching or red stitching on Mr. Morales's card.

I have the black version, and I occasionally check ebay for a red version, but not that aggressively.

I'd much rather find a Rennie Stennett 9!

I know...I know: "Who asked you?"

But, I care about the Gang of '78! So, my two cents:

your set is beautiful, gameused...and it is great to see such a classy set up for auction.

But do you think a few more scans might be in order? Your cards are gorgeous! That Ryan is A+...and Murray is tough to find centered so perfectly, etc etc etc. You have an awful lot to show off!

I think I'd want to see more pics if I were to shell out 10K.

Good luck on your sale!! (And please forgive my butting in...)

SOM: thanks for the kind words about the set. My only problem with the # of scans is TIME. It is the summer, I work full time overnights, have an 8 year old son home, a handicapped Mother who relies on me for transportation, and I am still on dial up! Everyone thinks that since I work nights that my days are free, they don't seem to realize that 3-4 hours of sleep are needed each day. Everytime I dig the set out of the closet, I have to get going to pick up someone, drop off someone, etc...

I'll try to get a few more up in the coming days, maybe even that 1 of 1 PSA 10 Stennett! Which I bought from George (gabmets).

Interestingly, I haven't had one request for additional scans yet. Luckily!

Here is the set as it appears on ebay: gameusedhoop 1978 Topps set

That Ryan and Murray are downright STUNNERS! I have to admit, the Murray looks as good as mine image But the Ryan! Centering is just NOT found everyday like that on a PSA 9 NQ # 400!

I don't think I would try and put my set on e-bay in its entirety during this worsening crunch we are going through (housing, gas, food, bla, bla, bla). I know there are still plenty of guys with money to blow but on a late 70's set? I don't know. Believe me, I LOVE these cards as the 78's are my all time fav set. But the reality is that even in good times these cards are mocked by the high falutin in the hobby.

With that said, I REALLY hope you have a couple of guys salivating right now ..... image

EDIT : In this thread post # 1,500 it is really sweet to see that there are only four other threads searchable back to the beginning of April that have more posts then the 78 thread!
