Unbelievable, the Sox have some real bullpen issues. Foulke going on the DL actually helps!! It will give Hansen and DelCarmen a chance to show their stuff. I wouldn't mind seeing a little more out of Riske either. Timlin couldn't have come back any sooner, we missed him!!

I would not trust Riske as far as I can spit. Sure, he had acceptable numbers last year, but everything I've read about him indicates that he is true to his name and folds under pressure even faster than Clemente. Thus far, nothing he has done seems to indicate that what I've read was false. I'd would only let him pitch mop up duty where the game is obviously lost or obviously won.
Those games you really got to win but it was good to see some quality pitching. The box of chocolates quote is absolutly the only way to describe Clement, I still regard him as a decent starter and hope he can turn it around. That was a nasty beat but Timlin is back and hopefully we can build on that.
Well, fortunately, the Yankees are not doing much better, so there is some time to get the house in order!! They made a move for a pretty good lefty already. Don't count on a wild card from the AL east, though, unless the Tigers fold at the end of the year (which is possible, especially if I-Rod is on Grimsley's "list")
Bottom line is we cannot expect anything to be different other than a battle with the evil empire throughout the rest of the summer. The only thing different is the Blue Jays are a serious threat to top the division.

Absolutley, and we all saw this as a possibility. The Blue Jays can certainly win this division outright and force the Yankees and Red Sox into a battle for second place. Should be fun
Clement to DL (15 day) due to sore shoulder. Hopefully we can get him back on track, I think he still could be a solid option in the rotation. The young guns are going to have step up to keep pace with New York, Oh and the freakin Jay's as well........
A nice sweep of the Braves, good pitching all weekend and timely hitting (how about Lowell tonight with another double, this one a pinch hit two run double that breaks the game open). Ortiz hits another one out - looks like his "slump" is over.
Putting up a 6 spot in the eighth inning couldn't have come at a better time. Timlin looks a little rusty, although I'd like to see him get some rest; the bullpen is going to get its work in over the next 100 or so games.
Papelbon really impresses me, the kid really looks confident when called upon. Where would we be without him? 23 saves and he dont look like he will be slowing down anytime soon.
Nice team effort last night, Kyle Snyder pitched a whole lot better than I expected him to, and the bullpen looked sharp (Timlin is back, thank goodness). Also nice to see Gabe Kapler back playing again, I watched him get hurt last year, and it looked awful.

Yes, even Seanez did well -- I think Fancona realized the pitch he gave up the 3-run hr on Sunday was really not a bad pitch at all.
Freddie K. is another story, and thankfully he stayed in the bullpen last night.

Youk's OBP is unbelievable!! And to think the clubhouse clown kept him on the bench last year.
The whole team steps up, and bats around the Nationals pitching staff again - Wakefield is solid as usual. Crisp is slowly coming around, if you notice. He hasn't lit the world on fire since his return from the DL, but he'll be back atop the lineup before long if he keeps playing like he has the last few days.

I think Francona was driven by loyalty. Fortunately, he seems to be shaking his old ways of "loyalty first" and making some sound decisions in the spirit of "winning first." Case in point was his decision to ditch Foulke early in the season in favor of Papelbon. Same thing with putting Youk back at the top of the order...something he wouldn't have reconsidered in 2004 or 2005. Soon I hope he considers dropping Varitek in the order too -- although his loyalty to the team Captain will be tougher for him to shake off.
Good points, Barndog - part of me hated to see Millar go, even though it was obvious that he was nowhere close to being the same hitter last year as he was in 2004. Same with Foulke not being the closer out of the gate, but I am glad Francona (or Theo?) is making the right baseball moves and keeping loyalty to the team in perspective.
I will be interested in seeing what they do in July with the trading deadline. They have a few prospects that can be had for a price, but everyone knows the Sox are going to be buyers and will shop their slop starting pitching. I would not expect Theo to be tempted by someone like Zito (for example) unless an extension could be agreed upon prior to the trade.
Francona is pretty committed to testing his young pitchers this year. He has started to pitch them early in the season (I think) in preparation for a playoff run or actual playoffs. I see it as a different approach compared to last year when the young guys were brought up in preparation for next year. Francona knows that real help is not imminently incoming, so he is making the right choices with what he has on staff.
