Good job on looking out for the newer collectors out there Jami!

I know that early on I wouldn't pay too much attention to the pics and I've learned the hard way. Picking up a couple of 80s stars with qualifiers when I first started on eBay taught me to take a look at the pics and even pop those cert #s in on the PSA site to double check the authenticity of some of those questionable or new sellers.

Things have been quiet on the '72 side for the past few weeks. Folks away for the Holidays? I'm still looking, but not too many that I need out there right now. But, I'll keep my eyes open! image

I decided to stop collecting the 1972 set. Due to it's size and lack of interest from my son we have decided to move in other directions. The lot will be on EBAY soon but offers will be accepted until then. 273 cards. Overall grade a little below 8. Email me if interested at beach64@att.net
    Thanks

I had planned on taking advantage of the .10 cent ebay listing day and put up about 2 dozen dups I had to sell.............I am glad that I didn't ...........................checking the 72 Topps PSA shows a LARGE glut of cards added today.....This is the most BY FAR of 72 PSA cards I have seen at one time on Ebay (over 625 at last count).

The bad news is that a third of them are way over priced and a third are PSA 7 or worse............The last third are 8s and a few 9s with decent starting prices......any newbies out there can probably find some good deals on PSA 8 cards.

The bad news for me is that there is only one card of the 300 plus added today that I need for my set...........( and it happens to be the grand daddy of 72 Topps!!! ).....image

Are you referring to the Aaron IA as the 'Grand Daddy'? If so, you probably noticed one of the 'Uncles' with the Schaal being out there too! image

Yes I had noticed the Schaal....(and had put in an initial bid on it..)........it and three other cards i need for my set end tomorrow.....

...and yes I was referring to the Aaron IA, which seems to be the most expensive card to add to our set....

Early this year in February I let one end at $142, being unaware of how tough and expensive the card would be.

Wow, congrats Jami! $90 for the Schaal is a steal!

You are heading down the home stretch now! image

I picked up the #92 League Leaders card, #137 D.Williams, #239 T.Timmerman, #497 J.Perry BH & #696 R.Carew IA in the last few days. That puts me at about 52 cards remaining if I've calculated correctly. image

Hey mnstortuga....welcome to the boards and to the '72 thread!

I noticed your '56 thread and that's a beautiful set that I, one day, will try and put together. For now, I'm working on the '57, '72, '75 Mini, '84 Donruss and a few others image

I believe that I have the Yankees and Indians team cards already, but I appreciate the offer! Do you have any other '72s?

Mr. Arnee- Thank you and all the board members for a kind intro. I have other graded 72's but only the Carew in 8 or >. Also have some HOF'ers in 5 to 7 grades. I do have a huge amount of NM-NMMT raw in 72 and 75 mini. I was able to purchase a 375 card lot of mini's from a guy on the Beckett board yesterday that look NMMT and centered for the most part. I also bought a sealed pack of mini's last week and cracked it...Most were O/C but the Carlton was nice. Have you purchased any packs to open?

My goal next week is to inventory the 72 and 75's!

I guess I finally made the leap into starting this set by purchasing about 10 PSA 8s from Barnett Cards. I told myself that I wasn't going to start another monster set for a long while after completing my 1971 set; however, this set just kept calling me. LOL. It is my second favorite set from the 70s after the 1971 set. I will be building the set in PSA 8 with a spattering of low priced PSA 9s. For the time being, I will only be bottom-feeding. Once I receive the cards, you will find my set under "Baseball Nut's Set".

    Mike,
I have about 70% of the set listed on my website www.southfloridasportscards.com with scans. I am happy to provide a volume discount for a purchase of 10 cards or more.

    Welcome Mike,

Anything you need to know about the 72 set you can find out here.

There are always plenty of PSA 8s up for sale on EBAY......75% of the commons you should be able to get for $5 or $6 ....if you do not win a card today, there will be another one of the same around later in the week.

If you can get access to recent pop reports, do...so you can get a feel for the tough commons...tough commons can run from $50 - $90

Most of the star cards are readily available, so get a feel for the prices so you do not overpay.

Good luck................and remember (even compared to the 71 set)........ITS A HUGE FRIGGIN' SET!!

Far from the best Ryan PSA 9 I have seen..............matter of fact it is just awful!!

Bad centering front and back plus there apears to be a nick on the top right corner on the back scan top right......

You just shake your head sometimes wondering how some cards end up with 9s and other much stronger cards end up in 8 holders. This Ryan has 8 centering based on a quick look. Maybe some of those folks with the digital rulers can come out and check it out to put us at ease. image

Thanks to everyone for the welcome!

Jami -- The 1971 set was 752 cards plus I have bought several variations and PSA/DNA autographed cards for the set (Garvey RC, Maz, Niekro, etc.). I don't consider the extra 35 cards or so for the 1972 set a big deal after completing the 1971 monster... LOL For the time being, I am going to just set back and watch with regard to the star cards and just pick up commons. I do want to get a better feel for the price.

Arny and David -- I will keep an eye on your stores. As of right now, I have a cash flow problem and am only looking to pick up cards very cheap (around $5 for PSA 8 commons). However, I am sure we will do some business in the future when my cash flow situation improves.

    Regards,
    Mike

I agree on the Ryan... There are several PSA 8s out there right now that look as good as that PSA 9!

Question from this newbie to you'll experts:

What are the known variations for the set? Can you'll please provide a list and let me know which of each variation is tougher to come by. I apologize if this question as already been answered in the thread somewhere.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    There are four Cubs variations:

Pizzarro#18, Bonham #29, Beckert#45 and James #117. The rarer version of each show green under the C and S of Cubs on the front.

Checklist #604 has two different copyrights on back.....one left one right........both are just as common

Checklist #251, and 478 have either Large print on front or small print on front. The large print is so very subtlely different that it is almost indistinguishable from the small print.....,,,pSA has only graded a total of 3 Large print cards total for the 2 cards. ...it is likely they cannot distinguish the difference also.

The large/small print variations are not hard to distinguish if you know what to look for. The large print fills the box around the card numbers. There is space between the small print and the box. If you lay the two next to each other the difference is obvious.

Thanks for your help on the variations. When I do a set, I like trying to do a master set with all of the variations. Are you aware of any variations that PSA does not official recognize? Variation recogniation is a weak point for PSA IMO.

My god.........our thread has not had a post in over a week.........

There has been a HUGH amount of PSA 9s available on ebay................I have bid on EVERY one that I needed........not expecting to win many as most of the bids are small but all I will bid............if I win a handfull of the over 120 bids i have placed bid on i will be happy....if I were to win all of the bids I have placed i will be up the creek not being able to pay for them.

When you guys buy your 9s, and have to sell your 8s, please let me know. I need to upgrade about 88 cards to PSA 8. I like buying in lots rather than a single card here and there, so if I can get 5 or more in one transaction, that would be the greatest.

...as expected I won just a handful ( 6 to be exact) of the almost 120 bids I had placed last night........I over paid on none.....

..A handfull of card ended last night at ridiculous prices. A #367 Ron Perranoski 1 of 22 in PSA 9 went for $100.99. Card # 232 Giants rookie card 1 of 27 in PSA 9 went for $67..................Same guy bought both cards....I think this man needs to do his homework and check pop reports.

The Felipe Alou PSA 9 ( 1 of 4) went for $360 plus . Eric Olander needed this card for his set.........I don't know if he was the winner.....
(edited to say: I did not recognize the ebay handle of the winner)

    Kenny,

Thanks for the list...I will keep you in mind. Currently I have one of the cards you need. (#483)

As, I am sure, you are aware 85-90% of the numbers in your list are either Hall 0f Famers or tough low pop commons. Commons such as # 22, 40, 178, 230, 292, 296, 385, 496, 708, 723, 757 regularly go for between $50 - $90. Between these cards and Hall-of-Famers you need, it will be tough to buy these cards more then one at a time from any particular buyer.....but you never know....

You are right, it is going to get tougher as I need fewer cards. I should probably relax my need to buy in lots from this point forward. Email me at kenny98z11@yahoo.com when you have some cards to sell.

After a conversation with Joe Maggio today a mystery has been solved. Joe says he never sold or put his set up on Ebay for sale.....After I showed him the Ebay listing, Joe contacted the seller: "I just talked to manontherock about this listing. He insists he had a 1972 set and that he was told when he bought it that it was # 10 on the registry. He says he must have linked to the wrong set and that he never looked at the cards."

It turned out that seller did indeed link to the wrong set......I have not concluded which set actually got sold.........

Whoever bought the set got a better set then the one described (100% complete with no PSA 7s)......The actual seller of the set probably got cheated out of a few dollars..........since the buyer and all others who looked at the set thought they were getting a non complete set with a dozen of the tough numbers in PSA 7s.

    Interesting ey????

I emailed the seller of this checklist card to tell him that he had the two varieties confused and that the Larger print was actually the rarer of the two.

Here was his response: "I've been collecting for 35 years, and this one was tougher for me to obtain."

I emailed him back quoteing the PSA pop reports.......only 2 graded Large letter variations compared to 163 graded Small letter variations included 69 PSA 9s. This card has the second most PSA 9s in the whole darn set.

Here was his response : "PSA population reports aren't the only source of determining whether a card is rare or not. In fact it completey skews the picture because it is only a SINGLE view (one company) that only represents a SINGLE form of the populus (a graded card). If you did all your analysis based on a single group, your results would not be considered legit in any sense of the imagination."

    Jami,

While I agree that the PSA Pop reports are not always accurate, especially around variations - his response was pretty much the standrad defense for the uninformed. You can't argue with logic like his...
